For me it has to be Gemma Gibbons.

I'm a Trustee of Greenwich Starting Blocks, the Charity created by Royal Greenwich to identify and financially support talented athletes based in Greenwich. We have been supporting Gemma since we launched the charity and in fact it was only Starting Blocks funding that enabled Gemma to take part in the pre-Olympics selection events in Samoa and South Korea. Watching her win the silver medal was fantastic and a very proud moment for all the Trustees.

Starting Blocks actually had three athletes in the Games, young weightlifter Zoe Smith who broke the British Record and Tosin Oke, representing Nigeria came 7th in the Triple Jump. We also have an athlete taking part in the Paralympic Games; wheelchair rugby's Andy Barrow.

Great stuff re gem and zoe but why on earth are we funding a Nigerian athlete?! Can't believe this hasn't been asked already.
  • That's fantastic s

That's fantastic stuff Suthers. Always great to support talent from the local area and see it being recognised at the highest levels.
Actually Suthers do you know or could you find out if Gemma is an Addick at all? Perhaps if she is we could try to entice her to The Valley??
  • Really hard to pick one. I am going to go for Tom Daly. After all the squit he had to contend with, the death of his father and being in mind his age, in an incredibly exacting discipline. I was so happy for him that he finally got his hands on a medal.

Brilliant work, Steve, so glad to see something positive being done for these kids - this sort of thing can transform lives beyond just sports.

Born is Britain, lives in Britain and used to represent Britain, but was dropped from British team according to wiki. Guessing they have Nigerian family? anyway, local to the charity I guess.
  • I will be speaking to the Club about hopefully arranging an appearance for our Starting Blocks Olympians at a forthcoming home match as I think the Charlton supporters will want to show their appreciation of our athletes' performances.

In answer to the question why Starting Blocks has been supporting Tosin Oke; it's simply because our charity’s remit is to support talented athletes identified on elite programmes who are linked to Royal Greenwich, either by birth, school, university or work. In Tosin's case he was overlooked by Team GB so represented Nigeria and came 7th in the Triple Jump Final. Team GB was not represented in the Triple Jump Final.

Watch out for our Paralympian Andy Barrow who plays wheelchair rugby for Team GB. Wheelchair Rugby is an incredible, action packed, aggressive, but very skillfull game. To see what I mean have a look at this: http://www.london2012.com/wheelchair-rugby

These incredible 2012 Games will help to inspire the next generation of young Greenwich sports stars coming through and I’ll give you one name to look out for, David Bolarinwa from Thamesmead http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9gRyFcREjQ
