But are you one of those fans who's brave enough to change their opinion about a player ? He was in a dreadful team last year and despite the boo boy's he certainly wasnt the worst player. I still think he will go before the transfer window but i also think that will be a shame because i can see him being a very good player. Your only as good as your last game and im judging him on that.
That is my issue with some on here - they can't change their opinions. A player has a bad game fair enough but if they have a good game they try to find whatever negative they can. Happens with Elliot too to a lesser extent. Those who criticised Francis who went last night have the same mentality as you Greenie. You didn't go and are telling us he didn't do so well -well I did but I'll bow to you assessment!.
Last night he put in a very good performance. If he plays like that every week, there would be no complaints from me.
Silly errors my *rse. If he was perfect he wouldn't play in Div 3. OK one game does not a summer make, but give the lad some credit for last night and stop with the witch hunts.
Wasnt there tonight, saw him most home games last season and if he's a footballer than I could play alongside Messi for Barca. Behave you lot !
Then maybe your not entitled to that sarcasm unless you actually watched him tonight. let me tell you , he was immense.
Is that right mate, he has one good game and everyones wetting themselves, yet I've read the reports and people said he still made some silly errors, its those errors that cost you games when you are a defender, he had a whole season of shite games last season, I'm not naive enough to think that one good game a footballer makes, but obviously you are. Why do you think Powell wants to sell him?
Simon Francis isn't transfer listed so don't think Powell wants to sell.
Solly makes errors every week one cost us a win on Saturday but then that doesn't count as he is homegrown right? WRONG Basey got cut to shreds and was a better defender IMO than most left backs we've had since! Only one better is Youga. People always look to slate someone.
Nobody is saying Francis is suddenly sh#t hot. But he has had a whole summer being trained by one of the best defenders in our clubs history and his first game back was solid.
He was like a different player last night, it must be due to the lack of pressure. He's still not good enough for the first time due to some of his decision making and needs to be sold (if anyone will take him), certainly not in the same league as Evina. He put him some great balls and linked up well with Green but if the pressure for playing for the first team in front of a half full stadium in League one gets to him then he has to go.
Admission: I was a big critic of Francis last season! But...
Last season is over, finito! And as pointed out above, Francis was a small part of a badly organised defence, he was part of that problem but who wasn't actually?
If Francis has a good season this year then that's cool - he's a Charlton player and I want them all to play well - move on from last year and get behind them all, new and existing players.
Francis definately has something to offer and with a freshened squad and renewed confidence about the place he may just prove us all wrong - let's wish for that.
Let's not get carried away. He did some good things last night, defended pretty well and found a red shirt more often than not. On the other hand at times their winger went past him like he wasn't there, and most of his crossing - the Euell goal apart - was pretty poor.
Personally I think he wasn't as bad last season as people were painting, and so with the more positive outlook of this season we're more willing to be generous to him. He's perfectly ok for the squad, but he's not in Solly's class as a right back.
Oh and whilst I'm on, let's stop all this nonsense about Solly's height. He's 5'8, the same height as Patrice Evra and taller than Kenny Sansom and Paul Parker were. It's not any kind of issue. SCP was only a couple of inches taller.
He was superb last night, his cross for the 2nd goal was brilliant. If last nights performance doesnt earn him a place in the starting line up on Saturday, i would have him on the bench as the defensive cover, he is good enought in the air to fill in at centre back imo.
I thought Francis had his best game for us last night, last season he played without confidence, probably a hangover from his relegation with Southend, Chris Powell said last night he happy for him to be part of the squad going forward, I hope he can continue this level of performance, at times last season the vitriol aimed his way was hard to take and a touch unfair, at one away game i witnessed him defending a corner in the early stages of the game and he was being abused by one of our own fans, for no reason, he looked very upset by it, I think its time we gave him a chance, he is obviously not first choice, but can be a useful squad player

Solly did not cost us a win, it was the SECOND ball in the area that cost us the win, Solly made a bad clearence, but we did not deal with the cross (not Solly), it hit their strikers hand, Morrison appealed (not Solly) instead of playing the ball, how you can blame Solly for that goal is beyond me. You can trace any goal conceded to any player if you so choose. Solly was good on saturday, he has not had too many stinkers unlike Francis who makes them all the time, IMO Francis is a liability, and we are a weaker team with in in the squad. Of course Powell wants to sell, why do you think we had dealings with Bournemouth? No one wants him thats the trouble. Beds:- Of course I can change opinions, but I dont think so with this one, I hope I'm proved wrong, because he plays for my team. But just beacause Francis has a pair of 'Billys Boots' does not mean he is good enough for my team. Ralph. Silly errors are inexcusable for a pro footballer, I lost count of the amount of time Francis passed 10 yards to the oppo last season. No witch hunt just reality. Muttley, I never said he didnt do well, read my post again and dont spin it. I said I read the reports and the reports said so. nice try. The bottom line is Francis was our worst player in a very bad team last season, he has one good, non pressure game, plays well (arguably) and now he is mustard. We shall see!
Not been his biggest fan but he played very well last night, great assist for Euell's goal, defended well and supported Green going forward, well done Franno.

These so called fans who continue to abuse 'our' players must surely be venting their spleens due to their own inadequacies.
Reason some pick on him is that he gets the basics wrong sometimes. Knock that out of him and we could have a decent right back at this level.
Unfortunately it feels as if a pocket of our own fanbase WANT him to fail to 'prove' a point, lord knows what that point would be, and as a result it's hard to take a lot of debates about his abilities seriously at all.

Thats a bit sly Macronate. I put a reasoned debate and its my inadequacies. Its not abuse, never abused him. I happen to think he is a crap footballer thats not abuse thats my opinion, yet you contradict yourself by saying if he got the basics right he could be a good right back, he's a professional footballer FFS, a fundemental part of being a pro footballer is getting the basics right...I give up! Like I said earlier I hope he turns into one of the best right backs to play for us. He wont, hes not good enough and he never will be In my honest, humble, balanced opinion.
If I saw one, just one, reference to any of Franny's good performances last season (and there were a few, Orient and Posh away springing immediately to mind), or some reflection on the many errors just about every full-back we've had in the last 12 months has made (it really seemed to be the problem position for us, and both Wiggins and Solly have shown hints this campaign that we're far from out of the woods), then I may have been able to let that use of the word 'balanced' slide without nearly choking on my orange juice.
Whilst I would say Simon Francis had his best game for us that I have seen last night, he still got beat a couple of times quite easily by their young left winger last night including a lovely nutmeg, he also gave the ball away a few times, but again he has improved on this since last season when he would surrender possession at least ten times during a game. Don't think we need him to be honest squad has moved on significantly since last season. The fact that we tried to get rid earlier in the summer shows the die is cast, think he'll be moved on January at the latest.
Like most others I was very encouraged by Francis' performance, while not blind to some of his mistakes. I also wonder whether Green provides better defensive support down the right compared with Waggy (not saying 'drop Waggy', simply that Francis probably needs - and got- bailing out occasionally

Wasn't aiming it at you mate, only the fans who abuse players at a game ( should have been clearer in my post).
Everyone has their own opinions about him. Just wouldn't mind seeing him play a run of games in an organised, confident back line.

Last season he was (generally speaking) more often bad than good. This season he has been terrific in 100% of his starting roles. Let bygones be bygones.
Greenie - he played well - arguably - Why add the arguably? You weren't there. I think it says all that needs to be said.
For the last time, I read the reports from other people, some said he did play well some said he made silly/basic errors, thats the 'arguably' part, do you get it now? Nice try again! You should be in politics, you could spin all day long then.
did very well, would rather he plays rb and green than solly and waggy. due to deadball quality and we wouldnt have a targeted right back. also good to see that he's going to fight for the shirt.
What were those silly/basic errors? I saw he made a couple of misplaced passes amongst a couple of delicious crosses, good attacking and excellent defending but everybody does those over 90 minutes so maybe I blinked and missed those. Can anybody else enlighten me as to what these silly basic errors were?
On a serious note- I feel that to satisfy some people who make up their mind and never budge, a player like Francis has to be perfect - hardly any players are perfect over 90 minutes. He made some poor errors last season - I have never denied it but I have always said he is worth perservering with as there is something there and when he has a good game, some on here should just accept it whether they like th efact or not - not claim it was an average game or even a poor one!
Wasn't there but it sounds like if Francis ever makes a bad pass it will be jumped on by certain fans now. Wiggins did this a few times on sat, I'm just hoping the same thing doesn't happen to him. Very pleased to hear the mostly positive reports about SF, can only be a good thing.

Certainly didn't look like a player who wanted to leave and looks up for a fight.
