For a 15 year old I'm pleased that I've witnessed a few crackers in my time.
    1) 2-2 Vs Palarse 2005 at home, no need for a caption here I don't think ;-).
    2) 1-0 Vs Sheffield United 2012 at home when I was right behind Johnnie for his free kick, it personally proved to me that we were head and shoulders above the rest that season.
    3) 2-0 Vs Huddersfield Town 2011 at home when we ended their "illustrious run".
    4) 2-2 Vs Swindon Town 2000/2010 at home. Went down to 10 men, can't remember who got sent off, then Shelvey produced a moment of brilliance to score from quite a way out, then we went down to 9 after Deon Burton decided to punch the ball even tho he was already on a yellow card…Never the less we went behind in the 2nd half at Charlie Austin and Billy Painter scored in quick succession only for us to then score in the last minute courtesy of Miguel Llera heading in a hoof up top. Made me realise nothing was impossible.
    5) 4-3 Vs Watford NYD 2013, was one of the most enjoyable games of my life.

    1. 98 Playoff final - need I say anymore? So much more than the greatest game of all time. It completed everything out club stood for and was the ultimate way to begin out next chapter and move on from the previous struggles. I've never seen a team work as hard as those guys out there that day. They wanted it.

    2. Palace away. Rommedahl. No better feeling than beating your rivals on the last minute with them having missed a penalty. And SCP in the commentary box afterwards giving us a big cheer.

3.Leeds at home. Was it 6-1? Soul destroying. But sums up how football can be at times. Just had to sit back and admire how good Viduka was that day...for those of us that stayed for the full 90.

    4. Portsmouth '92. My first ever game as a 5 year old. Everyone remembers the game that hooks you in. Never looked back since. Amazing.

    5. Arsenal 4-2 away. We beat the best team in the country on their own patch live on Sky. They should have been 10-0 up by half-time. Somehow we win with Claus Jensen scoring a real beauty.

Close calls are Cov away in the cup in 2000 and knowing we could compete with Prem teams.

Villa away 4-3 false hope or what?

Southend at home in the early 90's. was it 3-2 with Pards getting the winner?

My positive 5,very influenced by my early experiences.

1.Southampton 6-2 1976 although I had been going for a couple of years this was the game that really 'hooked' me.

2.Spurs 4-0 1977 was even better because I attended with a couple of Tottenham fans who told me that we were on for a thrashing.

3.Carlisle X 3.Having seen us promoted three times in the Cumbrian town I am going to cheat and have a three in one.

4.Battle of Stamford Bridge having gone through a couple of years where the move to Selhurst had dampened my enthusiasm the Leeds games and this match brought the passion back.

5.The Sunderland play off. Has to be there doesn't it?

At the top of the negative list would be Dagenham and Redbridge away.

I'd like to add Yeovil 1-1 Charlton 2009 to mine, if this doesn't define what Football is about then I don't what does.
Stood on a terrace with no roof in 90 minutes of rain 1-0 down with ten men, then going ballistic when we nicked a point.

In no particular order, five of the less glamorous games that still shine brightly in the memory:

    1. Millwall 0, Charlton 0 - 27 August 1966. I was 10 years old and we had just moved to Greenwich, equidistant from The Den and The Valley. My old man took me on a reccie to decide whom to support. He was horrified by the simmering violence of the Scumwall fans and steered me in the direction of SE7. The rest is history....

    2. Charlton 3, Norwich 3 - Boxing Day 1967. We were 3-0 down and attacking the Covered End in the second half. Clawed our way back courtesy of Harry Gregory, Gordon Bolland, and an o.g. - and Bolland almost grabbed a winner at the death. Absolutely breath-taking stuff.

    3. Charlton 1, Maidstone United 1 - FA Cup third round, 9 January 1979. Infamous punch-up between Hales and Flanagan: both sent off. All 13,457 of us were stunned, wondering: "Did that really happen?".

    4. Charlton 2, Leeds United 1 (at St Andrew's, Birmingham) - First division play-off final replay, 29 May 1987. Almost consigned to relegation in extra time, then Peter Shirtliff surged forward with those two goals. Ecstasy - better than sex.

    5. Chelsea 1, Charlton 1 - The Battle of Stamford Bridge, 7 May 1988. Last game of the season in the top flight: we needed a draw and Chelsea needed a win to avoid the relegation play-offs. (Chelsea subsequently went down.) The most edgy, fractious, ill-tempered game I have ever witnessed - both on the pitch and on the terraces. Utterly glorious.

See also my memories of the bus and the bar on the day in 1981 when Chester City hammered us 4-0, posted this morning on the thread titled 'The week that was - Cardiff 0 Charlton 3'....

Another crazy game was against Wimbledon at Selhurst in the League Cup, we won 5-4 with the lead changing hands umpteen times.

Second leg was just as mad, 3-3 after extra time.

Also special mentions to Cafc v Brighton reserve game in 1992 1-1 draw, one of the keepers received a pass back and air kicked and the ball went in, but more importently it was my ever game at the valley.

Yeovil away in the rain was a great day. and who can forget the 3-3 v Man utd

    Still love reading this thread.

Nobody has mentioned Charlton 2 Stoke 0. Not a happy day obviously, but the thread was about defining moments. I confess it was my first game that season and it brought home to me the truth in the saying "use it or lose it". I had taken my old friend The Valley for granted and I was not the only one.

The next "home" game vs Sunderland there were only about 3000 Addicks of which I was one. Don't remember the game at all just the empty feeling standing on what I think was a terrace in front of the 'Alf Awake Stand. Huge gaps everywhere. Being consoled by Sunderland fans on the train afterwards and not for the result (don't think we lost).

I was also at the last game at Selhurst and the last one at Upton Park and, thankfully, the big day on Dec 5th 1992. Can't put the feeling into words, but many grown men were in tears that day. in many ways those five games (not my first choices apart from Dec 5th) were defining moments for me.

We won that first game at Parkhurst Cell: 2-1 against Sunderland (Reid, pen; Mark Stuart). Attendance: 5,552.

May '98 Play Off Final v Sunderland - I remember saying to my mates as we left Wembley - "take this all in, it is unlikely to be bettered in our lifetimes." I hold by that.

April 75 - the night we got promotion to Div 2 after beating Preston 3-1. I was just nine and loved the atmosphere of the covered end.

Oct '87 - 1-1 v West Ham at Upton Park. First time I'd been to an away game and still recall the excitement of standing on the terraces with fellow Addicks

Oct '88 - 3-1 win at Carrow Road. Great game, great weekend

Mar 94 - Old Trafford FA Cup 6th round - unbelievable atmosphere

    1) 2-1 win over Leeds at St Andrews in the play off
    2) 1-1 draw at Chelsea when Miller scored after Jukebox Durie's dive outside the box
    3) 4-2 home to Chelsea on Boxing Day
    4) Winning 2-0 at Palace in the FA Cup - Ray Treacy scored a belter
    5) Losing 5-0 at Swindon and getting home in time to see it all again on Match of the Day in the days when Division 2 were hardly ever on television

    Portsmouth home - 1992
    Wembley - 1998

No explanation needed for those two.

Arsenal 5 Charlton 3 - 2000: The day I realised that we were good enough to stay in the Premiership.
Millwall 0 Charlton 2 - 1995: Mortimer in the snow
Charlton 0 Blackburn 0 - 1991: The Yin to the Yang of the above. Freezing cold new years day at Selhurst, hung over and an awful game. Sometimes football's like that...

2)Utd at home 3-3. Season ticket in the jimmy seed for both of these games. What a game

I went this game and found out outside The Valley before kick-off that my Grandad had died that morning. I will never forget the game. It's important for me because we still went to the match. I shows how important football is to my family. My Grandad was a Charlton fan and he would have insisted that we still went. When we scored our 3rd it felt like he'd had a hand in it.

Barnsley away last season, Carlisle last year and Wembley I'll go for as my high points.

Otherwise the Tottenham relegation game and Yeovil. Almost went for that dog turd of a game under Dowie at Wigan.

    In no particular order

    (1) - Arsenal (cant remember the year) when we won 4-2... We were getting battered by them but two goals just before half-time saw us put in a great performance, completely outplayed them in the end... Other than the Sunderland game at Wembley was my first away match.

    (2) - Yeovil (Nov '09) - Me and my mate still discuss this match to this day... Spent the weekend in Yeovil for the match but have never been so wet in my life - Remember McCarthy their goalkeeper taking a goal kick which resulted in a corner for us

    (3) - Sunderland (May '98) - Cant leave this match out, so many emotions - the 98 season was when I started going down the Valley regularly but wasnt the Charlton supporter then that I am today and the occasion didnt mean as much for me as Im sure it did others, am really disappointed about that but there again I probably would have had a heart-attack when we went 1-0 up alone by going crazy based on that.

    (4) - Man Utd (3-3 match) - Got an elbow in the face when Robinson scored as we all jumped up to celebrate... Should have been out of sight long before half-time, Giggs' effort from half-way was just class

    (5) - Carlisle United (2012) - One of the greatest days in my life to see us get promoted that day, couldnt care less about the long journey home.. Just a great day that I'll never forget

Has no one really put the Cardiff game from last season on here, 2 nil down never gave up 2-2 before half time, then 5-2 up then in usual Charlton style make us sweat letting it go 5-4, probably one of the best games i have seen in recent years.

    1) Chartlon v Sunderland 1998, obvious.

    2) Charlton 5 - 1 Peterborough 1994, my first ever game and thought we were world beaters. The Nelson hatrick meant I found my first Charlton hero.

    3) Charlton 2-5 Middlesbrough 1994, Second Charlton game, realised we were not world beaters. The Hendrie hatrick meant I found my first opposition free scorer against Charlton.

    4) Aston Villa 3 - 4 Charlton 1999, this game had everything. Stevie Brown in goal, 2 reds and a last minute winner. All whilst getting soaked.

    5) Charlton 3 - 3 Man Utd 2001, What a game. The Valley was so loud that when Robinson scored it must have been heard throughout London.

Special mention for the Swindon at home on boxing day a few years ago where we drew with 9 men, Llera lob in the last minute. Football is crazy.

    edited August 2013
Love this question. One of the best. Assuming you had to be there....

    1. Play off final - Natch.

    2. Wimbledon - John Robinson's brain implodes thanks to Lee Bowyer pass.

Would like to class two legs as one here - but the second leg was awesome on its own. We didn't know what was going to happen when the final whistle went - nobody understood the away goals rule.

    3. Coventry - FA Cup comeback

Best away game I've been to. That we were the league below was clearly not relevant - we had improved our team since they nabbed John Aloisi from under our noses. Andy Hunt, Sean Newton and John Robinson tore them apart in those five minutes in the first half, we had a midfield that filled the box for fun. The Coventry fans gave us so much stick, when I gave it back I thought I was a dead man. But I didn't care.

    4. Stoke City - Last game at The Valley in '85.

My first game. Taught me that being a Charlton fan was unlike supporting any other club. Which was useful when you have the p**s taken by Liverpool fans at school.

    5. Sheff Wed - Going down in '99...

For the same reasons given for the Spurs game, only difference being that I loved all the players and felt for them on this occasion. The Spurs game, much like the Sheff Utd game, made me too angry.

Feel bad for not mentioning: Keith Jones beating Liverpool, Smashing Southampton 5-0 and the 3-3 draw at Anfield.

Yeovil away another great shout as is Wednesday in 99.

Five from the 80's.....(I'll leave the St Andrews game out because it's in a class of it's own)....

1982/83 Charlton 2 Middlesbrough 3 - Simonsen's debut (and mine too) - all the hype....and 3-0 down by half-time. Bit of a late fight-back but ultimately disappointment. Set the tone really.....

1982/83 Charlton 4 Bolton 1 - Losing 1-0 and staring relegation in the face....great recovery, lead by Hales and Gritt. Kept us up and sent them down. Proper drama.

1983/84 Brighton 7 Charlton 0 - First seven games of the new season unbeaten....and then this. 5 down at half-time and the most comprehensive thrashing I've seen. So bad it was funny....but not at the time.

1986/87 Manchester United 0 Charlton 1 - To just keep a clean sheet was good but to win was un-real.

1986/87 Charlton 1 Walsall 2 (FA Cup) - THE coldest day ever. Nailed on home win. We even went 1-0 up.....

Moral of the story.....take the rough with the smooth.

There's a lot of great games that don't get in the list, e.g. 3-2 v Blackburn (not Blackpool as statckitsteve said, above) (Friedel goes from unbridled joy at scoring to the depths of despair when Claus gets the winner); 3-2 v Coventry (FA Cup comeback from 0-2 down and being totally p!ssed on for 20mins by a quite classy Coventry midfield); 3-0 v Chelsea (Mortimer with a sublime strike, thought we could do things that year, oh, how little I knew); 2-0 v Sheff Wed (FA Cup, that was when I knew Curbishley was really the man for the job); 2-2 at the toolbox (a good performance for most of the match, 2-0 up with minutes to go, we started playing silly buggers in the corners, the Spanners got two back and nearly won it, felt sick in the pub after with my brother and his Millwall mates 'cos for them it felt like a victory).

So, the ones that do get in the list, and I'm going to have seven. Why? Because I'm worth it.

7 0-1 at the toolbox, Alex Rae in the last seconds, that really summed up what going to games v Millwall has been about for most of my life.

5= this is a bit of a toss-up between 5-0 v Southampton (we are top of the league, I said we are top of the league) and 2-0 in the snow at the toolbox (jumping up and down and screaming at the top of my voice when the second went in, ditto when Rhino got sent off, was all very well, but I was in the press box amidst a lot of Spanners at the time; the double back at The Valley in March gave me bragging rights over my Millwall-supporting brother for the first time ever).

    4 4-1 v Bolton W to stay up.

3 3-1 v Preston NE, I was working the turnstiles that night, the queues were enormous, so missed about 20m of the game; on the plus side, it was 95p to get in and they didn't give us a float, so that made an awful lot of 'keep the change' when given £1, those 5ps added up to about £4 and helped to fund my adolescent drinking.

    2 Sunderland, Wembley, nearly feinted when Ilic made that save, which was very unfortunate as I had my four-year old son in my arms at the time;

1 Portsmouth, Back to The Valley, grown men in tears (me included), how this cannot be number 1 for anyone who was there, I do not know.

And finally, this isn't a game but this is what being a Charlton supporter is all about:

0 The election count at the town hall, Queen Vic with a Charlton scarf, Simon Olman (spelling?) getting escorted off by the filth, 'Back to The Valley' echoing round the rafters. I felt 10ft tall walking home that night and, even though I got only 100-odd votes in my ward, proud to have been part of it.

AddictsAddick..................my town hall memory was as a real Charlton supporter; standing outside in the the pouring rain. Truly great day though. I just hope the current muppet owners don't take The Valley away from us!
