  • Just an observation from Soccer Saturday today...

Jeff Stelling said that if reports were to go by then Dougie Freedman might not have long left as Bolton manager.

If that happens the new man might see Sordell as part of his plans or might see he's not really in our own plans (can he be recalled early? i.e. I thought the deal was only allowed to go ahead if the clause was included).

Just thinking if that were to happen we'd be really screwed over in the Striker dept. with on Yann / Church and Pigott (based on Bolton's performances at the moment I'd recall him anyway if I was Freedman to try and sabotage our season)

How can we be skrewed. The bloke is not playing and when he is on the pitch he still isn't playing.

Okay then... What do we do if Church / Kermit and Pigott all get injured or suspended?
  • I thought he was a lot more committed today than when I'd seen him before; I think he should have come on earlier. Whether he can do that in the next game is a big question, though
  • Bar Pritchard's pass in the first half, his through ball to Church was the pass of the game. Looked more lively today
  • Millwall were attempting to wind him up with surreal fish chant. It would have been a good game to see what he is made of as that may have helped to motivate him and get him going. It would have been better to start him in a 442 (easy to say with hindsight).

I need to see that he wants to be part of the club or not. If not then best that he goes back to Bolton. There was a good through ball to the minor support striker Church. It looks like he may have talent. That's not enough yet, will give him a chance but time is running low.
  • Shame we didnt get Jessie Lingard on loan from Man Utd instead!! - Four goals on his debut for Birmingham today (3 in 15mins)
  • Noticed he didn't clap the fans and went straight down the tunnel.
  • Done alright when he came on, actually showed for the ball.

Looked dangerous in his short cameo but doesn't close down defenders so I'd rather see a less talented striker who does.
  • Sordell can do one. Don't want him in a red shirt again.

Apologies. Sorry my post was made after getting home with the right ump yesterday. I should have had my rant on the post match thread, but everyone had said it all by the time I got back.

I take your point regarding an early recall outside of a loan window. However Bolton may have to consider cash flow as well before taking him back.

On another point though if he goes back in the loan window.

He is a lone player probably costing the club a fair bit in wages that is not being picked. Therefore if Bolton took him back then it would free up the possibility of getting in a different loan striker.

I think the problem is we need a target man/arial player for our free flowing hump the ball style when Kerm is not fit or when we are trying to see a game out. We have a runner in Church, unfortunately Piggot is a young lad who needs time but again is not really a target man imo.

Sordell in fairness to him would look a lot better if we had a craft with pace midfield playing the ball to feet and creating. Who knows we might play Stewart, Harriotts and him and it might come off.
  • Think we need to step back and look at the reality of our situation here.

Without Yann we have MS, SC and JP.

Who can possibly think that a pairing of the last two is going to be effective ? It actually worries me that SCP obviously does.

If Yann is not in the starting 11 then until we sign someone else we need to start Sordell with one of the other two. If we don't then expect to see more of what went down yesterday v Millwall where our strike force was totally nullified by average defenders.
  • I think we have seen enough to know that any 2 from 3 not includung Yann is not going to work in the hoof it up formations.

How do we know what is actually going on? How do we actually know that CP made the wrong call ( at the time it was made and not with the benefit of hindsight). I remember CP being asked about playing youngsters and he duly explained about putting too much pressure on them too soon etc., but he did add that the player's personality plays a large part and it was about making judgments. If the judgement proves to be wrong, then that gets factored in for the next time a judgement needs to be made.
Remember Leon and the stick he got? We changed/modified our opinions once we knew he had been suicidal, ditto with players with spinal fractures, wives with brain tumours, seriously ill children etc.
Maybe it's just worth remembering that we don't know what is happening behind the scenes so chucking blame about seems a tad daft? Although we are justifiably angry about yesterday's performance, more than ever, I want to know what the hell is going on at our club?

Quite possibly but two fairly lightweight channel runners whose strength is not holding the ball up or heading looks to me to be the weaker of the options.

  • I don't think anyone is suggesting CP made a wrong call. Lack of funds has meant we don't have proper cover for Yann, it could be that CP expected to get another striker in but wasn't allowed to at the death.
  • I don't think there's ever been such a gap between my expectations of a player when we signed them and how they turned out.

    Alonso ?

I don't think I had hugely high hopes for Alonso, with Sordell I was imagining the guy that did well for Watford and played at the Olympics, but we seem to have signed a player who just doesn't care about playing for Charlton. Granted yesterday's brief appearance was better than usual but that's mainly because he's set the bar so incredibly low that literally doing anything seems like an improvement.
  • send him 'home' a s a p and spend the salary on a player who at least looks as though he wants to be a Charlton player and is not here through duress or default.

  • He created our best chance with a lovely through ball to Church who then had the tamest shot I've seen in a while.

  • Nice to see a striker like Church run about like a headless chicken to support the cause but not if he is so knackered that when he gets his one clear chance his shot is so weak it hardly reaches the keeper.

On balance I would rather see a lazy twat score a hat-trick for us.

  • Church has no right foot. Should have belted it but tried to pass it past the on yesterday's performance the very sound Forde.

Both Striker Firmani and SHG make good points.

After 30 mins, Millwall worked out that they had nothing to fear from Church or Piggott in 352. 442 with quick wingers may have been the better starting line up. In this match, Sordell may have managed with some better service from Harriots / Stewart. Unfortunately, we will never know.

Sordell is supposed to be the back up for KMG.

It concerns me that he is not chosen and Church and Piggott (Church, a lightweight support striker / channel runner, and Joe Piggott - a youngster are preferred). I am not sure if that is because of what is going on in training or an error of judgement on CPs part.

It may be that with 442 it may not have worked either. Against any formation that includes Sordell / Church / Piggott , is going to fail against championship level defences (barring goals from defensive errors and corners).

The real trouble is that we have only one senior striker at the club in KMG, and that . There is a L1 lack of depth of quality in the squad, and it is evident that a couple of injuries or suspensions to main players leaves us struggling.

We may FPP compliant in terms of being / 3.8 million in losses to the 4 million allowed. That looks like leaving us in L1.

If Sordell can get his finger out and his head sorted, I am happy to see him do well.

There is a serious risk of relegation. We need to see if Sordell is going to make it. It is not working out at the moment, I am happy to give Sordell a chance, but time is running out. If Sordell is depressed for not cutting it at Bolton and does not want to be at Charlton then can the club afford to carry him ? We may be paying some of his wages and with £200,000 more that could make the difference in getting in a lone striker of better quality / mindset who can act as a better back up to KMG.

Posted without reading. Lincs says it concisely. \Would like to see him given a chance.
  • SHG "Sordell is supposed to be the back up for KMG." That is very worrying indeed if that is the case.

I don't see any similarity in their styles or abilities. Sordell, doesn't look like a player who can win high balls or hold it up. His finish in the cup against Hudds shows he can finish though.

Their styles may be different but back up in terms of a main striker who can lead the line and score goals. I do realise that Sordell is not a carbon copy of KMG. Who is ?

What approach play and formation would suit Sordell, I am not quite sure. Do we have the players for that, and if there is and Sordell is the main goal scoring striker, do we need to adapt the formation / style of play to get him in a position to score goals ?

Sordell did not manage in a 352 against Huddersfield either with Church. 352 does encourage passing.

Without KMG, there is no goal threat. Without a goal threat, we will not win games and be deservedly in the bottom 3 at the end of the season.

  • Sordell should start if Yann doesn't IMHO end of. If he doesn't show why we wanted him then send him back. I have a feeling that it's games he needs not being slagged off without being given a chance.
  • Can't be a good feeling being brought into a club, immediately relegated to 4th choice and then watching Piggott yesterday and still not getting the nod til 70 minutes. Wouldn't be surprised if he became a bit mopey at training. Not defending his apparent laziness, but that could be a cause

He got a start at Hudders and was not interested.
