  • Are you serious? He wasn't quite as bad as Harriott, but he wasn't far off it. Shocking!

    This.

agree he tried his best but unfortunatly has no pace to trouble the fullback , he has a great cross on him but hardly ever beats the defender to put it to use in dangerous areas Harriott was shocking though. Green, Harriott and Church are a bit powder puff, not the players we need as we fight relegation.

    And this.

I think our last decent winger was Colin Powell :-)
  • Just watched the highlights - and he was involved in the first three chances?
  • edited March 2014
Green along with Jackson looks like the only players who can create a goal.
Some of the balls he whips I'm are superb .
Sure , there are parts if his game that he really needs to work on but I think . as a winger , he brings balance to the side .
  • he was awful---end of. Who is going to show the free kick that went 20 feet over everyones head and the bar ? how many chances is this guy gona get ?
  • Danny's supposed world class crossing ability is one of the great Charlton myths

On the rare occasions he does get it over or round the defender it usually ends up somewhere near Charlton station

I genuinely can't believe there are still some pleading his case

This was a player who was out of his depth when we were romping league one as I bored myself with in the Waggy v Green debates 2 years ago

I hope he remembers the route to Dagenham

    Stealing a wage
  • he was awful---end of. Who is going to show the free kick that went 20 feet over everyones head and the bar ? how many chances is this guy gona get ?

Exactly. Only reason he gets put in the team in my eyes is to put decent crosses in. I completely lost it when he put that cross miles over the bar. I think he would struggle to perform consistently in league 1, too many chances

  • Finally some opinion that actually calls it as people see it rather than slate a player. Danny Green gives us something alternative with his delivery but the difference is that when it doesn't go right he is slated by many on this forum (unjustly). Typically when JJ's deliveries from corners was criticised last week he didnt get the abuse from many on this forum (and rightly so). We should be supporting our players and whilst it is ok to have an opinion that he is not talented enough for this level people shouldn't slate or judge him on one thing (free kick) last night. Danny certainly put in a good shift last night so the marks given by some is not balanced but just to have a dig at him which is counter productive. For the record I don't see as stated previously what the fuss is about Jordan Cousins and in the first half last night he was not getting involved or shutting down the opposition but in the second half he was very good (you could see Riga telling him to get tighter) but although I have that opinion of Jordan I'm happy to be proved wrong and wouldn't slate him as many others do of DG.

The difference is Jordan Cousins is in his first season being a first teamer in a football team. Danny Green has had three seasons to impress and he's never produced anything that looks even a little bit like form. Now me, I've always been a Danny Green apologist. Even now my heart does a little flutter when I see his name on the teamsheet, and I see him whipping crosses onto strikers' heads and smashing in a 30 yard winner. The reality is I'm an idiot. He's scored 4 goals for us in the league in three years. The first wasn't until the end of December, one was by accident and the other was a screamer against Derby when we were already 3-0 down. He also seems to enjoy scoring against Oxford in cups for some reason, taking his overall tally to a distressing 6. His assists record is disappointing, his inability to track back costs us goals, and the one thing he's meant to be really, really good at, the thing that merits his inclusion in our squad, continues to disappoint. Every corner is an attempt at goal despite the fact mid-30s David Seaman plays for zero of the teams we face, and often that doesn't even clear the first defender. Free kicks sail harmlessly over the bar or batter some poor sod in the wall, and crosses rarely find the head of a Charlton attacker. Add to that the fact he shirks challenges and runs out of steam after approximately 4 minutes of quite hard trying and you begin to see why Danny gets more stick than Jackson after a poor corner. Jackson runs himself into the ground, pops up with goals and bleeds for the team; Green plays every game like it's his testimonial. He seems like a lovely man, and even after this massive diatribe I still think he'll smash in a few goals to keep us up (he won't) but I don't think he merits comparison to Cousins or Jackson, nor has he been unduly harshly treated.
  • So Garry what are you saying :-)

You are of course spot on.
  • He never seems to look up before crossing, which makes me think it's largely fluke if a ball reaches a charlton shirt. I am aware that I've developed a dislike of him as a footballer and am probably judging him harshly as a result.

He is not 'awful' that's over the top.

Just needs to be more composed on the ball and needs better positional sense along with more confidence.

Thing about Green is, he has certain attributes that could have taken him along way. When he's having a good game he's great. But it's the complete opposite end of the pie when he's having a bad one. It's a bit psychological for danny boy.
  • There is a talented footballer there somewhere but he suffers from confidence and inconsistency.

He makes things happen, often by mistake like the cross which hit the bar yesterday. Yes the free kick that ended in the north stand was terrible but how about the one from a similar area in the first half which lead to obikas shot on the turn. It was dangerous.

He has had plenty of chances but not developed as a player so time to cut our losses and move on in the summer

He also needs to realise his defensive responsibilities involve more than jogging about twenty yards behind the attacking player and giving away stupid fouls for no real reason. Also maybe he should practice crossing the ball. And his shooting could do with improving, his goal record isn't very good at all. Other than that... he's alright I guess.
  • Too lazy for me - had too many chances to impress and not taken them.
  • I think he definitely offers something going forward, and we are so bereft of attacking guile at the moment that this can be useful. But he offers nothing defensively - we're lucky Wilson has covered well because I was watching Danny Green last night and he tracked back and got stuck in for the first 20 minutes or so, I thought maybe Riga had had a word or he was playing to impressed. Then he stopped. There were times when he was motionless leaving Wilson exposed or Poyet to read it and come in.
I think he's OK as an impact sub but my heart always sinks when I see his name in the starting line up. Arguably a better fit at RM than Cousins, but I'd rather have Pritchard for his work rate.

"Positional sense" I mentioned covers your points made. We all know he's no world beater and will never make the premier league with a club (touch wood) but he has the odd screamer goal under his belt and he has shown he can whip in a dangerous ball.

I used to hold a candle for Green but the flame went out months ago. He showed improvement at least last night. (1st half)
  • He is a winger. Shite most of the time. Good in flashes. Isn't that what wingers do?

World beater he ain't. I would settle for seeing him beat a defender once in a while! I don't have any kind of personal stake in the matter I just really can't see what ever made us think he was/could be special.

I understand what you are saying BUT the big boys don't score from a free kick every time, did you see Rooney a couple of weeks ago? his fk's were pony!
And yes I know he's had a few chances, but I think he has been made a bit of a scapegoat on here. I honestly think he is the best we have (in that position) he 'can' deliver quality and very hard to defend balls in my opinion.
I also think he will play a big part of the rest of our season.

  • I find it's Green movement off the ball, does he know how to pass and MOVE?

  • Give him a 2 year contract.
  • I think it says how pony we are and the lack of attacking skill and guile in our crab like midfield and attack that he can be anywhere near our team , the reason is prolly cos he has one ounce of skill and ability and although the others may possess it , most of the time they take the crab like option rather than gamble pushing forward
And the two players who did use to gamble with a forward motion got sold in January
  • Another thread that's ended up slagging off a player and the team. It's getting boring now, get behind them FFS!
  • I am not a huge fan of Danny Green. However, I did not think he played badly the other night against Bournemouth. He got stuck in and I thought he made some nice touches and did swing in a few dangerous balls. He obviously made some mistakes but I thought people were quick to get on his back because of these, just because it's Danny Green.

    CAFC, CAFC, CAFC, CAFC, CAFC......
  • An enigma who may feel more at home at Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes...........oh hang on a minute:-0
  • I would rather Tudgay get a run at right midfield. He neds to be a bit fitter and that means playing time. Has played a lot on the rhs and has a good scoring record.

    Redhenry.
Not much slagging off really, with exception of a couple it is just people saying they don't think he is good enough. We are fourth bottom, be a bit weird if everyone was happy and thought all our players were good enough, it is a message board.
  • I can see why the Manager gave green the nod. I agree, he does offer something different and I bet in training he is awesome. Green has the skill, no doubt, but maybe Rega can get this out of him. But at the moment we cannot afford performances like that. Use Green as a sub in the next few games, give him at least 15mins, get his confidence up and maybe he could make a difference when we need it.
  • I am not one for slagging off our slating Charlton players but I find him really hard to like, something about the way he goes about the football pitch just makes me dislike him as a player.
