I think you are missing the point.
If a sponsor has paid x million in sponsorship, they dont want some Danish oik getting a non sponsor more publicity for free.
And neither do UEFA, which is why the fine is so huge, otherwise you'll get Rommedah ltattooing 'Andrews Aircon' on his arse, to be revealed each time he fails to make a cross count.
But I suspect everyone, especially the self-righteous Grauniad, already knows this.
The fine for Bendtner can be huge....but surely the fines for racist abuse should be bigger?
Indeed this should be true, though it should be noted that the fines for racist abuse in this tounament arent against an individual, and thereby lies the problem. Also when an individual within the game racially abuses another there is the problem of proof - one person's word against another, usually.

As for anyone sticking advertising on boots, only the manufacutrer would be able to do that - lots more details, albeit a tad out of date, can be perused here

  • It's embarrassing that we follow a sport that only fines €10k to a country for racist chanting and €100k for breech of sponsorship regulations.

    Agreed - shameful

  • But, I should imagine Bendtner was paid a large sum. If the fine wasn't high, he would have made a profit in any case & would not act as a deterrent. He may still be in credit for all we know.
  • The only excuse/reason I can see is the crotian FA can't control what there fans sing at a game, Bendtner new what he was doing as soon as he lifted his shirt, still no excuse for the poor show by UEFA
  • Additionally, punishing countries/clubs for racist chants can be a problem to pitch the punishment correctly.
Don't forget we have allegations against a few of our supporters, albeit not stadium related.
If guilty should our club be punished ?
  • Germany being charged again over their fans

  • I can't see how a country can be vicariosly liable for a fan. Even more so, the suggetsion that is is right to fine repective footballing entities over the racist ranting of a nutter in the crowd more than the shameless self promotion of a greedy footballer who is after all your employee. Its nonsense to suggest that fines be set that high. If you take that money away from the the governing bodies in the less wealthy nations who pays for the game at grass root level? Is it fair and just to punish thye kids.
  • Croatia fined e80,000 after their fans racially abused Balotelli.
  • It looks to me that with all these misconduct charges UEFA have started thier own little cash cow. I wonder how much if these fines go to line the pockets of Platini and the weasels that run our game .

We aren't talking about the actions of "a nutter", we're talking about whole swathes of fans of particular nations indulging in racist chanting. It is indeed down to the individual associations to regulate who they sell tickets to and who they allow to attend the games. England do this through using tools such as revoking passports from trouble makers and restriction orders. If individual associations aren't punished financially then unfortunately many associations wont take the initiative to combat this problem of their own accord.

That for me is more important than someone showing their pants.

  • Good to see Rio from the ghetto getting involved with it, bloody joke
  • It appears Paddypower have now offered to pay Bendtner's fine.

It's ironic - and could have been foreseen by UEFA - that they have got many times more publicity out of the fine than they ever got out of the original incident. I was watching the match and never noticed it, now it's well nigh impossible to be aware of it and who he was advertising.

I think you'll find most national anthems are racist (even our own anthem is considered inflamatory) most football songs or chants have overtones that could be considered a bit racist. Do we ban them all? There would not be a international played if we did not

You can't see the difference ?
  • Racism in any form is wrong. The difference is you can get a bigger slice of the fine if your mob aren't at it.

    What ?

Agree with sentence one, not sure I grasp sentence two.

  • What would the fine be for a racist advert on a pair of pants?
  • The point being those that benefit from the fines are not in a position to change racists chanting. What good does it when yiu are giving fat uefa officials 80 grand so they can do what? What uefa officials would support a fine if it was there fellow countryman being racist. Fines and bans are worthless. Cultuall awareness and evolution are all you need not pin money
  • Oh and the telegraph has just reported England fans were chanting racist abuse before tonight's game in the Ukraine. Kind of makes banning orders and fines seem not to be effective.

But don't we need to have bounds of acceptable behaviour ? Should UEFA stand idly by whilst racist abuse rains down on black players and just say "sorry, we're waiting on the perpetrators gaining some cultural awareness and evolution" ? Fines and bans are really the only tools UEFA has to punish federations whose fans are not capable of behaving in an acceptable way and are preferable to just allowing that sort of behaviour to continue while we wait on evolution (which could be a very long wait).

I also highly doubt "fat UEFA officials" are lining their pockets with these fines (again, I think people get UEFA and FIFA mixed up) - on the contrary as I said the fines imposed for racist chanting should be vastly more than those imposed for showing your underwear, I think the real reason the fines aren't greater is that UEFA would like to downplay the problem.
  • As far as I can see absolutely no real evidence that bans or fines work and are anything more than a backhander for the suits. The fines are completely pointless, unfair and disproportionate. The only people that suffer are the paying federations who simply pay up and do nothing because there's nothing you can do. Look at England fans they coukd be considered just as bad as anything out there. The monkey chants by Croatia fans may be considered on a par with english racist chanting whatever that was! We are not the judges here. The fans are not employees of their country and the fa should not be vicariously responsible for their idiotic behaviour.

To be fair we have made them "vicariously responsible" as you put it over here by having the englandfans club, where you surrender your passport details, get CRB checked, continuously vetted and therefore the idea is that the FA has taken it upon itself to weed out the criminal element.

Perhaps the suits like what they have seen over here and want to cleanse everyone else.

Ok, look it seems you can't be convinced that countries whose fans racially abuse black players should be punished, despite the fact that upon receiving a ticket allocation you agree to guarantee the behaviour of your supporters inside the stadium. One last question though, do you really believe that when fines are imposed they are backhanders for UEFA officials ?
  • And finally....uefa have NOT downplayed the problem but overplayed it. They have scarmongered black and Asian fans from travelling to the touranment without real evidence that they are in danger any more than people of colour travelling anywhere in Europe. They wanted to scare people rather than allow integration at the tournament, uefa are ignorant and shortsighted. what better way to understand a person and his cuture than meet him and have a beer and a chat? People are not going to change if the only black people they see are earning more money than them and have better looking birds.
  • How can you guarantee fans behaviour! What nonsense. What legal mind would advise his officials to guarantee their fans behaviour? The European courts have already decided that some uefa fines are illegal. As a regulation or body of a footballing nation you do the best you can, and if the fans play up, it is a matter for uefa or the courts to determine whatis deemd reasonabke and proportionate.

Finally in the world of fairness you pay a fine to compensate a victim. What compensation will an abused player get from uefa? What deterant is there? Who gets to keep the fines? You can call me a skinny big nose mick if you like. Just as long as I get to keep the fine.
  • Fined £5,000 euros by UEFA, according to the bbc
