Sad thing is, Hodgson is STILL going to get bollocked by sections of the press tomorrow (the good saves Hart needed to make, ONLY 2-0, and relatively late goals etc etc) because that sells better than praising an astute manager getting tactics right and decent counter attacking football (or as the Sun will no doubt put it 'forced on the back foot all game'...)
I thought Joe Hart played well , made a couple of good saves and kept us in it, the clearance by Cahill was John Terryesque, sets is up nicely for the group, still think the Germans would rip us apart, but well done England, well done Roy.

I bet The Sun had the headline CUCKOO CLOTS all ready for tomorrow's back page had we have lost.

Although they won, Germany were poor last night against Scotland

Your right VG they were poor , but I think they had 4/5 players missing through injury, they know how to do tournaments though, couldn't believe their manager had been in the job for 10 years! Can you imagine Roy being in the job for 10 years, the press would go mental.

The thing about the Germans is even when they play badly, they always find a way to win.
I thought it an impressive performance from the kids. This is the only way forward to build to the next world cup. 4-3-3 was great to see and all the front three involved in the important first goal.
Need a more attacking right back in that formation, but a very good start.
Going back to the 1st half when Welbeck got slated by all & sundry for allegedly messing up the cross, I thought the blame lay with Sterling as he checked his run

To be fair England have a few missing as well, and the Germans do have slight weaknesses after the retirements of 3 key players. I can't believe Lahm has retired from international football at the age of 30 and Mertesacker at the age of 29! Spain won 3 consecutive major tournaments, surely they could have continued to at least the Euros in 2 years? It's not as if either of them is showing signs of wear and tear or obvious decline.

Yep, that's what we thought as well. If he'd thrown himself at it he would've made contact, though admittedly who knows where it would've ended up. And if Church had scuffed a shot like that one from Rooney in the first half I can imagine the howls of anguish here.
I read page one and page six of this thread. I'll go through the rest tomorrow, but pleased to see most people seem to be delighted with what was a terrific result. Why the fuck are some people never happy when we win, but are creaming themselves when another nation spawns a victory "because they are so much more efficient/skilful/ mature/pragmatic/tactically aware than England"?
"yay a win, but not overly impressive" - what the fuck do you want? Seriously, as a Charlton fan, are you overwhelmed week in week out by the total football that brings us the 6-0 win we have all come to expect at The Valley?
My pal from Bolton in the bar tonight, who, whilst wearing his England shirt and hat, is so typical: "Ooh, their number nine was the man of the match" - yes mate, but ours scored two fucking goals!!!!
Well said mate, you could pick some holes in the German team if you wanted to, but they are World Champions, and could rightly tell you to bog off!
Clearly England are a work in progress, but at least they passed the ball better and there was a discernible shape and pattern to how they were trying to play, without Steven Gerrard trying 'Hollywood' passes, and losing possession again and again.
The press/public reaction never cease to amaze me, apart from 1966 we have never reached a major final, and yet the expectation seems to be that that is where we should be reaching.
For whatever reason, we do not produce good enough teams/players to reach that gold standard, so we should take what pleasure we can from decent victories like tonight!!

Indeed.
Germany scrape past Scotland 2-1: "That's the Germans for you, they always grind out a result even when they don't play well."
England beat Scotland 3-2 last year: "Fucking hell! How can we only beat Scotland 3-2, they are absolute shit!"
Gonna post without reading the majority of this thread as I can imagine theres some negativity however... really pleased with last night. Away to a country who got further than us in the world cup, with a good handful of probable first teamer's out. Nobody really shone but I dont expect them to at this stage.
Most of all I'm pleased for Roy as for once he asked people to go out and do a job and they did. Thought Cahill was quality, mom for me although of course Wellbeck deserves plaudits for getting in the right positions and never stopping running.
If Charlton went away and won 0-2 against a team that finished top half last season everyone would be knocking one out to Igor scoring a brace and Bikey being a rock.
Well reading this thread is a surprise. I assumed the game was on Wednesday night. I couldnt understand why Bluewater was so bloody quiet last night...

exactly my point. Welbeck gets the scapegoat treatment cos we cant be seen to criticise the media darling Sterling. hopefully the rest of his performance and two well taken goals will give him some respite
Good result for sure but I don't think the performance will have France, Germany, Holland, Italy and Spain quaking in their boots. We need to improve greatly to have a decent run at the tournament in 2016, if we qualify.
The Swiss were very disappointing.
Ha - ha. Post of the week. I don't even know why you bothered with the first four words. Sorry that you were disappointed that England's opposition didn't mean you could say "I told you so".

Cool comments TuttTutt, as always.

Well done Roy.
Shin the bag
All's well that ends well
WEL done England.

Good performance and result. Should secure qualification lol. Pleased for Roy.
Decent away support (apart from that palace tune garbage - which I'm afraid to say won't be going away). Lots of abuse / digs at the FA.
