The Selfie Stick

Sister-in-law got one of these yesterday, and was very pleased with it too. She doesn't do sports etc that I could understand (just about) using it for, strapping it to your bike etc, she's going to use it when she's out getting pissed every other night with her other over-compensating, recently divorced friends.

What I want to know is why anyone would want to take a 2ft pole on a night out to take a bloody selfie?

Firstly, surely that's more awkward than just taking a digital camera out and setting it on delay mode on the other side of your table? Or more effort than asking a random other drinker to take a photo for you?

Secondly, can't you just enjoy your night out without the need for facebooking bloody selfies every two minutes? And hashtagging #selfie #barname #hilarious #bestnightever #imnotboredhonest

I'm sad this is going to become a 'thing'.

Anyone got any ideas why anyone would want one?!

I work at a very busy tourist site and these are becoming more and more popular each month.
Noticed them around a year ago being solely used by Chinese tourists but now it's anyone and everyone.
I guess for accessibility they make sense, but mostly seemed to be wasted on people (Ala original posters sister in law).

How are they supposed to push the button when the camera is on the end of a great big stick in the end of their arm?
Do they need another stick for the other arm to push the button?

My mate lives in Singapore where they are ten a penny. She had to bring 10 home last time for all our mates kids. My other friend was over recently and I asked her to bring home 3 for a mates kids Christmas pressies. Which she did. Then handed them to me in the pub, and I left them on the bloody train. Waste of money.

They are a funny gimmick but for the youngsters.
