Sorry KHA, he could easily have demanded a get-out clause at a relatively low fee. It is inconceivable that the club would have refused to allow him to sign a contract with even a £1m get-out clause rather than get into this situation.
Basically if we get any money it's only going to be for compensation on expenses accrued in development of the player. No compensation for loss of the player offthe books or to the playing side of things. Basically we'll get a small amount. He goes abroad and we get nothing.
To be fair that deal was in exchange for £6m a year of the TV money that the Premier League clubs could have kept for themselves.
We can't have it both ways. We should have shown faith in him before the press told us that Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona wanted to sign him.
wow, seems like yesterday when a fresh faced, excited diego appeared on cafc player in post match interview after his debut...
so, re today's disappointment (after y'days optimism), it was definitely looking iffy, the longer the on/off saga dragged on towards pre-season return day without a clear public statement from the boy - obviously got his turned down by all the attention. (i was not there), but if we truly dissect the last 20 odd games with diego, would we have stayed up without him?
I had hope he would stay up until that transformers ad. It was obvious with that he wasn't staying. As long as he doesn't go to west ham or spurs I won't mind so much, but I think it will be Spain.
Disappointed as he will be missed in the team next season and that team was beginning to take some shape.
When it comes to loyalty however, I do think lads who have come through the youth system have a certain debt of loyalty to the club to sign their first contract with the club. He did that and saw the contract through. Why should he sign another? What happens in 3 years when he saw that through and then did not sign, we all moan then instead?
It is not his fault the contract we offered originally was not long enough for us to fully realise his potential.
People like Kasey Palmer, who took our youth training and then left at the first opportunity without ever playing for us or getting us much in way of compensation annoy me much more.
I wish Poyet good luck in his career, but after just 20 games for us I won't be particularly interested in it.
He should have signed a 5 year contract and then thrown his toys out the pram 6 months later and left for Chelsea for a large sum and to triple his wages He would then be guaranteed a warm welcome reception on any further return to The Valley in the future
I'll be interested to see which national side he opts for. Born in Spain to Uruguayan parents but raised in England having played for all of the age groups. Take your pick Diego...
Frankly pissed off by this. Not with the club though. I suspect we did all we could to keep him.
I blame Jiminez and Slater first and foremost for dicking around and leaving us with no players contracted to the club.
Mostly I am very disappointed with Diego for the way he has conducted this. He'll go and have a great career, he'll make squillions of pounds and we will continue to function without him but Jenkinson and Shelvey repaid the club that invested all of our time and money in making them what they are. Diego has fucked off at the first sign of interest. I am 100% sure he has been tapped up. Thanks Diego - don't expect a hero's welcome if we play again you
Sorry KHA, he could easily have demanded a get-out clause at a relatively low fee. It is inconceivable that the club would have refused to allow him to sign a contract with even a £1m get-out clause rather than get into this situation.
But why should he? If he singed a deal with a £1m get out clause and he left two months later the club signing him would have given him £m less.
I, personally, fail to see why he owes the club so much money. I suspect that without him for those 20 games we would be in the third division. Is that not repayment enough?
He could have left to join his Dad, or another club, at any time over the last nine years yet he stayed, helped us to stay up and we might, still, get some compensation for him
I don't see why the talented players have to ensure that the clubs get money to run their academies when there are loads of players that benefit from the facilities and are let go for nothing.
Oh well. He's a good player but he's not a match winner and he's replaceable. Hopefully Cousins will get to play in his correct position now rather than being shunted out wide.
Bit disappointed that Diego has just walked. I was expecting him to announce that he'd signed for a proper team rather than just basically strolling off. No matter what people say about there being no loyalty in the game, it hurts. It hurts knowing you have a player in your ranks for so long, especially one with a bit more intrigue about him because of his dad, and then seeing him stroll off at the first available opportunity after getting some game time. You can see his reasons, but they don't suit our needs too well. The worst part is the potential lack of fee. But then we hardly ended up minted off Shelvey and Jenkinson either. All in all this has worked out perfectly for Diego; get some game time, do a job, get player of the year, get a pay rise at a better club. Leaves us scrambling but I suppose you could say that it's all worth it for the stability he provided to help keep us up and net the likes of Igor and get Morro to sign. It's going to sting though.
yes its Disappointing, but lets face it he is far to good for us and he wants to improve his career maybe play international football, for England or Spain or Uruguay whichever one it is he chooses. But come on lets not be bitter, He played well when he played, and we let his contract run down.
Bearing in mind "we" taught him everything how can he all of a sudden after 20 games be 'too good for us' ?
He should be playing in the Premier League, to be fair to him. I just hope he goes to a club where that is possible. If he goes to City or Chelsea, I'd be very disappointed. Not sure he'd get a fair crack of the whip at Spurs either. Might do at the Arse, as painful as it would be to see him there.
Class player who was a pleasure to watch so it's a shame he has decided not to stay but no surprise really as it was becoming quite obvious that he wasn't going to sign a new contract. One man doesn't make a team so it's onwards and upwards as it has always been when we have lost good players previously. If his heart ain't in it then we don't want him around. COYA!!
I can see both sides to this, loyalty, footballer is a short career, manager changes etc but I can't help but feel this has left a bitter taste.
He's a great player, above our level no doubt, but so were jenkinson and Shelvey. But leaving it this late in the summer to announce he would leave was a poor move by Diego. You could say he had to wait until we got a new manager but after 8 years of being trained by the club and having previously turned down moves to arsenal when he was younger I almost expected a bit more. Whatever compensation will be chucked our way will be very small in comparison to the kind of money we could have sold him for now, in January or next summer. In the days of financial FairPlay any kind of substantial transfer fee is very important. This, for me, is the most disappointing thing about poyet leaving like this.
As for "he could break his leg tomorrow" comments, this is true, footballers have short careers, but I seriously doubt the contract we offered was less than 3-4 years long. That kind of security is very important and I'm not sure he'll get such a long contract at his next club, that's not thinking about his wages. He's also from a family that I'm guessing aren't particularly badly off, so I'm not sure money would come into this. Lack of loyalty has a funny way of biting you back on the arse in time.
I'm almost as gutted about this as the sale of Scott Parker and leaves a similar bad taste.
I truly hope Poyet goes on and has a great career, but I can't help but feel this is a bad move, regardless who he signs for. I will probably boo him if he ever comes back to play at the valley, and I think a lot of other charlton fans will do the same. A massive shame, it didn't have to be like this Diego. I hope that a loyal person like Jonjo pips Diego to a World Cup 2018 and 2022 spot....
Gutted he has gone ,but I'm glad we can finally put this one to bed, Diego has made his choice and I'm disappointed he maybe wasn't as loyal as he should have been.
I know we would have all loved a big fee but at least we are financially stable and we are not desperate for it - not for 1 moment am I saying Im pleased with 400k but I'd rather he was going now then 12 months ago for that price
Thanks to him for helping us stay up and doing well in a difficult time, but if I'm being honest I have always said cousins to me COULD be better than poyet and I'd like us all to focus on betting behind him- I'm not just saying that , have always said it previous posts.
1 thing is he is a nice young man and good luck to him in the future and was gracious when leaving .. Unlike Parker , Murphy etc.
Just always remember no matter who walks through that door and who walks out .. There will always be a Charlton Athletic and we will always be here.
Too good for us last year, time will tell if he's too good for the class of 2014/15.
Personally think he at least owed us a contract so we have some kind of control over how much compensation we receive for him leaving, even if he had no intention of sticking around. His decision to just walk away, whilst understandable, will always slightly sour my memory of him.
Not too sure why people are saying he's too good for us. No player is 'too good' for us. That's just unbelievably negative thinking. If we had a whole team of players who were too good for us we might be in the Prem next season, and isn't that the whole point?
Comments
Chelsea a rot selfish reserves Diego in can is bastard and.
For the more forgiving......." again nuts the please us Diego kick in"

1 out of 4 of the out of contract players, proven at our level, we wanted to keep.
I said I'd judge Roland and his regime when we knew how many of those 4 players we were actually able to keep.
25% isn't great although Morro was (with Diego) in my personal top 2 of the 4.
