    Sooooo

    Pot 1
    Russia
    Germany
    Brazil
    Portugal
    Argentina
    Belgium
    Poland
    France

    Pot 2
    Spain
    Peru
    Switzerland
    England
    Colombia
    Mexico
    Uruguay
    Croatia

    Pot 3
    Denmark
    Iceland
    Costa Rica
    Sweden
    Tunisia
    Egypt
    Senegal
    Iran

    Pot 4
    Serbia
    Nigeria
    Australia
    Japan
    Morocco
    Panama
    South Korea
    Saudi Arabia

Best group for England by ranking: Russia, Senegal, Saudi Arabia (we couldn't draw Iran from Pot 3 if another AFC nation is already in the group so the next lowest ranked team is Senegal).

Worst group for England by ranking: Germany, Costa Rica, Nigeria (we would not be able to draw a third UEFA nation into our group so we can discount Iceland and Denmark.

  • All Whites robbed for a penalty in the 1st minute.
Peru robbed for a penalty later in the 1st half (clear handball from Winston Reid).
Apart from that, Peru were just a much better team and it didn't help the All Whites, that Chris Wood didn't play the full 90 mins.
  • And that he missed that sitter minutes from the end with only the goalie in front of him

    That's a clear penalty, isn't it???
  • England may have stumbled upon their most effective tactic to go into the World Cup in the last two games. Nil nils in the knockout stage force a penalty shootout which IMO is our best chance of beating a Germany or a Brazil. Yes it may be less exciting when there's less goals but you can't be beat if you don't concede.

Sadly people will say that England's World Cup win will be tainted if we take that approach yet fail to realise that the trend will have been started by Portugal at Euro 2016 when they barely won a match in 90mins

Greece did it in 2004. The World Cup is harder as the level of opposition and style of play is a lot better the further you go compared to Euros.

To be fair to Greece they won all their games except for two Group results... they just aimed to score and park the bus
  • Congratulations Peru. You are a team which is very easy on the eye and I’m sure you’ll be a great addition to this World Cup. Might even make them my “dark horse” for the latter rounds.

Unlucky NZ. You fought hard and bravely. It was always going to be an uphill struggle and losing to Peru 2-0 over two legs is no disgrace.

Smash and grab against a poor France, Czech Rep (ET) and a bottling Portugal. I'm just saying you will need a bit more than that to go far in a WC.
  • so as for the draw you can only get 1 team from each confederation?

    easiest would be;

poland ( discounted russia for home support etc )
    egypt
    australia

    hardest would be;
    germany
    costa rica
    nigeria

That is 2 in total - so your first group is correct.
England and Poland being the 2 from Europe.

Whatever the draw, we are going to have to book the team hotel for all four weeks now.
Usually for the WC, England books in for two weeks, then picks up the cancellation booking from Scotland or ROI after the group stages

Very dismissive and unfair on Greece.

Those poor hotel managers in Brazil.

Made me happy I won over a £100 when Greece won the 2004 European Championships.

I will take a win however it comes, football is about winning in whatever style best suits your team.

Greece deserved to be Euro 04 champs, Portugal deserved to win Euro 16 because they got the job done.

The so called purists really annoy me, especially the whining kind who get annoyed when a team dares to actually work hard on defending rather then stand back and clap the oppositions attacking players.

You seen many England penalty shoot out wins in your time?
Law of averages says we're due to win a few... eventually... some time... please God....

    Totally agree.
If anyone ever asks what type of football do you prefer I always reply winning football.
