  • With the shooting being held in South London, if there was a drive-by category that would be one more for us ....

Pretty sure the Americans would be favorites.
  • how could murray have possibly beaten federer ?steward's enquiry surely !

Murray has beaten Federer more times than he has lost, 9-8.

Paddy Power suggest the Americans are only 12th favourites

    South Africa
    Colombia
    El Salvador
    Jamaica

are the red hot favourites should the event be accepted.

Rugby 7's beat baseball, roller sports, and squash to be included in Rio.
Kitesurfing, beach soccer (I think?) and Golf are the other new sports for Rio.
  • Really, there is going to be a golf competition in Rio? I do think the Olympics should include more, I think a Cricket 10 over and a Football 5 a side would make it well more exciting. Some will disagree, but I don't think the Football warrants a place. The 3 players over 23 is stupid as its not a junior competition, so why have it? It should be made indoors 5 a side or something, would be much more exciting.
  • Not enough cricket playing countries perhaps?
At least not those with a vote on the IOC.
Agree current format football should be cut, though the 3/4 million+ (a guesstimate?) or so spectators to the football games this year might argue, as would the national football associations!
  • Beth Tweddle is favourite for the asymmetric bars....at 27 it will be her last competition.

yer true but there's only 7/8 countries who participate in rowing/cycling really so cricket could beat that.
  • Think they have started the process of applying for twenty20 in the Olympics but will be a long process!

Really? A quick look at the medal table will show you that 18 - EIGHTEEN - different countries have won medals in the rowing and 15 - FIFTEEN - have won medals in the cycling. And these are only the ones to win medals remember, not total participants.

ah fair enough, surprised, but you could easily get 16 teams to play cricket. There will be sports with fewer countries participating than cricket though. That was my point

I apologise, I wasn't trying to be patronising. Just merely pointing out that your post was factually inaccurate and the real facts took a two second Google search to establish. Not my fault you feel a bit silly.

Really? I can't think of any off hand myself.
  • Women's football?
  • Cricket you would have GB, Ireland, Netherlands, Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri lanka, Bangladesh, India, New Zealand, Australia, USA, Canada, not to mention all the Caribbean islands as well.

Personally I think Cricket, Rugby and Golf would be bad for the Olympics, there should be more sports like netball, squash and karate
  • Squash would be very good.
  • The problem with admitting more sports into the Olympics is that the IOC don't want to expand the total number of medals that theu hand out, so some sports would have to lose a medal competition. If that means getting rid of say rhythmic gymnastics or synchronised swimming then fine, but these things get political and it will be some of the smaller sports that get exposure from being an olympic sport that they wouldn't otherwise receive that will lose out.

  • If Handball and basketball are in the Olympics then cricket definately should be.
  • Basket ball I am undecided tbh

    Cricket
    Football
    Tennis
    Golf

    A big big no no
  • I think sports like Football and Cricket get crowds in but I do agree they do not fit with tradition, neither does tennis or golf. If the IOC don't want to add too many more than fair enough, I do believe the Olympics has to stay with tradition to a certain extent, athletics, swimming etc are the main focus.

Golf is to be included in Rio 2016, as is Rugby7s. Additionally wake boarding is replacing wind surfing.
  • my journalist pal had to study the remaining brits and come up with a medal tally today, he just emailed me his predictions:
athletics - 1 gold, 2 bronze (farah gold, grabartz and greene bronze)
boxing - 1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze (joshua gold, stalker silver, campbell and agogo bronze)
    canoe - 0 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze (didn't mention names)
    bmx - 1 silver (reade)
mountain bike - 1 bronze (no name)
    track cycling - 2 golds, 1 silver, 1 bronze - hoy and either kenny/pendleton, kenny/pendleton, trott
    equestrian - 1 silver, 2 bronzes - dressage/jumping
    gymnastics - 1 bronze - tweddle
    hockey - 1 bronze - mens hockey
sailing - 1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze - not sure, but based on current leaders
swimming open water - 1 silver - keri ann payne
    taekwando - 1 bronze - stevenson
    traithlon - 1 gold, 1 silver - brownlee brothers

obviously he's no psychic, just posted this as an indication as to what medal contending Brits are left. He predicts another six to make 22 golds, but I think we can make it to 25, some of them silvers certainly capable of gold plus could be some fantastic shocks like Rutherford.

Cut the number of swimming events, there's a silly amount of medals available there!
  • Now we're the Olympic champions I'm all for the inclusion of tennis at the next Games !

Although Murray could be standing in front of a different flag, singing a different anthem by then.

Regarding tennis, it was at the first modern Olympics in 1896 and then at every Olympics until 1924. Certainly some tradition.

  • I've got a sneaky feeling Phillips Idowu might come good after all the bad mouthing from Cominesee or whatever his name is....
