Johann Berg Gudmundsson - random updates

  • JBG is a class player, no doubt about it, but I'm not sure he's done quite enough yet to earn a move to the Premier League. He's bound to attract interest from the Championship sides with promotion aspirations and the benefit of parachute money but hopefully we can persuade him to sign an extension with us, even if it's only for an additional year. If he isn't prepared to do that, I suspect that RD won't be prepared to let him run into the last year of his contract and will look to cash in. That would be disappointing but a reasonable course of action for the club to adopt.

I suspect the article in the Football League Paper is complete speculation and the only question in my mind is whether and to what extent JBG's agent has encouraged it. The reference to Nottingham Forest is particularly ridiculous, as they have no chance of promotion via the play-offs, are currently subject to a transfer embargo and failed in February to make an instalment payment due to Peterborough for Assombalonga (they subsequently coughed the money up after a full transfer ban was imposed).

Let's hope that we can pick up a couple of good players in the summer and generate an attractive narrative for JBG, our other good players and, of course, for our supporters.

Easily a mid table prem player.
I was hoping for a Gud free kick at the tool Box on Friday
I can't see him hanging round after this season.
  • Out of interest, what sort of price would the club expect to get for JBG should he be sold? Still young and will score goals, but only year left on his contract. If there were multiple Prem teams interested then I reckon it could be close to £4mil.
  • Johann Berg Gudmundsson
£5.9mil for left foot + 100K for right foot.

Can only be sold as a pair !

    6 million then

  • Two year contract.
    One year left.
Massive TV deal for premiership clubs.
How much did we pay? (did we pay?)
Six million minimum I would have thought, plus achievement bonuses, plus 20% of any profit.
    Makes sense to me.
  • The contract situation is going to be the issue. I am guessing we offered him longer but he wouldn't consider it as we were probably viewed as a stepping stone to the Premier League.

He would be perfect for an established mid table premiership club. He'd fit in very well at somewhere like Swansea.

I don't believe he'll sign a new contract with us and I don't believe Roland will want him to go on a freebie, so the outcome is inevitable.

Reckon he'll be gone in the summer.
  • I think he might be gone in the summer too but I still don't think he is a rounded enough player to get regular games in the PL. Still. Sitting on your hands earning 40k a week will no doubt do the talking.
  • He played for Dick Advocaat at AZ .A possible signing for the Mackems ?
  • he's possibly our best attacking midfielder since reid, but for a few million bob and if the network have a replacement lined up then thanks guddy! If he wasn't so ridiculously one footed he'd easily be a prem player now

  • One footed never done C. Jenson any harm!
  • The fact that he only signed a 2 year contract showed that his stay was never likely to be a long term one unless we got promotion, and I've got no problem selling him if we get a good fee, it's not like we've nurtured him, and he's part of the fabric of the club.
He's the sort of player who will attract a good fee, as his youtube highlights reel will be packed full of great free kicks and long range efforts.
  • Look at some of the players in the squads of Sunderland, Burnley, Swansea, Stoke, Hull etc.

Gudmundsson is definitely capable of being in one of those clubs.
  • Why is everyone so negative about him going he's got another year left and who knows perhaps they will offer him an extension

I'm sure they will, but will he sign it?
  • I think he's more suited to other leagues. Lacks pace and a right peg (cue Wigan away assist highlights). Don't get me wrong, I think he's been fantastic for us and I am not slagging him off !

The thing is..., (and this is the important bit), Its not CAFC getting any fee, its the network, and Roland may need to balance the books.
  • I'm sure that JBG signing a new contract would very much depend on a significant salary increase. Is that really Roland's way ? I think it far more likely RD will want to cash in and bring in another potential bargain.

For me it's really all about the standard of his replacement. I do feel confident in saying that whoever it might be won't be the finished article.

I'll be pretty annoyed if we were to get rid of him.

You keep your better players, but everyone has their price I suppose.

In an ideal situation we keep our quality and add to it. Try to get top six in a year or two. I'm not convinced that's important to RD. I suspect he wants to prove you can run a football club and not lose shed loads of money yet still be competitive. Only way that can work is by buying cheap selling high or produce your own stars and sell them on. What's happened so far doesn't make me think I'm wrong. His network allows him the possibility of moving players around to suit and even allows him a punt or two. (Polish Pete) that might not come off but can still be utilised within "the family".

I think that every season we can expect significant squad change and I don't see anything to suggest a plan to build slowly retaining our very best and adding slowly. I believe it's all about the business and Roland's experiment and not necessarily about the end result of the football.

Some nut on here mentioned a bumpy ride. I think he's spot on.

....with us seeing a relegation if I was a betting man.
  • JBG plays for us, but the question is, is he our player. If he is essentially a staprix asset then things are different to the usual.
  • Good news. Get him signed up!!
  • Surely a better strategy for RD would be to sign JBG up to an improved contract similar to how Spurs and Liverpool handled Bale and Suarez. Didn't both sign up to long term contracts and then leave less than 12 months into the contract? That way the player is happy at a higher salary and we cannot be ransomed into selling him off to cheaply if he is tied to a long term contract.

Out of interest does anyone know how much JBG is on and how much they would expect we have to pay him for him to stay?

    No. None of us know.

Excellent news from the ever reliable Dr Kish - "Gudmundsson is happy at The Valley and preliminary talks have already taken place about extending his deal, which expires at the end of next season."

If he signs an extension, that would be a real statement of intent for next season. This team has quality and with a few astute additions, we can really challenge next season.

This would be a very positive sign
