  • You don't play rooney out wide like that I'd rather he didnt play at all than see a great player playing out of position and looking poor

A young inventive, forward thinking but inexperienced performance.
Shame we had to start the revolution against the brick wall that is Italy.

    Onwards and upwards

So, Rooney gets the blame, hey? Rooney's shite corner was followed by two pathetic crosses from other England players, but no comments

Was not just the corner, he was pathetic all game

Do we have to have a scapegoat? Overall a good performance - a bit more luck would have got a draw. Italy won the WC in 2006 let's not forget...

Barkley and Lallana to start next game. Thought sterling was our best player apart from the dodgy cross. Confident we will get 6 points from the next 2.

I'd rather have Rooney than Wellback. 442 Roy.

But he's had so many chances in his favoured position. To play him central today would have meant Sterling not playing in the role in which he starred first half.
Rooney's past his best before date.
  • Rooney wasn't meant to track back imo he was told to drop back and stay close but be ready to brake like he did for the goal

I don't see how anyone can say Italy had more desire. That's a lazy accusation in my book.

They scored a well worked set piece and took advantage of a slack bit of defending. Overall there were very little between the teams.

I used the word desire thinking specifically of the effort and commitment of the experienced old codgers Pirlo and Gerrard.

Not only was Pirlo the boss in that game he was among the most committed despite being the oldest man out there.

I am sure he would of been told to help the full back, on whatever side he played on and he never did

Played ok overall but we're going to give away chances from wide positions with this formation. It's positive but having two wingers or strikers playing in front of full backs that also like to get forward does leave us open. Sterling excellent, good finish from Sturridge and Cahill did well. We still have enough to win the other group games and qualify.

Thought it was a pretty even game. Draw would've been a fair result. Still beat Costa Rica and at least draw vs Uruguay and we should be okay

Not sure id say commited. After the second goal went In the fella was sat in the centre circle in his jacket and slippers with a Cuban on the go!

Italy is better at football than England. You'll never see a shitter Italian team, no Buffon, chiellini lumbering about at left back, no Maggio, no Rossi. Horrible side. I expect both teams to go out shortly.

    Phil Nevilleballs:

"...he likes to feel men up against him..."

and, after the ref had drawn a line in foam for a free kick

"The players getting behind the ref's imaginary line, there..."
  • Well that was dissapointing, luckily the exciting summer going on at Charlton wiill distract us all..............

Were you told about this by one of your amazing sources. Do you mean break? Or are you thinking of suddenly stopping?

I thought Welbeck had a cracking game, run his socks off

  • He did drop back he wasn't man to man with attacking Italian bit if you look he is tracking back narrow with the intention of on the turn of play and possession he breaks wide and the Italian.defence are too far off him to give him the five yds of space to deliver the ball

It worked once and that was his role

Had Wayne tracked closer the Italian defender or winger is closer meaning rooney and his lack of pace wouldn't expose the danger area

If you have watched rooney enough like I am sure you all have you would've seen him tracking back like a full back

Tonight he done what was asked of him.and to not get in the wrong position it's a risky tactic but it worked to a degree

The problem was the system didn't suit rooney so I personally wouldn't.play him.there

More bothered by how pony Gerrard was

To me it's all about ballotelli and sturridge both have the real ability to say I am here on the world stage

I think Mario will just rise above everything we have

This may come back to haunt but I think Ballotelli is overrated. I think Italy would be better off with Immobile against Cahill and Jagielka.
    Quote quote and quote again.

As someone who is pretty apathetic about the England team because time and time again, tournament after tournament they let you down I was quite impressed. At last a manager prepared to give youth a chance, a manager prepared to attack teams. We may struggle to get out the group, we may go out next round even if we do go through but the experience that Sterling, Sturridge, Llanana, Barkley, Welbeck etc are getting will be invaluable for the next two or three tournaments. Also have to remember that Baines, Jags, Cahill are playing in their first major tournament too. The future looks good.

One downside for me, Rooney. I can't see a role for him in the team. Still failed to score in a major finals. Great to say he's scored x number of England goals but he can't do it when it matters. I'd drop him personally because he's a spent force.
