Chart on BBC shows Rooney had just one touch in the penalty area all game. Can this be true? Astonishing
That's rubbish surely. He had at least three touches for his shot that went wide. He also wasn't playing as a centre forward so it's a misleading stat. He got the assist for only goal. Lovely cross with his left too. He needs to play centrally and up front.

IMO Rooney tends to track back when he gives away the ball and most of the time that is from a striker position where he has no track back responsibility. On the left , in front of Baines, he had that responsibility and did his job very poorly.
I don't think he is as bad as some claim but unfortunatly i think Johnson is our strongest fit player in that postion.
Thought about it more, maybe i was too harsh on Rooney, he did more then that cross.
He would be our best player for sure if he played to his full ability, i just don't wanna watch another World Cup campaign praying Rooney at his best turns up, if we are gonna go home, i would much rather watch Sterling, The Ox & Barkley all starting, getting experience for Russia in four years time, as with his fitness issues, i don't think Rooney will be playing in 4 years for England.
I now hope he proves me wrong and helps us blitz Uruguay on Thursday, come on Wayne make us all eat our words, please.

Not on his own for me as he comes too deep to get possession and of course if he loses the ball he hares back to win it but is then way way too deep if the ball moves forward quickly. With a 2nd striker up front his desire to hang back isn't too much of a problem.
These stats don't lie. 18 shots to 12, 8 on target to 5, 9 corners to 2, 3 saves 7.
1 goal to 2 was an unlucky result last night. We deserved a share of the points.
Watching the game in France they showed a good stat about 70 mins in, we'd passed the ball 380 times, whereas Italy had notched up about 550 by that point. Our pass completion rate was 85%, there's was 90%. Whilst I agree we played well and we're positive, I think they did enough to deserve it on the night. But by no means will I criticise the team - we played well and can be going into Uruguay in good spirits. Just need some finesse where it counts, and a bit more organisation at the back
But we were mainly chasing a gane. If wed.been 1-0 or 2-1 up we coukd have passed the pall sideways or backwords 200 times more like they did.
I know but I think because they controlled the play with more passes we were a little ragged toward the end. That heat and humidity suited a short game, letting the ball do the work. We definitely were a marked improvement on 2 years ago, and we definitely turned up. However if we work a bit around this area we can have a better chance of winning.
Not saying pirlo didnt have a good game.but ffs.its so.typically british to frickin go on about how good the opposition is for.90mins, does my head in. Imo Beckham could have done a similar job for us without much effort like Pirlo. Its not a hard roll to.play if your a baller.
As a brand Beckham is streets ahead. As a player Pirlo ,in comparison to Beckham ,is from another planet. Pirlo lives up to the hype and goes beyond it consistently, a rare player indeed. Beckham rarely lived up to his billing.
Strolls around the midfield at 40-odd and is still streets ahead of our midfield. Found space constantly even with our entire team trying to shut him down.
Nothing wrong with the team's spirit and attitude, and the individual ability is there - but our preparation looked really poor however - corners were awful, free kicks were wasted, a lot of the team came down with cramp and clearly were on their knees at the end, co-ordination between full backs and the midfield in front of them was non existent. We lost because we didn't fix the things that could have been fixed.
I don't think anybody really knew the implications of the Uruguay Costa Rica game at the time, but now the dust has settled- it is a big positive for England.
Accepting that Costa Rica are not world beaters - a draw against Uruguay and Italy beating Costa Rica and it means we have to beat Costa Rica as well as Uruguay beat Italy, if they do beat them at all. Had Uruguay won then we would expect both them and Italy to achieve 4 points independent of games with us. So we need to give thanks for that and take the positives from the game - and they were many IMO.
And say what you like about Johnson, but Italy threatened us on the left not the right. What we needed to do was play a fill time full back on the left and make sure he was supported- but that was for that match only. Other teams will pose different problems. Worth noting if we play Italy again. As somebody who has always promoted Baines above Cole for his attacking play, I think yesterday was a game that suited Cole. But he isn't at the world cup!
Agree there were many positives, and much to be heartened by if you take the longer view of trying to develop a decent England squad for future tournaments. I am pretty happy with Roy's squad and that the old guard are being cleared out to make room for the next generation, who will be less hyped and have a chance to develop without so much expectation to perform. This is planning for the future, which is not something Sven and Capello were interested in, nor could have been expected to worry about too much. England is starting to feel like England should, and I'm also finally able to watch them wholeheartedly, without the distaste that comes from watching John Terry play for 'my' team.
If we dont get out of the group we'll have been unlucky, though I think we will do it. But come Russia 2018, we'll be much more prepared and experienced, yet still with a youthful squad who will have had time to acclimatise to international football.
The future looks pretty bright at last, but god, it's taken a long, long time.
The approach that the youth are gaining experience, results don't matter much and it's all about 2016 and beyond........are the same people comfortable with that theory for Charlton?

If England have two poor seasons they don't end up in League 2, I guess?
And England can only play with what is available, in theory Charlton can sign anyone ( though right now I think "someone" would make a few feel a bit better ).
Rooney is playing too much for the team and not enough for himself. He comes very deep to pick it up, and only ever lays it off with the simple pass, rarely tries anything else unless he has no option (ie the assist). He lacks the arrogance that a player of his talents should have - an arrogance that supplies frequent magic.
His best moment in the game was when he had no players around him, and had no other choice but to take two players on and get a shot away. He powered past them and the shot was decent.
When he was a young player, he did that all the time, whether teammates were stood around him or not. I'll always remember that goal he scored at The Valley. His touch and eye for goal was unbelievable. He was a natural goalscorer, not an advanced midfield playmaker:
I don't think it's a matter of confidence. I personally think he was a more exciting player when he was a youngster, and that's because he's become too much of a cog in an articulated machine at Utd rather than an individually world class player.
He has to be dropped, because what's happened to him in the England side is something far more transformative than just a lack of form.
Sorry but I'm not accepting any Welbeck abuse. First of all Rooney was on the Baines' side so I'm not sure how he is at fault for the goal at all. He isn't a natural wide midfielder but has good work rate, pace, power and touch. There is a reason the Italian's kept attacking our left side rather than the side with Glen bloody Johnson in defence. He clearly threatened the full backs last night and made some great runs. He is one of the first names of the teamsheet for me and offers more than Rooney is in general play.

Shit
Send them home and start afresh. They're a waste of space on that pitch.

I'd love him to shut a load of people up and pull Uruguay apart and fill him with confidence

Bench him and play players in their proper positions.

Roy believed jags and Cahill could deal with crosses
It was the ball to pirlo he was more worried about so rooney had to split the two
He also had to be available for the pass after the turn around of possession that's how it looked to me and it worked as we scored from it
Quality, that is all.

It is enjoyable to watch when it is not against your team.

I'd put money on it he closed down and took more balls off the Italians than anyone else last night
