My Evo wasn't obnoxiously loud, had a standard stereo and I never parked it and acted like a nob in it. It's just a great car, brilliant handling, fun (but not exactly comfortable) to drive and no harm done.
Insurance was a bit steep but that's a personal choice.
If I had wanted to drive a bland, anonymous car that is as cheap as chips to run then I would - but I didnt. Same with OP - he's obviously a car fan so, if he can afford it, let him.
Questions: This is from Mitsubishi's web site re the Evo X - "All vehicles will be fitted with a data recorder which is connected through the On-board diagnostic (OBD) system. This will record details such as driving style, performance, vehicle diagnostics, and present location. Details of the data will be available to both CCC and the registered owner of the vehicle. The fitment of, and reporting of data from this device is a condition of the vehicle warranty. A three year subscription to the service is included in the vehicle price." First, what's CCC stand for? Second, Isn't it actually illegal to void the warranty under EU law if the data recorder is removed? Third, Surely no one would buy one with this fitted? Getting an order for "CCC" to disclose these data would be the first thing the police would do in the event that there was an accident and blame needed to be apportioned.
CCC is Colt Car Company. It's the UK retail arm of Mitsubishi. I think most cars are going to or are already fitted with telematics devices. Imagine it will be a necessity to avoid large insurance premiums also.
Golf GTI is better at that price point. The Ralliart has an Evo chassis but is very limited without spending quite a bit of cash. Gear Box isn't great either when I drove one.
If you have any intention of modifying the car then get an Evo.

2004 Evo VIII 260 can be picked up for around £7-8k I think. About £1500 (maybe less) and it's a 400 bhp monster
The Evo X SST is auto but expensive to modify if your are going over 400BHP. There was a VII auto also but as stated, very rare.
Swisdom is right also, a 260 can be taken to 380 - 400bhp for the cost of a fuel pump, decat, 3" exhaust and remap. The 260 also comes with the stronger 5 speed gearbox. I wouldn't go higher than 400 ft/lb torque on standard internals though on any Evo, there is also no need, it's just pub figures. Updated Brakes, Suspension and 400BHP make for a very fun fast road car within the safe limits of the engine.
Just don't test drive an Evo if you aren't going to get one, everything else just won't compare!
