What caused you to sing the thing in the first place?
For a laugh?
Maybe a laugh now fella, as you seem to have got away from the incident with nothing more than a good tale to share with / impress your mates.
Won't be such a laugh next time when something that don't have to be too much worse will potentially see you charged, and with a football related / criminal charge that will be on your record and on your CV and make it very difficult to get a job / keep your job with, plus the shame your family goes through once the local press start printing your name, plus the ban etc that will come with it.
Most people make mistakes when they are young, most youngsters think 'banter' is a shield that offers some form of protection. it doesn't these days.
I'd take Brendon O'Connell's advice, move on and learn from it. It is relatively easy to get football related offences against you if you play up in any way, particularly at Charlton, and the consequences i can assure you will prove far greater than you realise.
If you chanted for a 'laugh', what is funny about it? Is it to see the amusing expressions of a shocked reaction from the general populace? Is it to exhibit a stunningly original bit of humour to others? Is it to imply that Brighton fans are somewhat diminished compared to the 100% hetrosexual Charlton support...because it is indeed laughable to imply that all Addicks are hetrosexual. Is it funny because the implication is that to a Brighton fan their football is their unfaithful love compared to their partner? It may even be because it is supposed to be a witty chant to an old tune...I can't see how it is particularly funny? Surely our support can be more original and creative in it's chants, and actually be a bit funny?
Funny that, Brighton fans dont find it offencive, all teams sing it, its football, its a laugh.
If you are a Liverpool supporter its never your fault, if you are a Millwall supporter it was somebody else's fault, if you are a true Charlton supporter its your fault, simples.
So the Police told you to leave Brighton, you didn't and got arrested trying to get another ticket. Which part of the coppers warning didn't you understand?
I also expect that if a Muslim did exactly what you did they would have been arrested?
There has been cases of abuse towards British soldiers and their families at marches, n I'm pretty sure most of them go unpunished

appriechiate the advise mate, i wasnt trying to impress anyone, we always sing it when we play brighton? u live and learn i suppose,
"Also, how come Muslims extreamists can sing during a march from our soilders 'british soilders burn in hell' and our aloud to get away with it beacuse freedom of speach" I assume when you witnessed this you called the police and they did nothing. In which case you have a legitimate case to take to the PCC.

That not the debate though is it! If BA had been Muslim singing the song at the same time, same place, he would have had the same outcome.
I bet you are only telling a small part of the story. I bet you argued with the copper and were generally a lot more of twat than appears even from your own account.
Why do you say that?
We all make mistakes, we all do stupid things we regret and look back on with embrassment or shame.
I honestly think BroadstairsAddick has been pretty brave and decent reporting his experience, I also believe that a thread like this has a chance to help folk reflect on a few things.

Not entirely, but it is relevant. 'Does your boyfriend know you're here' is polite compared to telling British soldiers and their families to burn in hell!
Something I don't 100% understand is why brighton have pink shirts and pink bibs, and don't expect songs about being gay to be sung? It's sung in the same way that we sing 'no one likes you cos you're scum' to millwall - it's all stereotypes. We get called trainspotters, millwall get called mindless racist skinhead thugs, brighton get called gay. It doesn't mean anyone ACTUALLY means these as insults

Think you're being a bit out of order there.
Made me laugh Brendan, i know im telling the truth on this thread, otherwise if i was lieing, noone of what u say would matter because i knew i would be in the wrong, the fact is, I was polite, i wasn't rude, i didn't swear, i wasn't being abusive. so he has the cheek to tell me im a twat when he dont know me, seems like hes twat to be fair. theirs always one.......

I didn't say you did mate. I said the person that said you did was being out of order. Have another read of it.
Irrelevant if the Brighton fans you spoke to didnt find it offensive, it is offensive. I in the past have sung songs at Brighton fans, but its an age thing, I dont do it anymore, I find it embarrasing now that I did. Ask yourself this, would it be ok to sing a racist song, because some black or asian people close by said it was ok?

Unlike most people on here i think the boy was harshly treated. but then I am against any laws that stop you saying (or singing) what you think. The laws have been set up on the basis that we are all so weak we can't bear to be offended any more. The problem is that free speech only exists when somebody can be offensive, if it is only allowed when it does not offend anybody it is not free in any way.
We have allowed free speech to be taken away bit by bit, now almost anybody can claim to be offended and more words are banned all the time. Stopping people sayinhg things does not stop them thinking them.

The bottom line is that the world has changed and no one is allowed to take the piss/indulge in banter/offend anyones 'human rights' and all the while that it is law, then incidents like BA's will happen. Being called a trainspotter is not against the law (yet) neither is millwall getting called mindless racist skinhead thugs (yet), homophobia is against the law (now).

Which was it in this instance - hatred or fear?
