The reason Mercedes cars are silver is due to weight reducing. Years ago F1 cars raced in their respective countries designated colour (Britain-Green, France-Blue, Belgium-Yellow etc). Germany’s colour was white but in the 30’s their car was over the weight limit so they stripped the paint to get it under and created the Silver Arrows.sam3110 said:That's what I expected a lot of cars to look like this season, lots of bare carbon to keep weight down to a minimum.
How long until a team finds a way to colour the carbon enough to technically run with no paint at all, just stickers?5 -

will be almost indistinguishable from the Haas

Unfortunately it's completely untrue and just some random claptrap the 1930's version of Toto Wolff or Christian Horner made up in his memoirs0 -
Its slightly different I guess, but yeah too similar to the Haas which is bloody typical ... Best AT was when it was predominantly white with the rear of the car blue0

With the amount of black on show (I read Mercedes may be running and black and silver car this year) to allow for bare carbon fibre, I reckon it might be a bit tough distinguishing between cars on TV this year.2

Yeah their race suits dont have any of the Petronas blue in it this year, so be surprised if its on the car as well.Exiled_Addick said:With the amount of black on show (I read Mercedes may be running and black and silver car this year) to allow for bare carbon fibre, I reckon it might be a bit tough distinguishing between cars on TV this year.0 -

Still think the Aston should have an awful lot more of the lime green on it, like their GT cars.

It's going to be difficult to tell a lot of the grid apart this season with all the exposed carbon everywhere for weight saving, would have loved this colour on the Aston.2 -

Could be the bad picture but that sidepod looks very different from any of last yearsLTKapal said:Alpine was also spotted on track.
Ferrari is my favourite livery so far - looks a stronger shade of red than last year. Disappointing how boring they all are in the main though.0 -

There's still a surprising amount of variation in side-pod design. usually by now everyone has figured out who has the best concept and started copying it, but none of the concepts look identical, although they all seem to be generally shrinking. Ferrari look to have some of the biggest and most "traditional" looking side-pods.Leeds_Addick said:

Yeah Toto has just said exactly what you originally quoted about the bare carbon keeping the weight down.sam3110 said:sam3110 said:That's what I expected a lot of cars to look like this season, lots of bare carbon to keep weight down to a minimum.

The Mercedes looks stunning. Still no side pods though, which didn’t prove beneficial last year. Fingers crossed they’ve got it covered off this time.
