  • I do like classic cars, owned a couple, volvo p1800 had it completely restored and a vauxhall cresta hydramatic the only british car that bore any resemblance to those american classics of the 50's & 60's.

but haven't a clue what an evo or scooby are?

a vauxhall cresta hydramatic the only british car that bore any resemblance to those american classics of the 50's & 60's.

I know where you're coming from but the Cresta's fins weren't really that pronounced, perhaps less so than the Wolseley 15 for example. IMO the most American-looking car to come out of the UK was the Ford Consul Classic and its two-door coupe derivative - the first car with the Capri name. There was also the Ford Zephyr/Zodiac Mk II & III; Sunbeam Alpine and Tiger; Daimler Dart SP250; and Triumph Vitesse. To name but a few. And I give you the spectacularly useless Nash Metropolitan which was actually and laughably designed and initially only sold in the North American market (where they weren't exactly well known for buying 1200cc cars....). Was there anything, ever so horrible? (I know it was an American concept but it was built in the UK by BMC.)

No tail fins, but the Austin A90 Atlantic (three headlights - who thought up that one!?) was very American.

yep also owned a ford consul Capri, your right about the crestas fins but still think it beats the others you mentioned. loved the speedo it changed colour the faster you drove, from green, orange to red.

I loved the look of the nash metropolitan almost bought one of them. do you remember the amphibian car once saw one going down the thames, can't remember who made them, maybe the germans?

They were called amphicars and made in Germany (with triumph herald engines)
  • The Ford Pilot V8 also looked like something straight out of a USA 1920s gangster movie! Trouble was, Ford UK was making and trying to sell them in the early 1950s!
A mate had an ancient one for a while until he drove it into a wall. The thing was actually quite powerful for the time but had zero handling and no brakes to speak of.
@sillav nitram Out of interest, did the Cresta have those vacuum-operated windscreen wipers that got slower the more quickly you went? What a laugh a minute they were on the Ford models of the era.

  • Pick it up in a couple of weeks. They're refurbing the wheels and doing a scratch and a service .Might get the engine remapped.
  • Anyone recommend a company that remaps engines? Sanspeed Bexleyheath?
  • There's this lot amdtuning.com/index.cfm in Thurrock. I believe they specialise in Audis but do Scoobys, Evos and the like too. Might be worth a call?
  • Cheers mate

Hi Wayne. Well done on your purchase. My advice would be to enjoy the car for a while before modding it and get the winter out the way. The Ralliart ECU can be programmed using EcuTek, which is much more customisable and can add launch control etc to the SST box. A map is likely to cost you around £500-600. The superchip route is ok if you don't intend to mod any further, but once it's starts it doesn't stop. The Ralliart runs very rich on fuel as well which with a proper map on a dyno should be leaned out a little by a proper tuner. I used to use http://www.hayesdynotech.co.uk who are based in Erith. They are Evo specialists and are a well respected trader on the MLR (Mistubishi Lancer Register, biggest Evo forum). I'd recommend joining the forum as well and asking your modding questions. There are traders on there who custom map Ralliarts and will advise on further mods like brakes, exhaust, CAI, Intercooler etc.

    Enjoy!!
  • AMD tuning reckon they can get an extra 50bhp out of the Ralliart which I'm impressed with.Qouted £595, seemed steep but after reading Marks post maybe not. I'll contact the guys in Erith

Not bad. I understand they've got a good reputation. I was going to use them to replace the rubbish leaking Audi DRC suspension system on my RS4 with some KW coilovers but got rid of the car instead!

Have used the guys in Thurrock to install and uprated clutch and a new flywheel. Before they bought AMD they put a REVO map on my Cupra which got me 300bhp at the front wheels. Nightmare in the wet.

My mate has an S3 and they have done so much work on his car, he is pushing around 500bhp mark these days and has just installed DSG. Crazy.

Anyway Shaun who owns the place is a nice guy, you can trust them to do a good job.
  • We run a remapping company if you're interested, and have experience of these cars, you can probably find reviews of us if you google us - FlashRemapping Limited. We are part of the Viezu group, have full underwritten insurance and lifetime software guarantee (i've become an advert). We are part of the group that have remapped all the BT fleet for economy but we specialise in performance maps, and we work for home or offer a full mobile service or garage service with dyno. It would depend what you're after quote-wise but pm me if you're interested - we'd offer a decent Charlton supporting quote obviously! If you're car is a Ralliart it will require an Ecu-tek licence. www.flashremapping.co.uk.

  • Flash Remapping done my car this morning. Quick, simple and a very competive price. Charlton fan to boot.

Took the car out this afternoon for a proper run, nearly sh@t myself...lol. Thanks Dave, will be contacting you when I decide I need more BHP.
  • About to have have a new clutch and duel mass flywheel been advised to have a solid conversion done?
    Any one had this done?

Once I get the wheels sorted I'll be going for an exhaust and brake upgrade. Anybody recommend anyone who can supply and fit said items in the Sidcup area?
  • Anyone?
  • Stop watching Eastenders and please answer. Lol

Looks like @WayneK got to use those extra horses in his Evo but was hitting the tractor such a good idea? And he'd just had those wheels refurbed too!
Classic quote from a witness: "There wasn't much I could see because the large tractor was in the way, but I suspect they were probably both going too fast.

  • A Ford Cortina once owned by England and Manchester City striker Francis Lee is up for auction.

The Ford Cortina 1600E was one of 30 loaned by Ford to the defending world champions from the England team for the duration of the World Cup in Mexico in 1970.

  • Currently balancing up my next car as I look to shift on my 21 plate Porsche Macan Turbo. Looking for another performance SUV, but not liking the 18 month wait for another Porker.

Test drove an X3M Competition last week. Fucking ballistically quick and much better spec than the Porsche, but residuals scare me a bit. And sounded shit out the back.

Then tried an F Pace SVR which sounded like the gates of hell had been opened when I floored it - but it just seems so unnecessary nowadays to have a 500+ bhp V8.

Merc residuals make them a no.

Will likely look for a 12 month old Macan GTS, but will probably be paying new prices for it.
