I just think Francis and Green on the right hand side has a stronger feel to it. With Solly as a more than able option if required - and Waggy as the ultimate supersub before settling, IMO, into a more central role.

I totally agree,i have got nothing against Solly as a squad player but don't think he is good enough as a first choice. Also think that some fans need a scapegoat and Francis fits the bill.He ticks all the boxes.Parky signing, poor in patches last season, as were a lot of other players.Agree with Muttley some people aren't willing to bend at all regarding Francis.
I didn't read this thread and made a similar observation about the Francis / Green combination being more effective than Solly / Green . Solly only works for me if Waggy is playing . Green will expose him.
Both Solly and Waggy did do well yesterday as subs and they are both adaptable players .As has been said everyone will play their part this year.
Franny wasn't shocking every game last season, he just had a poor start to his Charlton career, and therefore there are many fans here and on the terraces who are willing to jump on every misplaced pass, slip and ill-judged tackle.
Take away Waggy's early season goals last year and in all honesty he was pretty poor. Take away Solly's homegrown-ness and in all honesty he's pretty average for a young full back, take away Semedo's tackling and you had an empty space on the pitch where a midfielder should be.
Take away Francis' first 8 games of the season and I don't think he'd get anything like the abuse he does, because he didn't make as many mistakes as Doherty, Dailly or Fortune did in the end
He was mustard on Tuesday, he is good enough for this league and some of your are being asses over the whole situation
And I thought he played better at RB than Wiggins did at LB on sat (not saying Wiggy had a bad game, just a bit off par) but he didn't get ripped to pieces. Granted, Franny has to win over alot of us and I think there's some who would rather watch millwall than cheer him on.
Solly is in the team on merit but we have now seen that he has some stiff competition.
Can anyone who read about it or went last night name one player who did not make a mistake??? Strikers missing the goal, midfilders missing their man in passes, defenders letting someone go past them, I saw all that happen and yet I have still been telling anyone here in work that will listen how we played very well last night.
These so called fans who continue to abuse 'our' players must surely be venting their spleens due to their own inadequacies.
Reason some pick on him is that he gets the basics wrong sometimes. Knock that out of him and we could have a decent right back at this level.
Thats a bit sly Macronate. I put a reasoned debate and its my inadequacies. Its not abuse, never abused him. I happen to think he is a crap footballer thats not abuse thats my opinion, yet you contradict yourself by saying if he got the basics right he could be a good right back, he's a professional footballer FFS, a fundemental part of being a pro footballer is getting the basics right...I give up! Like I said earlier I hope he turns into one of the best right backs to play for us. He wont, hes not good enough and he never will be In my honest, humble, balanced opinion.
Wasn't aiming it at you mate, only the fans who abuse players at a game ( should have been clearer in my post).
Everyone has their own opinions about him. Just wouldn't mind seeing him play a run of games in an organised, confident back line.
Non taken Mac, thoroughly enjoyed the debate if truth be told. Also have enjoyed reading the Post Match thread and Players points as well, and reading both those posts shows how supporters views can differ not just on Francis but a lot of players, hey ho, we won so thats all that ultimately matters in football.

What exactly will Green expose ? That he is a better defender ? Funny had a chat yesterday with someone who knows the family, Solly was at Arsenal as a 11 year old, they let him go bacause they thought him too small, however they continued to monitor him and asked him back a year later, they again let him go because of his size, then at 15 they again asked him back because his continued development, but this time Solly told them to do one and continued at Charlton. It's funny when I watched the youth team against Sunderland in the quarter finals of youth cup 4 players stood out for me Shelvey, Solly for us Waghorn and Henderson for them, all seem to be making a career for themselves.
It seems our fans dont trust Powelly as he seems to rate Solly, something he told me last season. All this being exposed lark is rubbish you dont get exposed by being a good defen der which Solly is. Don't seem to remember the Jolly Green Giant Kenny Samsom being told he was too small and he would be exposed.
People on here are asking Francis to be judged on his performances well fecking well do it with Solly. He didn't find touch on Saturday after making a great interception as their player burst into the box, but there was only one person exposed in the air for that go and it was Wiggins.

I take it you didnt go Walsall away mate because Franny was absolutely shockin, but obviously you saw every other performance because i would multiply that 8 by at least 4 to get his poor performances last season.
Silly/basic errors were made by Bover, Hughes, Green, Waggy, Morrison, Hamer, Euell and probably the other players but Francis' 'silly/basic errors' are the only onee that people take into account. I don't see the point in criticising players because of their past. Last season, our squad was shocking. This season (so far), our squad is good. We (as fans) need to look beyond last season, draw a line underneath it and move on. Why dwell on the past when the future is looking bright?

I think you will find that most comments about Solly are positive - where a mistake is highlighted it is often done to expose those who claim he can do no wrong and pick on every mistake other players make. I don't think there is much to chose between Solly and Francis at the moment and have said as much on numerous occasions - I think Solly deserves to keep his place in the side on his performances thsi season but I do think he mad a poor error on Saturday - this was in the context of a very good game apart from the poor clearance, but if his level slips Francis should get his chance.
I admire Solley because I do think his height is a disadvantage to him and he has to be a better player to compensate and overcome - it isn't fair but it's the card nature has dealt him. If he was 6ft he could be playing in the premiership.
Thought Francis played well and will be useful back up if he stays. He was up against Obika, who is a spuds loan I think. When Francis did get beat he fought back and won back the ball. Just one sloppy aimless pass that I recall. Plus, after that game prefer Evina to Wiggins but Wiggins will need time to settle..
Having been one of his fiercest critics I can say that he was outstanding last night. A couple of lapses but hey everyone is entitled to odd one here and there. Was defensively sound and good going forwards. However let's not get carried away with one game chaps. Let's not forget that he was also out to impress watching scouts and/or managers, the reason may I add why Racon had a good end to the season. With Hughes as Solly cover he does however have no future at the club.
I thought that was a fantastic debut from the right back last night. That Simone Francios looks like he'll give Solly a good bit of competition. Can't believe some of you idiots thought it was Francis out there...........
It is great to hear that Francis looked solid - but Solly is now first choice on merit. I expect it to stay that way.
And Green needs a talking to about having a defensive role to play. We are not a side that could carry an enigmatic genius who doesn't defend, even if he was one. The idea that Solly/Waggy or Francis/Green is our choice is ridiculous, But Waggy does track back and works well with Solly which is not surprising when they came through the same academy.
Comments
Our full-backs have been the biggest source of errors for a long time now, regardless of who occupies the roles.

I still think there is a decent footballer in there and he is not as bad as people say.
However he will never be given a fair go by some fans now so maybe in the interests of both parties it might be better to move on.

Not sure why my last post came out as a quote from Greenie - Sorry Greenie
Edit: mine worked. ;-)

You lot need to get a feckin grip.

Don't think having the name 'Simon' helps. Doesn't inspire confidence or a belief that he can do a job at full back.
Change it to Diego or Franz and he'll win the fans over.

FAIR PLAY TO FRANCIS. WELL PLAYED SON.
Details Ms Sausage please!!!
To all the Francis detractors who weren't there last night - pipe down. All you need to know is he was superb. End of.
