Completely agree with PeterGage; I enjoy his more humourous approach. He was right too (backed up by the excellent Lee Dixon) to highlight the way players over-react to the slightest touch. We all know it happens but there were Vierra and - to a lesser extent - Cannavaro, telling us it was all ok. Chiles passionately argued the case for the fan who doesn't feel the need to pretend when we all know it's cheating despite the protestations of those who like to close ranks and "keep it in the family".
It's Chiles's inability to get his words out that does my peanut in. He ums, ahs and repeats himself constantly and just comes across as being really unprofessional. Whilst Lineker is one of the smuggest men on TV I think that he does his job pretty well.
He is there to present the programme and to bring the 'expert' panelists into play. He is a presenter, not a pundit.
he's terrible at it though, can't help but throw his two cents in with his questions "why don't they do that? That's the sensible option surely!!" why doesn't he just ask "should they do x or y? Lee what do you think?" He throws his opinions out thinly veiled with questions and its bloody irritating.
He's fine, decent enough bloke who doesn't pretend to be some kind of expert (read the "England v Italy" thread to see how many of them we have on CL), comes across with the fans point of view (much like Jeff Stelling does on Sky) and punctures the pompous "we know best" attitude of a few ex-pros who weren't good or dedicated enough to become coaches themselves. He has a dream job and the level of hatred levelled against him can only be good old fashioned envy - he's just a TV presenter FFS, the way some go on you would think he was Harold Shipman...
He has the face similar to the top of a swede and the football knowledge of a turnip.
I remember when he first started on BBC and he gave the impression he was a baggies fan who didn't know much about the football world. Fair enough. But now all those years later and he is still the same clueless div as he was.
Worst thing is Cannavaro is my all time favourite player and to see him sitting there next to Chiles visually thinking "who is this clown" makes it more painful.
I dont mind him and dont get the vitriol aimed at him.
Im not a fan of Lineker... far too pleased with himself, tho he is a good presenter.
Agree 100% with you there Curb It.
I know a couple of people who have worked with Lineker. Some interesting stories.
Oh come on, Lineker has done well for himself. He should look pleased with himself. A world class finisher and half-decent footballer, a TV personality, an endless supply of Walkers Crisps and I'd have a smug face like him if I pulled a bird that looked like his!!!

Ha, that's true enough
I do think he's a good presenter, just has that edge of smugness.

Hate Linekar, so smug his whole head would be up his own arse if it wasn't for the big ears. It's shocking the BBC pay him a million a year for MOTD and sports personality of the year.
The simple fact of the matter is this: if you have an interest and a good knowledge of football you will watch the football, regardless of who is presenting, doing punditry or commentating.
If you are not but you'd like to be you may start watching football and someone like Chiles' leading questions and Lee Dixon's simplistic answers are inclusive of those people. My mum always used to say that she liked Richard Keys & Andy Gray back when he was on Sky Sports because he helped her understand what was going on, me and my dad just thought they were a couple of patronising t***.
Broadcasters, especially those on ITV & Sky Sports, want to have the highest ratings possible. Those of us who understand and enjoy football are guaranteed viewers, those of us who aren't and need it explained to them in layman's terms may be put off by the sort of high level of punditry you're more likely to find in the back pages of the broadsheets.
Accept the fact that our presenters, pundits and commentators are bad...it's not going to change.
Got nothing against his personality, I just thought it was woefully unprofessional that he was struggling to keep it going through the rain break in Miami, having equally struggled when England's qualifier in Poland was delayed and then postponed. It's the week before a World Cup starts, there is not a shortage of things to discuss, you should not be struggling to fill the time by making quips about talking slowly so that you don't run out of things to say!
Not sure who's decision it was to get Cannavaro on the panel. Ticks all of the boxes for the perfect World Cup pundit, but his grasp of English isn't good enough to make a meaningful contribution. They keep asking him questions and he answers a different question!

When he greeted the commentators for the first match the other day with.....'And it's a big Brazilian World Cup hello to you Clive'...I fully expected him to add AH-HA at the end. Unfortunately he is no Alan P.1 I'm afraid I just can't be doing with the bloke. Unprofessional in his approach and a pain to listen to (so I don't).
Like I say, it sounds like an evem split between those of us who know or think we know a bit about football and not being all that fussed about having a non-personable minion doing the or adrian chiles
I don't care, I normally switch over/make a brew during the break and am not bothered by the build up. If I am watching I think if nothing else he encourages debate either on forums, in the pub or social media over him or with the pundits on something like cheating
Another one I won't miss. Seems like a nice bloke, but will always remember how much he struggled to fill air time when Poland vs England kick off was delayed (and subsequently cancelled), and again when play was suspended due to a storm during England's World Cup warm up against Honduras last summer. The week before the World Cup starts and you can't think of anything to talk about. Jeez....
Don't like him on TV and is useless where Football is concerned but funnily enough I like him on Radio 5 must be the fact that you cannot see him. Quite often great Radio braodcasters don't work on TV.

Great face for radio
I don't particularly mind him, I don't particular like him. He's there to introduce the football as far as I'm concerned.
I prefer him to the clean cut un-opinionated Sky Sports presenter type. He's a normal bloke who loves his football, good luck to him.

If he is trying to be humorous, it just gets completely lost while you have to sit and wait for him to finally spit it out!
