Cook reminds me a lot of Mark Taylor, former Aussie captain and opener.

They have slightly different styles but have some similarities, they never dominate an attack in the way that Tresco used to but they just grind away picking off the bad balls and blocking or leaving the good ones.

The art of accumulation I think its called, I used to hate bowling to batsmen who played like that!

I think Cook had a couple of 90s in that "drought" plus a one day century! Him and Trott don't make for the most exciting combination, but with Cook, Bell, Bopara, Prior and even Swann and Broad to bat, we should be able to build on this platform and get a good score in excess of 400, maybe 500, then its a case of seeing who has the better bowlers. If it stays dry, England are going to be hard to beat in this test.

When I said it was his first century in 18 innings, it was more of a surprise even to me which is why I posted it. His record and the records he has broken speak for himself. Only Sachin has got to 20 test centuries quicker and Cook can go on to become one of the best batsman of all time no doubt. y MCS got his knickers in a twist I don't know

Bopara out for a duck. good day for Essex cricket... that's how quickly the pendulum swings, and is why I love test cricket. We now have a game on our hands

still think England will get to 400. Shame about Ravi, almost promises much more than he delivers. I don't think Morgan/Bairstow are the answer either though, I would like to see James Taylor given a game.

Bell now out - 284/6. We've lost 3 wkts in just under an hour and scored less than 20 runs.

That's a poor score from where we were overnight. Need to take 2 or 3 wickets today.

agreed, but I believe we can get them for 300. If we can get 2/3 today then we are still in a good position. Swann to get 3/4 hopefully

I would have said we are about 50 runs short - 435 would have been a good sore on that pitch -= but then S Africa have to bat last and if we can remain competitive or even get a small lead then who knows ??
