Thought last night was an improvement on most of the series, at least once they stopped showing boring Sasha and concentrated on the battle. The tiger was cool, and Ezekiel is a massively better leader than Rick.

Still do many daft things in it though:

    - Literally no reason for Negan to put Sasha in a coffin beyond it helping the (predictable) 'she's a zombie' plotline.

    - Why can't the garbage gang lot talk normally?! Why would a whole community agree to only ever speak like a 2 year old? And why would Rick put all his trust in a group he's just met after everything that has happened?

    - Negan deciding to recruit everyone who tries to kill him, and never just killing Rick.

    - Why cut the trees down? All it did was allow Negan to be 100% sure he was about to be attacked.

Yeah, why not park round the corner and put her in then?
Or not put her in a coffin at all?

It felt like a ridiculous plot device to get her to the Sasha zombie attack.

Negan said to her in the episode she didn't have to go in there she could jump in as they got closer, she then said she could do with the sleep and therefore pretty much volunteered to go in. I was disappointing however that Negan didn't cave in Eugene's head. He knew he was lying, but then I guess he is valuable as a bullet maker.

    - Sasha insisted on going in the coffin. Neagan knew it was good theatrically so didn't argue.
    - Ezekiel admitted he's a fraud in that he's an actor playing the part of a leader. He's a figure head with very little tactical nous. He is not a better leader than Rick.
    - The Sasha bits being boring and the tiger eating people being cool is exactly why this show has problems.
Rick's 'tactical nous' has, in just the recent past:

    - Got them to agree to kill off the Saviours for the Hilltop, despite not knowing a single thing about their size or capabilities, ending up with the Saviours realising Alexandria was there and killing Glenn and Abraham in revenge.
    - Allied them with a group they know nothing about (if they can even shoot guns, for a start, let alone whether they can trust them), which could have easily got Carl killed last night.

He's been an appaling leader pretty often in order to lead the plot in the desired direction.

Ezekiel made the best of a bad situation once the Saviours attacked them, did the drop-offs on his terms and bided his time for the right time to fight back. He can also control a tiger and get through to Morgan and Carol, which not many others have done recently.
Rick's decisions have gotten worse as time goes on but we have to remember that this is a guy that didn't originally choose to be leader but is definitely now addicted to it. This was apparent when he entered Alexandria and continually challenged Deanna's authority.

Rick and Ezekiel would make an efficient pairing, which would relieve Rick of his burden a bit and also help Rick learn how to keep things good, to build a successful community without having to dig out new opponents. We therefore know this won't happen.

Yeah I did get this but who in their right mind gets into a sealed coffin (apart from Howling Mad Murdoch). It was clearly far fetched so that they could have the reveal which, I suspect, all those watching had guessed was coming by the end of the scene you mention.
  • Really really poor season. That finale was not worth all the previous episodes of dross. Maybe if there was 2 episodes a week it would be a bit better as it would seem like it's moving a little quicker.

Disappointed with this season and the previous one to be honest. It isn't anywhere near as good as the prison/governor series
  • Episode bloat is the best way to describe it. Could have cut it down to 10 and not taken out anything of any value.

I've stuck with show for 7 seasons so will probably continue to do so but it's really lost it's way. The new stigs from the dump are just plain stupid/annoying and Negan is a copy and paste for every episode (smarm/menace/fecking Lucille) who I want to see dead just because he is a complete prick.
  • The trash people pissed me off so much. They must be the worst written characters I've seen in a show recently. None of this would have really mattered if they had just been added in as bullet sponges for Rick's war, but if you're going to give them a pivotal role in turning on Rick then you have to do a lot better than a bunch of dip-died mental defective road warriors complete with shitty zombie Thunderdome. Why the hell can't they speak properly? You could just about have it with one of them, say they lost their mind in the apocalypse but a whole community of people who have lost their ability to use bridge words? If you read all their lines in a phony Russian accent it would work as some kind of horribly written stereotype and it would still be better TV than the filthy garbage people. Not only their stupid design, but the lack of characterisation of them was criminal. We had 16 episodes, two of which were action-filled and 14 of which were either filler or developmental episodes, and yet there wasn't one episode where that relationship was developed. Wouldn't it have been so much more impactful if you actually cared about the lanky bin leader turning on Rick? Wouldn't that scene with Michonne have been way more affecting if she had formed a friendship with that woman on the roof instead of having just met her? Wouldn't the Alexandrians and trash people shooting each other while the Saviours watched and laughed have hit you harder if the trash people had names? Yet instead we got what felt like 700 hours of Carol cutting up butternut squash and Morgan talking about how killing people makes him sad before they both turned back into the characters they were a season and a half ago. I know more about Negan's bloody wives than I do about the garbage pail kids, that's just bad writing.
  • Sorry. Sorry, I thought this was the Karl Robinson thread.....
  • A few people said earlier that this is best watched in a 'binge' which is how I have watched each series and did again this week with Series 7.

The first half did not really work for me (apart from the first episode which was brutal) probably because the group had knuckled down too far and it wasn't exciting, but as the 2nd half got going it begun to fit.

I enjoyed it overall but agree with @Greenie Junior that the 'Governor' series was far more powerful, probably because of the character.

It's going to be interesting to see how they take this forward.

  • There are tonnes of filler episodes!! All the so - called character studies are dull as ditchwater imo. The writers shouldn't have been greedy and ended it around season 5.
    I'm not watching 8.
Series 6 and 7 were absolutely hopeless.

  • Hoping for an improved Series 8!
  • Really hope the storyline moves on a bit - the last couple of seasons in general have been really samey.
  • Does it start next week?
  • I can't believe this is still running. Are they still following the "recover from the community gone wrong, split up, join new community, get overwhelmed by sick survivalists, overcome sick survivalists. kill a few zombies and people, and repeat" plotline?

    That was awful.

Why not just shoot Negan while he is pissing about on the balcony bit?
Why waste hundreds of bullets on windows?
How comes the walkers could keep up with Daryl's bike?
Why stand and watch Gregory steal your car?
How would a thin bit of metal on your car stop bullets? Risky standing near the petrol tanks.

Why, for the love of God, did no one tell the writer that the 'shittin' pants' line was the worst bit of dialogue ever written.

It's so bad now. Such a shame.
  • I feel like an abused spouse who's given my partner one last chance. What was I thinking?
  • The biggest problem with this show compared to GoT etc is the way in which it sets up scenes of supposed tension, yet the characters have such thick plot armour you just know nothing will happen.

    Really a poor episode.

Espically as Negan has a bat and the Preacher has a machine gun.

Glad to hear the show is still going round in the same circles and with ever more contrived plots as it was 4 seasons ago when I gave up on it. Shame because season 1 was great but it was on a downward trajectory from then on.

  • My main question after last night is, when did the Walking Dead turn into the A-Team?
  • Me and the wife were thinking exactly the same. In fact my wife yelled out "Oh for f*ck sake, somebody just shoot him". They let him walk about before shooting out all the windows and we didn't understand the purpose of it all.

I have followed The Walking Dead from the start and after the poor season last year, I had high hopes. But it seems to be same old, same old.
  • Same as the graphic novel/comic series.

It was surprisingly boring as 1st episodes back go.

    Ah well
  • I'm a defender of the programme and understand every episode can't be a bloodbath but I was pretty underwhelmed with that one last night. They have got some brilliant source material to work from and I don't know if they were trying to be too clever or what but whilst the blowing up of stuff was fun the rest was pretty daft. I'm a fan, love the show and was ready for the first episode to silence some overly harsh critics, that didn't. Now I'm worried people will abandon it and we won't get a proper ending

What a load of old pony. The show has blown way off course.

For a landmark 100th episode it was crap. It feels rudderless and without any real direction at the moment. Close to giving up TBH.
  • I'll preface this by saying I was bored for most of the episode, mostly because of the plot armour, but I also think there was a very clear and distinct approach to this opening - they don't want to repeat last season's Negan jeopardy, rather, they are showing the group getting on top. I think they must know another season of Negan's bullying would frustrate audiences.

As such, I don't think it's rudderless, they're just trying to take it somewhere, and even though we don't quite know where yet, we are getting bored of finding out.

As ever, this comes down to the insistence on it being a never-ending soap opera. Every single one of the best shows ever made had a finishing point to aim towards. If TWD had done that 5 years ago, we might be building toward something meaningful, or even scary by now.

Also, some of the CGI looked awful. I've seen better explosions on r/michaelbaygifs
  • I parted company with Walking Dead after the pornographically violent execution of Glenn and Abraham last series. My tele box has recorded it and I might give it another go, but from what everybody here is saying, I might not.

The show is just getting made because it's AMC's biggest earner, the creative spark has gone, there are no new ideas. A good story has a beginning, a middle and an end. TV network profits dictate that the Walking Dead is all middle for ever (at least until it's cancelled).

The sad thing is it would be so simple to make it good again. It should be a dangerous world and so easy to make tension if they were willing to kill big characters suddenly and without a few episodes of telegraphed 'death arc' storylines. Imagine if Glenn had just been killed after falling from the wheelie bin - shocking, sad, and realistic someone just dying from an accident in the post-apocalypse

Or if Rick and can had just shot Negan last night - would have been a shocking but satisfying moment, and yet been decent plotwise as Simon could have stepped up to re-rally the Saviours - and Steven Ogg is brilliant as Simon.

Have the main characters burn the garbage dump to the ground - again, would have made a great scene and got rid of unnecessary terrible characters when there are too many.

That's just two ideas off the top of my head that would be so much better that wasting bullets not shooting at Negan but taking out a few old windows.

They really, really need to do a few things people can't see coming a mile off. The Wolves' attack was the last time I remember that happening and that was brilliant.
  • Yeah, I've got a good 12-minute window to top Negan but let's just piss away all our ammunition firing at windows instead. Then take a Polaroid. That'll show that beastly Negan.
