Everyone has their opinion but i hate it when people who have never played higher than sunday league think that a player needs to run everywhere. The best players pick and choose the best runs to make, and if the players arnt smart enough to play the ball or the tactics arnt good enough, well thats not sordells fault
I don't expect every player to run non stop like say Pritchard, Church or Wagstaff, but I do think Sordell could play with more energy.
He's had some decent moments and I don't think we've seen him at his best, but I'm not seeing a great player being let down by tactics and teammates. A top player would still stand out in a struggling team.
As far as I can tell he just needs a little love and support. He went up to Bolton and was homesick. He then knuckled down and was settling in and then they farmed him out on loan. He hasn't really felt needed or wanted since Watford.
I would like to see Sordell given a run and I wish everyone would get off his back. A couple of times he has come on he has played out wide too.
I think if we played it along the floor more instead of hoofing it up to Yann's head he would do better. He has a good touch and is strong. Reasonably quick too. Let's get behind him Becuase until further notice he is one of ours, albeit temporarily.
He doesn't refuse to run, that's complete bollocks. He makes runs and we elect to punt it to Yann instead, who flicks it on to absolutely no-one because sordell has already made his run beforehand. All we ever do is punt it up to Yann, and I think we played better football without him. Sordell needs a run in the team, but he's not getting it so we may as well seems him back.
Bent never ran around like a headless chicken a la Church did he? Neither did BWP and they have been our best goalscorers in the past decade
No-one wants him to run around like a headless chicken. I wouldn't say Church does either. If we're struggling to get hold the ball up the pitch the strikers have to run the channels to provide options. It's what happens in weaker teams due to a lack of quality. And yes, BWP did it in the Championship when the service wasn't coming in like it was in L1. Church has also already scored more goals than BWP did all last season. Sordell doesn't make any unselfish runs in an attempt to work the ball up the pitch, and that's what frustrates people.

He could try running when being substituted when we are drawing 0-0 at home. That typified his attitude for me that day, I'd happily send him back to Bolton now. Piggy is no-where near good enough yet, but at least he puts in the effort.

Agreed, and some one of his alleged ability, should be able to adapt his game. I say alleged, because I have seen little of this on the performances I have seen. But then I have only managed at much lower levels,( saturday league) so my views do not count for FA!
Surely it's worth giving sordell a chance ? He's a young international?
My brother made a good point a player like Sordell needs a run of games and he will score but we cant afford to carry him for 3/4 games untill he finds his form.
I thin the fact Powell brought Pigott on ahead of Sordell tells you he is not impressed.
We can "afford" to carry church though...
I don't know the exact stats but I think he's got three league goals in about 15 games. Not exactly earth shattering stuff.
Marvin's got one I think.
Would be interesting to see how many minutes both have had on the field because I doubt church's goal ratio will be any better than sordell's.
Yes church runs aroun a hell of a lot more and if that 'effort' is what you judge a footballer on then of course church is 'better'
I would prefer to see yann and sordell up top, he just can't have made it into the Olympics/u21 setup as a striker without the ability to finish.
I'm willing to give Sordell a chance to impress and the fact is he must be a good player as he has a great record for Watford and his Under 21 & GB Caps further back this up.
However his biggest problem I feel is going to be the fact that I believe that he has already lost the fans. Unfortunately he'll probably need them to get his confidence back but the fans will need to see him produce the goods in order to back him so it's probably become a bit of a vicious circle.
He needs a run of games and fans too easily write off players these days on the back of half a dozen performances, I hope he does well for us because I know that myself and many other Charlton fans were very excited when we got him on loan in August, I hope the lad can turn it around.

He needs to be given time on the pitch and that is more than 5 minutes at a go. That said, CP can't afford to play a player that he believes won't do it. So for Sordell it is a dilemma, he has 5 minutes to prove himself, which does not give him time to get into the game, Powell does not use him either for more time or to start. If a striker gets injured Powell selects Piggy or goes with one up.
If he wants to come good then he needs to persuade CP that he can do it and at least be given longer time on the pitch. he can only do that in training and by talking to CP, but maybe that relationship has broken down now.
It does worry me that we have a litany of loans from high profile clubs throughout CP's reign that have not done it, surely this raises questions about either the managements motivational powers and or their recruitment strategy.
I'm more worried about Stewart who has had one decent game in nine (against poor oppo) and yet still gets picked and fails to perform. I've seen decent touches from Sordell and would like to see a longer stint.
Probably because you can replace Sordell with the hard-working and higher scoring Church. Who do you replace Stewart with? Pritch is a central midfielder and Danny Green persists in being Danny Green. Stewart is similar to Green in that he can have a game-changing moment, but Stewart's seem to come once every several games rather than once a season like Green's
Having taken the same route as Marvin Sordell, and found writing and performing as a way to find balance in my life, the retirement of a footballer at 28 through mental health issues rather than physical injuries shows the football bubble still has some way to being popped.
Seeing the video of Denis Prose, (anagram of depression) is a spoken visual poem of how the dark side of our personalities can entice and entrap our light side to commit the ultimate escape from life. This video was Marvin's cry for help not only for himself but others too.
Having been a salesman when your only as good as your last month's figures, what it must be like to be judged on your last 45 minutes doesn't bear thinking about. Plus throw in racial abuse and verbal abuse of your abilities and you have the recipe for an implosion.
Reading that Marvin took an overdose of tablets in 2013 when he was on loan at Cafc makes you realize the desperate thoughts he had when he was struggling to make the starting line up and when he felt outside the dressing room banter.
I hope he feels relaxed and his mental health balance restored now that he has retired from the realities of Professional football.
Watched "Football, Prince William and Mental Health" which featured Sordell. Very sad to think that he attempted to take his life during his time with us. Hope he continues to find peace and happiness now.

Will have to watch that, he did as well as anyone else in his time with us.

More proof that wealth doesn't make you happy.
That Sheffield Weds hat trick was huge for our season. To think he did that with the demons inside his head is bloody impressive. Looking back, it often seemed to me that he had the talent but the connection between his mind and body in terms of applying it was lacking. It all makes sense now. Good to see he is happier in himself now.

Stats on FIFA or Football Manager don't count!

Essential with a flaky midfield and a lack of goals in the side whoever plays.
Church does Sordell doesn't and, in a side lacking goals, that is why he gets picked.
I still think Sordell has something to offer even at this stage, you don't become a bad player overnight, but I can see why Powell doesn't start him.
