  • Havent really given an opinion on tactics at all but started Uefa B but stopped due to new job, then lost interest the older my boy got.

Yeah your level 1s are easy, Level 2 is (IMO) about your confidence to coach, but still opened my eyes immensely to a game I thought I knew everything about for 25 years, Ive never watched a game the same since passing level 2.

Level 3 (Uefa B) was brilliant what I started but a whole new level,

I thought we did ok. Rooney on another day would have scored that. Quality cross into the box for the goal so well done there.

Only 4 teams out of 42 have lost their first game in the world cup and still qualified. But I still have hope.

And one of them was England in 86.
  • We can still qualify, Spain lost their fist game and won it last time.
It was a 100% improvement from the last time we played Italy, bottled it and played for a draw.
Nice to see us attack teams, yes, the defence wasn't great but you didn't have to be bleeding Nostradamus to work that out.
If we can find replacements in the squad for Gerrard, Lampard, Milner, Johnson, then that will be all the South Africa shit gone.........Except for one.......... :)

No one want to lose that game!
  • Henderson certainly played a lot better than i was expecting.

I've a fear we may look back on this WC and see a pattern in disappointment in the England team over recent tournaments, and tat is trying to 'accomodate' our best players to the detriment of the 'team'.

We negatively impacted ourselves for a number of years sticking with the Gerrard / Lampard combo in the hope that it would suddenly work because they were two of our better players. It didn't.

The same i fear will now happen with Rooney.

Thank God we only have one decent goalie then!!!

100% spot on but, given the options available to him, I wouldn't rule out Roy (despite his vigorous defence of Rooney after the game) dropping him if we don't get a win against the thugs.
After this WC, Rooney's club career may get fluid with van Gaal presumably likely to give RVP his preferred role at Man U, which would no doubt cause the fat one to throw his toys out of the pram at some point.

What I like to think of as the Scholes Paradigm. Successive England managers fannied about trying to accomodate Beckham, Gerrard and Lampard into their favoured positions/role when our one truly world class player at the time gets stuck out on the left wing when he should have had the team built around him.
  • If we play Italy again - I would definitely play Shaw and Baines from the start. If we want to drop Rooney - it tells you all you need to know about the English - You know- the nation that puts Bryan Robson on teh teamsheet before Glenn Hoddle - the nation which largely overlooks a talent like LeTissier. If we are going to do anything in this World cup we play our best players and Rooney is one of those!!!!

Seems strange all those people calling for him to be played in his correct position too. When I see Sturridge, Sterling and Rooney I see versatility - Why not let them chop and change through the game? Would be a nightmare for defenders!!!

Actually scrap that - stat is since went to 32 team tournament

I'd say drop rooney for the remaining group games. Bring him back for the knockouts (if we make it through :S) and he'll be chomping at the bit.

I would normally agree with you, except on the bench is Lallana, Barkley & the Ox, they are hardly a bunch of cloggers.

Im not saying Rooney should be dropped but we now have class alternatives to him, who are not afraid to take on a defender & make some magic happen.

  • A serious question. How many of us on here lending our learned opinion of where Roy went wrong actually have A) Any coaching experience at all or B) A coaching qualification, and if so what level? I have sod all, but I do tend to keep out of tactical debates as a result.

That's the beauty of football though. Every will offer opinions - and rightly so.
  • I'd keep Rooney in. But move him either up front with Sturridge or play him centrally. He shouldn't be out on either wing. That should be Sterling and Lallana. Roy has to find a place for Barkley in the middle though.
  • Is it too soon to be thinking of the play offs?
  • If what I am hearing is correct, Spain lost their first game at the last WC and then went on to win the competition.
  • I'm just glad that we played positively and didn't embarrass ourselves. I don't care if we lose as long as we play attacking football (goes for Charlton too). Come on England!
  • Roy got it pretty much spot on for the Italy game in my view, wouldn't expect too many changes for Uruguay.

Let's be honest, the difference between the sides was largely a story of chances taken, and we lost our way a little after the subs. Suarez apart, we have enough in that team to beat the other two sides in the group.
  • It was telling that uruguay didn't bring Suarez on for the last 20 minutes - Yes, he will have had another few days but they depserately needed his qulaity. I think we won't be facingthe same Suarez who was so effectivefor Liverpool.

  • Best England WC performance since Italia 90. Really exciting, positive and technically impressive.

Who was the old bloke with the wig playing at left-half though?
  • It will take for rooney to retire for him to be dropped. Think of the (not so) 'golden generation'. Them players should have been dropped years ago, but it took for half of them to be drawing pensions before they finally got the boot. We just seem to pick our players on reputation. Other countries don't, they pick a team that can play together and win. He should be dropped for Lallana (the only player with technique). Keep Barkley as an impact sub.

Absolutely, and I am just interested to find out if any of those opinions are coming from someone with more knowledge about football than I have TRR.

  • Mate is Italian, watched it at home with his family. Woke up next morning, someone had been up their drive and keyed both sides of their car. Didn't have anyrhing up about Italy, so reckons it must have been one of his neighbours.

    Nice people about

My Car was keyed last week. Sub human Scum everywhere.
  • I'd advocate capital punishment for that sort of thing. The most cowardly, vicious thing to do something like that to someone's property.
  • I agree. You gain nothing from that. Absolutely nothing. It's a spiteful, cowardly act of premeditated malice. I can't even begin to understand the mentality of some people. Absolute turdnuggets.
  • Balotelli's done alright for himself

  • Im not having that. How has he pulled the bird in the red top.
