I think he's a more effective full back than he is a winger. No idea where the opposing sentiment has come from.
Don't forget he played MULTIPLE games at full back last season while Solly spent most of it on the sidelines and he almost won POTY.
I can actually never take anything you say seriously again if that is a genuine comment
It was very genuine. Solly only played 11 games last season but the rest of them, Wilson filled in at right back (apart from one game where I think Morrison struggled with it).
According to last season's statbank, Wilson averaged 6.41 for the season (39 apps). For comparison, Hamer got 6.46 in 32 apps and Jackson got 6.22 in 35 apps.

Weird thing to say. The fact that we survived without Solly last season is great credit to Wilson. I like him at right midfield because he offers defensive support as well as goals when he's on form, which generally suits our set-up, but he's a very decent full back
Other than his three recent appearances (Blackburn, Watford and Brighton) during which he looked absolutely lost, I don't think his performances this season have been too bad-Norwich away and Colchester spring to mind.
And echoing Callum's sentiments, I rate him better as a right back-he got better and better playing there last season, hence the POTY runner up. People only remember the lesser performances though.....
Barring a massive turnaround, a contract looks unlikely though so a move looks on the cards. And Powell will get the best out of him. As he will any other players he manages to pick up from our squad (if he's got any sense).
Hemay be an in/out player due to confidence, but he tries hard andif he hitsform, he will be a fans favourite, because he'll feed off the fans and give the love back double. A very nice natured player with heart. I still recall our away game at Blackpool last season where he came over to the fans twice and brought shirts to throw to the fans. No other player had taken the initiative.
Good squad utility player. Average right back, average right midfield. Good wing back. Very good for the team spirit. Not treated well at Charlton this year under the crap new owner.

I think that we must be talking about a different Lawrie Wilson! Offers good defensive support as a RM when he EVENTUALLY gets back. And as for very decent full back?! Do me a favour!! We have problems far bigger than RD if our fans think LW is good enough!

As I have said many times on other threads, Wilson's marks would not have been so high each game if he didn't have that stupid song, and / or he was a network player
Spoke to him briefly last night, too much of a gent to slag anyone off but you can tell he's being forced out of the club and is gutted. A great guy and a decent confidence player who will walk through walls for the right manager. Looks like he'll be joining the likes of Hughes, Hamer and Morrison as characters the club could and should of held on to but chose to replace with Belgian mercenaries
Lawrie if you;re reading these threads. Please stay. You'll probably be here long after the experiment has ended. Don't be another statistic. You've been treated like shite, but you'll be alright. However if CP comes in for you. Run like the wind.

Other than maybe a few it has nothing at all to do with having a song or not being a network player, just a lot of people that have a different opinion to you.
He played right back for most of last season and did a good job. Never a Premier League player, clearly not as good as Solly. He's not a technical or creative player and he's someone that makes the most of what he's got. Nothing wrong with having a few players like that in this league.
What is it about his game that is apparently so poor he can't do a job for a lower Championship side?

Considering his contract expires this summer, I can't see him being offered a new one...........
Lawrie Wilson is a great character but not the greatest of players. Unfortunatley, he is likely to be replaced with a poor / mediocre network player with much less character.

Loïc Négo? Under contract until 2017 currently loaned to Ujpest Dozsa only until end of season. :-(

Ah, but can he "do" Little Bo Peep as well as Lawrie ?
if he gets another chance at Charlton, he's got to take it. He was given chances against Blackburn and Watford and played himself out of the team. He's now third choice right back and second choice right midfielder behind our second top goalscorer. I like Wilson but don't see that he's been treated badly.
When I think of Lawrie Wilson, I always think back to what John Robinson was like as a young player when we first signed him from Brighton. Robbo was, shall we say, not entirely impressive in the early days but he, like Lawrie, was a great character, who worked hard for the 90 mins and, as it turned out, even harder in training to improve himself. Robbo, never really had a bag full of tricks, or stand out pace or even particularly great creativity, but what he did have (which Lawrie hasn't for a year now) was a manager who believed in him and worked with him and gave him patience and chances.
Eventually Robbo repaid that faith and proved to be a true Valley cult hero, was a first choice in two promotion winning teams, played regularly (and well) at Premiership and international level and even won Welsh player of the year. I don't think anyone saw that much potential in him when we first got him except maybe Curbs. IIRC most fans thought more of the flashier but less consistent Mark "the other Robbo" Robson, but Johnny R's achievements stand testament to what a hard working player can achieve with determination in the right environment.
Fat chance of Lawrie getting that in SE7 right now though. Much as it pains me to say it, it feels like players like him should move on for their own good as much as anything else right now, but don't expect him to be replaced with a vastly superior player.
At least one of his poor performances was playing on left. I wonder how much better some of the squad would be if played in preferred positions. Options for passes are reduced if you are kicking with wrong foot.
Morrison, Wilson, Jacko all treated like shit under BP which came to a full on disagreement and ended with BP being dismissed, one of the few things RD has got right and shown leadership in at the right time

None of the old charlton lot seem to be at their best this season and who can blame them when they have to go to work every day with a load of tripe.
Will be a good signing for udders and only a few more to get rid of before roly can draft in some of his own euro chuff.
