As a striker, especially a loan striker, coming to Charlton, if you haven't scored on your debut you will soon get stick. To be fair we have had a long run of average strikers to put up with and so we demand a messiah. Unless we are very lucky, Marvin will be needed to play a part this season and I think a bit of encouragement would help.
I agree that it will help to encourage him and also agree that we have had a long run of average strikers but I have to disagree with the statement that we give stick to any on-loan striker who doesn't score on their debut. I reckon most fans will back a player who shows that he is trying & will run after lost causes etc etc, What is unacceptable is a player who looks like he can't be bothered & doesn't really care - and this is the problem with a lot of loan signings. Their hearts aren't with the club & are probably p**sed off that they are away from home & familiar surroundings. As you said, we have had to put up with a load of ponies & donkeys since relegation from the Prem, both registered and loanees, some have gone onto other clubs and done it (Varney maybe and Mooney at a lower level) but most have sunk without trace. We have not had a decent striker IN THIS DIVISION since Mendonca & Hunt, and they were that good that they got us promoted (Mendonca in 97/98 and Hunt in 99/00) and we have not had a consistent striker since Killer.
This was why I was moaning all during the summer - we didn't bring any decent strikers in & if you leave your transfer dealings to 2 days before the start of the season you are only going to be bringing in dross as all the decent strikers would have been snapped up. Until we invest in 1 or 2 proven goalscorers in this league - players who can get 20 goals a season - then we are going to continue to struggle.
I've only watched us twice this season, both times at Huddersfield and both times Sordell has started. The jury is still out for me. In the Carling cup game he was anonymous for 60 minutes until their CB clattered into him and he went on a crusade to take retribution. After that the Huddersfield fans got on his back and it really fired him up. He scored one and suddenly looked a very dangerous player.
Last night he didn't look too interested. He had some joy dropping deep but a lot of balls were played up to him in the air. Their CB was at least a foot taller than him. Saying that he doesn't endear himself to the fans by closing players and putting a shift in. I'm also not convinced he's much of a team player, there was certainly no understanding with Church.
There is certainly a player in there. Come on Chrissy, I know you can find it!
This Saturday will prove his mettle (providing he gets a run out). If he puts in a poor shift against Millwall, then he might as well f*** off.
I Agree.
I actually think he will be a better option than a half fit Yann. Shittu and Beevers strength is their strength, a bit of pace and movement is their weakness. If Sordell is up for it, he could have a very big game.
Paul Robinson who replaced him is 31 and has been out of football for a year and last night was his first full league game last night I agree that we could use pace against him towards the end of the match if need be. Alan Dunne also is not getting any younger. Harriott and Stewart as impact players could be explosive in the last 20 minutes.
No. he doesn't score enough goals - and thats mainly because he doesn't shoot enough and is currently being used to sit a bit deeper and put balls through to A N other. Don't get me wrong - he is a great player, but is not a great striker.

I thought this until i saw shittu against Haynes. Danny Haynes didn't get a sniff and is lightning and imo hard working. Sordell hasn't shown he is either.
Give the bloke a chance - its difficult to fit in at any side particularly when the rest of the side has to adapt the way they normally play to the forwards because he isn't Yann.

Agree we should give him a chance. But he has to show willing i.e. Church.

Effort is demanded.
There were times when similar comments were made about BWP - from the little I've seen of Sordell at home games he looks to get pretty animated (and has quick feet) when the ball gets near to him in the box. I know we like to see strikers make 30 yard rushes chasing loose balls, which they know they will not make (because they are rather more experienced in these matters than we are) but it really isn't what they are paid for.

i do see what you are saying about natural finishers. however;
Bent? Jonathan Johannson? Paul Williams? David Whyte Whyte Whyte?
id put money on at 1/2 for them to score one on ones and clear cut chances from 18 yards or less.

Alas, MS didn't show much pace OR movement last night.
As I've posted before, I don't like to dismiss a player out of hand, but he was extremely poor IMHO. His workrate was poor and was dispossessed on several occasions when he should have had the ball under control.
Church may not be the answer but fans will always favour a player of his ilk who puts himself about and doesn't give up.
Really hope MS doesn't need to be involved on Saturday....for his sake as well as ours.

totally agree with this assessment from Fanny .. he's lacking confidence, fitness and I dare say interest

Blimey, if Fanny thinks he is bad we are fooked :-)

I hope he works out but I will not hold my breath, I have filed Sordell under Hulse & N'Guessen.
That's a strange one. Both of them did well and scored important goals for us. If Sordell's contribution matches theirs I won't be too unhappy with him
It's way to early to judge whether or not he's going to be a good loan for us or not. I seem to remember at the start of last season people were saying Kermorgant wasn't good enough at this level but he's proved them wrong. Given a run of games he'll gain confidence and could still turn out to be very good for us.

Agreed. It's simplistic to say that quick player will get one over on a lumbering defender. Shittu showed how physically dominating a player like Haynes, could break his will.
I've only seen him once (v Boro). Spent the first five minutes thinking "wow, what a player. how did we manage to get this guy?" and the next 85 answering my own question. As others have said, unfair to judge on scraps, but he's with us for a reason and I'm not hopeful!
Church is the better option for Saturday, gets stuck in isn't afraid to rile the opposition. Him, Yann Jackson, Pritchard and Stephens performed well against a good Watford team and beat the much fancied Leicester, take yann out put sordell in and suddenly we were dross.
One player does not a team make, but one player can undo a lot of the teamwork
I certainly wouldnt give any of our players abuse, but found watching Sordell at Huddersfield very frustrating.
Though we do have to remember that when BWP appeared lackadaisical he was scoring goals, and when in response to people moaning about his effort, he started running for everything and tracking back his goalscoring stopped.
He was making a few runs at Hudders that simply were not read by his teammates maybe a bit more play time will make a difference, its a gamble though.
Jeff Stelling said that if reports were to go by then Dougie Freedman might not have long left as Bolton manager.
If that happens the new man might see Sordell as part of his plans or might see he's not really in our own plans (can he be recalled early? i.e. I thought the deal was only allowed to go ahead if the clause was included).
Just thinking if that were to happen we'd be really screwed over in the Striker dept. with on Yann / Church and Pigott (based on Bolton's performances at the moment I'd recall him anyway if I was Freedman to try and sabotage our season)
