Palace and Europe ?

I've tried to find the answer but can't see anything on uefa website re qualification for next sesaons Europa league.

CP fan here thinks they get in Europa Lge, (If they get to final, of course) even if they don't win it, providing either Man C or Liverpool, qualify for Ch League.

I thought, should that happen, then the Europa Lge place place goes to the next highest in Prem League and not to the CC Cup Runners up.

Anyone throw any light on this ?

Pretty sure it goes to league not league cup runner up
  • They would have to win the cup. If the winners qualify for Champs League or Europa via the league or FA Cup, the place goes to the Premier League (6th place I think?)

That's what happens with the FA Cup (hence Stoke in Europe this season)

Not sure about league cup though

You have to win the League Cup to be in Europe.

You have to win the League Cup - runner up is only FA Cup. Anyway, come on you Bluebirds!

As stated above, you have to win the league cup to get into Europe. If the side that wins it is qualifies through their final league position then the League Cup Europa spot goes to highest finishing club in the Prem outside of the automatic Europa slots. This has always been the case, hence when Wigan lost 4-0 to Man U in the League Cup Final a few years back they did not get to play in the Europa League the following season. The nearest Palace will get to playing in Europe is when they go to Wales tomorrow night.

Conversely, in the FA Cup the runner-up does qualify for Europe if the winner has qualified through the League. I seem to recall that, a few years back, one side (possibly Newcastle) qualified for Europe just by getting to the semi-finals, because the other 3 semi-finalists, Chelsea, Man U and Arsenal had all qualified for the Champions League.

Can't make up my mind whether I'd rather see Palace thrashed 6-0 tomorrow, or lose to a heartbreaking, last minute of extra-time winner. Either way, it'll be nice to see some of their Ultras having a sob on the telly (presuming they've been allowed out on a school night.
  • Thanks all.

I'll be pleased to put him right should they sneak through tomorrow.

MrLargo - Definitely the last minute extra time winner for Cardiff - either the most shockingly bad refereeing decision for a penalty to the Bluebirds, or McCarthorse OG. Would bring back memories of that day at The Valley when they were safe at one point (mainly due to Jacques Cousteau) until Jonny Fortune sent them down - that day would not have been as fulfilling had we hammered them 6-0.

I make you right mate, have fond memories of Steve Claridge's 120th minute winner for Leicester against the Nigels in the Play-off final back in the mid 90's - the look of disbelief and devastation on their spotty little faces still brings a smile to my face!

So my ideal scenario is a last minute of extra time og by McCarthorse, looping the ball over Speroni from the edge of the penalty area. I still like the idea of a 6-0 thrashing though, but I'm happy to wait until Charlton's visit to Selhurst next season to see that. ;-)
  • I hope they get turned over massively.

It's a shame it's not at Ninian Park where the locals could've have intimidated them to tears and slapped the Ultras all around Cardiff.

On the flip side, It might be funny to watch them getting spanked in some russian backwater. ;-)

Can't see them getting anywhere though.

Wouldn't be too bad for them to stay in this competition for a bit longer as it seems to have affected their league standing of late.

Don't think they're going up or down this season, regardless of cup progress, so best they got knocked out now. Really don't want to spend an afternoon watching a load of acne-ridden teenagers waving their foam hands around. Should think the old bill are dreading the prospect of Palace getting to the final - would be a policing nightmare having to provide an escort for the Ultras all the way from Croydon to Wembley.

Would never hear the end of it if they got into Europe....but the players being exhausted every week for league games to see them relegated, that season would do nicely.

Don't know how to feel about our Corydon neighbours having their own multi club issues.

Would be funny to see Brighton in Europe instead

Daft that they didn't see this coming. Marinakis put Forest into a trust to clear any issues for them , Brighton and Villa had similar issues they had to resolve regarding owning other clubs in European competitions.

Then again Textor does seem like a complete idiot.

I'd be devastated for them if they get banned. All their good players will realise they need to leave to get European football and they'll be relegated with the lowest points total in history

I’m sure they’ll get it sorted but watching them sweat is amusing.

Any chance they could be stripped of the cup win too? Nobody likes a cheat.

Is owning multiple clubs common these days or is this a Palace thing having both the majority owner and part owner owning other clubs in Europe.

It's more common nowadays with the big clubs wanting to hoover up all the talent so no one else can get them.

Apparently they still couldn’t be transferred to the Euro conference league as their owner also owns Brondby.

I read it's based on league position of the club apparently so on both counts they wouldn't qualify and would hand the spot to Brighton  :D I'm sure they'll work something out but if they don't, but if they don't I could see Glasner, Eze looking for a club which does

They'll definitely work something out. If Leipzig/Salzburg and Man City/Girona can get around it so they could all play in the CL last season, then i'm sure Palace will find a way.

Textor doesn't even have a controlling share in Palace, but the latest reports are that he is now looking to sell what he does own.

I hear they might get a cheap deal to go to Lyon
