If we do that, countless South Koreans and Japanese will die, not to mention the 50,000 American troops stationed in South Korea, the island of Guam, possibly even Hawaii.

I think NLA was being a bit 'tongue in cheek' - just illustrating the likely mind of the imbecile Trump.

So China's response to this crisis is to blame the Americans and South Korea for deploying anti missile defences in the south and for holding joint military exercises suggesting that it was "provocative".
I'm very concerned by this attitude when in realistic terms China is the only player that could influence Kim Jong-Un. As for Russia. They will always pretty much condemn anything the USA does on a point of principle. Not very helpful in this situation.
Every action that has been taken by North Korea over the last few years is moving their military towards a conflict. Economic sanctions are meaningless.
We really do need China to take a lead in this situation otherwise I really do think that the unthinkable might happen.
Those very same anti missile defences allow certain recon capabilities (don't remember the correct word) into China, which I recall China being unhappy with at the time. It was all over Chinese media at the time.
I've still not seen much about these most recent tests in the news, which is pretty worrying, but a large proportion of the general public here would definitely just think "fuck japan" imo.
I imagine China are far more concerned with their One Road, One Belt policy, rather than what the nutter next door is doing, I'm pretty sure they believe they can stop this point escalating beyond any point they decide.
But why should China do anything? They have been building air bases on Atolls in the south China sea for what reason? I think China are as thick as thieves with N Korea and while the attention is on N Korea they are expanding their own military aims.
This whole scenario has been set up by the Chinese to stop the International community from concentrating on them and their excessive military build up and land grab in the China Sea.
KJU is just a puppet of the Chinese, who could bring him down with a 'phone call.

As I've been told many times, clues in the name, south china sea, how could it belong to anyone else ;-)
If the Chinese really are "in bed" and actively, albeit behind the scenes pulling the strings with North Korea then I think we might well be fucked.
I doubt that is the case to be honest. What possible benefit to China would open conflict be ? I can see why the international community should condemn the military expansion that China are undergoing with their atoll grab but I believe that's just a realisation by the regime that as a super power they have to secure their sphere of influence in the same way the USA does in Guam. That doesn't particularly worry me.
What does worry me is the theory that China are orchestrating what's going on in NK.
If the US steps up pressure on China through trade they will have to sit up and take note. While i don't think they are in direct cahoots, DPRK is, if anything, a good buffer for China. This buffer is their primary interest.
The world has noticed what China is up to in the South China Sea, their maintenance of the status quo is to keep the US as far away as possible. Vietnam and Japan have an interest in keeping the world apprised of this.
If Trump was willing to carry out a couple of his campaign pledges - he could seriously damage the Chinese economy, hence their recent support of sanctions in the UN. They won't ever attack their neighbour.
Without doubt the sabre rattling has stepped up a notch this year in terms of missiles, but I don't believe they have the technology yet to go further - though that's not to say it's not getting closer - i don't think it will be in the next 12 months.

All those islands in the Indian Ocean best start learning Hindi then!
China is trying to increase it's influence in the region, tenfold it wasn't that long ago the Philippines announced they would stop buying arms from the US, I'll let you guess where they are going now.
If they can use this situation to show that it's America that is making this situation worse, you can bet your bottom dollar they will.
Look at the investment going into Pakistan / Sri Lanka / Burma / Laos, this money isn't being given away, nor is it being done to be nice to the neighbors.
I'm fairly confident this situation suits them very well, but it will never be allowed to escalate to open conflict, of that I'm sure.

Thanks for the insights Stu. All more or less what I've gathered and what smart people here in the states think about the China/DPRK relationship and their overall influence in the region. At some point the US has to stop poking hornets nests in an attempt to maintain a Military sphere of influence all over the world. It's not as easy as it used to be, we're not very good at it, and it causes escalations of rogue regimes, civil unrest, civil war, etc.

Do you really think it's not happening already?
With more military action and missile launches being threatened by NK since Tuesday's launch I think whoever is telling them needs to shout a little louder.

and Dave, I've been reliably informed that every Poundland is the entrance to a secret tunnel that leads straight back to China and they're just waiting for the word..

this is what i meant earlier when i said i thought the generals were taking this one. There's been no US action despite threats from Trump, so i reckon between Mattis, McMaster and Kelly they are handling it.
In my eyes the US is lucky to have them there, even if it's making a bit of a mockery of civilian oversight.

Yeah all great points and I agree. Mattis has repeatedly talked about the need for a healthy State Department and how important diplomacy is. He's also clearly fucked off by the transgender ban and basically has kicked the can down the road. When he came into the job he had a history of being very, very hawkish on Iran but even there he seems to have backed off.
McMaster is apparently hated by Trump and constantly targeted by the liked of Breitbart basically because he's smart and he likes to say nuanced things in meetings. Kelly has gotten rid of the deadwood very nicely.
It's a great point about civilian oversight. For those wondering, there has been a loose tradition that non-Military folks oversee the Military in some way, be in on the National Security Council, Secretary of Defense, etc.

I agree and find it really hard to understand why China doesn't even condemn the way Kim Jon-Un treats his own citizens, let alone the missile tests! I'd seriously place Kim Jon-Un on the same level as Hitler in terms of dictatorship and evilness.
I disagreed about our intervention in Iraq and Libya but if a war broke out with North Korea where our goverment choose to intervene I'd support it. Any oppotunity to remove Kim Jong-Un and get a leader in who is democratic and fair!

Yeah, recent history has taught us that's exactly how it goes down.

I could be wrong though!
There is no winner here (except maybe Abe with his militaristic aims), and perhaps they are waiting for NK to blow themselves out for another year.
Short termism, but what is the other option until the decapitation opportunity presents itself. That is not a chance to miss.
