Disappointed he's gone but we have to move on.0
-
Was this announcement held back until we'd announced his replacement first?
The whole saga appears to have been a shambles, hope Gomes is signed up on a long term deal if he's got the potential.0 -
never liked his dad as player, or as brighton boss...has to have influenced the son to move on...0

I really don't understand how some people can be so unemotional, i can understand why he has gone, money/ego/career chances but why do we have to not be bitter about it, we are Charlton fans, i don't like seeing out club disrespected personally.
I don't wish him any serious ill will but the way he has handled this puts him with Defoe & Parker for me, i simply don't care what he does now, certainly can't wish him good luck.
Where as i still enjoy watching the likes of Shelvey & Jenkinson.4 -
How has he handled it exactly?1

He is never going to be hard up. He will inherit. He can buy both those things on eight grand a week plus, which is at least what we would have been offering him. Whether you or I are scathing of it does not change the facts.kings hill addick said:I don't understand what his family's wealth has to do with it. I don't expect his Dad to buy him a new house and/or a £50k car - both of which he'll be able to buy for himself if he signs for a big club.
In fact I am normally rather scathing of young men and women that have lemonade wages and Champagne lifestyles care of Mummy and Daddy.0 -
The owners have been trying for six months. They couldn't do anything before, because they weren't the owners then...cafctom said:All this tripe about "we gave him 8 years, he owes us"....
Well then if we were prepared to invest 8 years in him, then maybe we should have sorted a proper contract out for him a bit sooner rather than leaving it to this? Its our clubs responsibility to look after our investments, not his.1 -
ok, shoot me down, but uruguayan players have always struck me as tricky/slimy/a bit nasty - really hoped his mum's side would have bred some loyalty/fairness into him, but oh well, we move on...funny, the high of the last few days, all looking much more hopeful etc., then today's news....i look forward to seeing who turns up at sparrows lane tomorrow now!-6

Gutted. Biggest disappointment is that I won't get to see him playing - such a pleasure to watch.
Wish him every success. He was going to go sooner or later anyway, just a shame it's so soon.0 - Sponsored links:

Emotion doesn't come in to this new Charlton. Tick him off the spreadsheet and press save.12

At least we know where we are. I don't think it's all bad necessarily. Poyet's style means that to some extent the team had to be built around him. I am not wholly convinced that style works best in the Championship. If the salary he was presumably being offered is spent elsewhere, we may have an as good or better team than we might have imagined.
He was, however, a joy to watch in the 4 games that I managed to see him play. I hope he finds the right club.0 -
s'funny, i'm wearing my "run diego run" t-shirt today - in honor of one of my activist heroes, daniel andreas san diego.1

Right, because English players never screw clubs over...shootershill2tropics said:ok, shoot me down, but uruguayan players have always struck me as tricky/slimy/a bit nasty - really hoped his mum's side would have bred some loyalty/fairness into him, but oh well, we move on...funny, the high of the last few days, all looking much more hopeful etc., then today's news....i look forward to seeing who turns up at sparrows lane tomorrow now!

Lets get a good replacement wish the lad well and move on1

The people so emotionally scarred by all this, were you all this upset when we released Ade Azeez. Same age, been brought through the academy. Or is he easier to get over because hes not worth as much money???
The old 'no loyalty in football' gets trotted out when a player leaves, but there's just as much loyalty as there is guarantee. In no way can Poyet be blamed for living for the moment.
The difference between him and Parker is that a bigger. club came sniffing while he was contracted to us, and he made it evidently clear half way through a season that he wanted to piss off.

ok, fair point se9addick, it's just a sign of the (modern footballing) times...deep breath....on we go...coyr...now time for jordan and yoni to run the engine room, full steam ahead...0

I am absolutely fuming... I have not been so disgusted since THEY assassinated Saint Christopher of Powell.
Will the carnage never end?0 -
Wonder if the fact they finally knew for sure that he was leaving in the last few days, freed up the cash to sign Igor & offer Morro better terms...1

Sh1t happens . Deal with it and move on. We have probably taken from others in the same way. It is down to the individual viz Diego. He needed to be strong to stand up to his dad and play one more season for us but like most of the England internationals there is no backbone there. Never mind. Looking forward to next season just as much with or without Poyet.0

Take Church with you Diego.1

My analogy; I went to university. That university gave me an opportunity to learn, to improve myself and my employability which I was lucky enough at the time not to have to pay for. They did not promise me a job at the end of the course but afforded me every opportunity to make my self as successful as I could be. Some of my friends gave up mid course, some have gone on to have very successful careers others less so.ValleyGary said:The people so emotionally scarred by all this, were you all this upset when we released Ade Azeez. In return I have chosen through the alumni to give a monthly amount back to my university as I know this affords people coming up through the ranks behind me the same opportunities I had in a financial climate which is not as fortunate as the one that I had when I was studying.
Long winded way of saying I think Poyet did owe us a contract so we could get a 'return on our investment', I think all youth players do (unless we are really taking the piss).
Whether we release some is not relevant, we gave each of them an opportunity and spent our money to give them that opportunity.
I don't know if Poyet feels he owes CAFC, but maybe there should be a certain loyalty to future players as if all our younguns move on for little fee the club will surely, one day, decide the academy is not worth the cost.
As I posted earlier, Poyet signed his first contract and he has seen it out, he certainly did not owe us two. It is a shame it has dragged on into the summer but there never would have been a 'good time' for this news to be released.
I won't wish him good luck or bad luck particularly, he has left after 20 games, I just don't care about him anymore.

What about when Azeez was 16 and all he had was potential? We were loyal to him then and offered him a place as an academy scholar and then again when we offered him a pro contract. The exact same with Poyet it's just one fulfilled their promise and the other didn't. The club has invested a lot of resources and money in both players, one had the chance to repay that loyalty but said "stuff that I'm leaving", that is pretty unforgivable in my book. Thats why people are pissed off.ValleyGary said:The people so emotionally scarred by all this, were you all this upset when we released Ade Azeez. Same age, been brought through the academy. When I think of Poyet, he reminds me of Bobby Moore, George Best, Puskas, Stanley Matthews, Tom Finney, Garrincha & Duncan Edwards.
They're all dead to me........................6 -
When he was picked he gave us everything.
The powers that were/be hadn't offered him a contract at the right moment and that gave him freedom to make a choice, which he has made.
Diego leaving is a massive disappointment, but he has not acted in an underhand way, he is tempted by the possibilities that have opened up to him which seem more appealing than staying at a club who's footballing future is rather uncertain. If Diego stays it would be as much a step into the unknown for him as a new challenge is going to be.
I wish him the very best of luck myself and am intrigued regarding his future.
Ordinarily the loss of a big transfer fee would be one of the biggest downsides for me in all this, although we will indeed get something. However the money aspect of things seem to have a surreal quality at Charlton. If we have paid something like 3.5 million for Igor and Polish Pete, but also grab freebies like Cumberbatch and Ansah, get people in on short term contracts like Yoni and Bob himself, yet offer unusually lengthy ones to Igor, and Reza and the aforementioned PP, and also plod the traditional route with Jacko and Morro, all of that kind of stuff distances me from thinking too much about how it is being paid for. In that context 600k or 6million for Diego leaves me shrugging and a little bewildered.
On the plus side we could all see that playing Cousins on the right was awkward last season, and Jordan is now challenged to occupy the Poyet role which he was doing anyway before Poyet burst onto the scene. We have Wilson on the right flank now which is fair enough, but maybe not creative enough. Jacko will also soldier on in midfield and may be our most creative player if Yoni is simply the engine he says he is. We certainly need a bit more in midfield, wide players, and some creativity in the middle (unless I read Yoni wrongly).
Adios Diego though, I am one supporter who values your contribution and wish you well.11 -
Let him go! If he doesn`t want to play for Charlton, if he thinks he`s too good to play for Charlton f**k him! We have been through a lot worse than this over the years and we will survive and prosper with or without him. Players come and go but CAFC is forever! Goodbye Diego, pack your bag and f-off!3
