i remember going to an away gm at swindon many years ago (when curbs and gritt were both player/manager) ... at that away gm was the most intense goalmouth scramble i have ever seen in my life. at one point, steve gritt put his face on the goalline to stop the ball from crossing and took a straight boot to the face....

When I were a lad players like Peter Shirtliff and Steve Thompson always showed passion and pride in the shirt and I loved them dearly.

    Matt Holland

    Captain Cleanshorts ?

Do me a favour. Nice bloke & all that, but passion ?

He did have a passion for keeping his shorts whiter than white I suppose.

I only ever saw him put in one decent tackle in his whole Charlton career.

Would have to agree with the mention of Brown, Robinson, Rufus, Gritt, Powell etc but I seem to remember Garry Nelson gave his all. Though I did go to a lot of games a bit worse for wear during his era.

Semedo has to be up there, his reaction when he scored against orient was a brilliant moment in a terrible season

    Thommo.

Love Chris Powell and Mark Kinsella from more recent years, but Thommo was the man. He would crawl over broken glass for you.

great shout, garry nelson is definitely on this list... he is one of the nicest blokes outside of football. we spent lots of time together when i was just a kid and he was a regular in the side...

Nelson is a good shout, also big Carlo always gave it everything.

My shout would be for Webbo in 1991/92, gave it the kitchen sink that season.

Oh, and Chris Perry gave his all. Fell well short of the Charlton height test but held his own for a wee fella. You can't be that small and do well in the Prem without passion..

Good call, this was the bloke who Dowie gave a free transfer to.

I was absolutely stunned when that happened. Perry may not have passed the height test but his anticipation was the best I've ever seen from a CB, with the exception of Bobby Moore. Perry continually managed to sneak up on larger forwards and project a leg to defelect the ball away - brilliant. Having said that he wasn't necessarily a passionate CAFC player - just an excellent pro footballer doing his job. Dowie was a knob to let him go.
Glad to hear mention of Bob Curtis - what about Phil Warman?

  • In the current squad I'd have to say Scotty Wagstaff. Off the pitch too he probably does more than most other players with supporter and community events. Top bloke.

Those players summed up what Charlton were about at the time.I would put in Eddie Firmani instead of Ron Saunders who wasn't with us long enough.I had a lot of man love for Eddie Firmani, best player I have seen in a Charlton shirt in fifty one years watching.

Kinsella was Charlton to the bone, so was Rufus, Robinson... loads of players in the 90s/early 00s

    Jorge Costa

Absolutely this. I remember when we played Blackpool in the cup. He got knocked over, but crawled across the pitch on his hands and knees (this doesn't do justice to the speed he moved) to get to the ball first.

Loved Kinsella. His passion was exemplified in that home game against Villa when he scored what we all thought was the winning goal. Such was the exuberance of his celebrations, he ran around kicking down all the advertising hoardings at the Covered End. Graham Poll wasn't having that, though, and added his customary four-minutes of injury time, providing Villa with just enough time to equalize.

Good call. He was on fire in that championship winning season. He still has a lot of affection for Charlton.
