Great win today and with all our problems to occupy us it's strange how the Wednesday fans wind me up so much. Their fans were singing some stupid new song about Wednesday coming back in a very intimidating way along Floyd Rd and it was no surprise whe police had to intervene. Their massive fans are so arrogant and that victory was sweet. Tango man, hope you enjoyed the match, you are a credit to your club.
People keep talking about one swallow and all that. However, everything has to start somewhere and I view today as a positive. One game at a time. Come on Karel, you can do it. Demonstrations aside, we must view this as a positive.
I'm not sure where this leaves Aherne-Grant. Thought Reza showed us today that he actually has kicked a football before and Lookman came on a terrorised the Wednesday fullback. Mak had a great game too
What a difference! Already been said by others but Diarra was immense, along with JJ, Reza, Mak, Baur and the rest of the team. Lovely pass from Fox for Reza's goal. Our youngsters looked so promising and when Holmes Dennis passed to Lookman, you could tell they have played together regularly as he knew exactly where Ade would be! Great credit to Jason Euell. More please! RD and KM out though.
One swallow doesn't make a summer but I thought Carole got her tic tacs spot on today. 4-2-3-1 worked for the players that we have available. JBG was superb in that free role. And Reza made some great runs. Wednesday thought they could just turn up and take the points today but they weren't really in it. Did Henderson make a save of note? Agree that Diarra is better suited to central midfield. Anyway, onwards and upwards
It was a 4-4-2 Midfield Diamond. Diarra back in midfield....Hallelujah! Play your best player in the key role.
Woke up to find it p****** down with rain and thought sod it I'm not going to bother with a 70 mile round trip to the game. Then spoke to Len's Little girl on the phone later and she persuaded me to go even though she was unable to. My neighbour, formerly known as the lucky charm as we had a run of wins every time he came, happened to come outside at the right / wrong time and I asked him if he fancied it today which he did.
A dilemma on arrival as a desire to protest conflicted with a desire for a pint. The lack of serviceable pubs serving a pint of proper bitter forced us into Bartrams but I sacrificed the usual programme and jackpot tickets as a financial gesture.
We came out into the Car Park shortly after 2:30 and waved our Roland Out flyers around and joined in the chanting. I then caught sight of Mick Everett and felt desperately for him and his conflicting position with all this as both a fan and employee. Having exchanged nods with him I felt that I'd made my token protest and headed for my seat.
To the game. Body language from the players was much better than of late from the off and Jackson was getting in faces and geeing them up. How fitting he scored the first goal! Was it his 50th for the Club? Having sacrificed my programme I couldn't check! If not it deserved to be and must have been his 49th in any event. I do hope he makes the 50 if he hasn't. Nobody deserves it more.
Strange seeing Reza mixing it physically, pressing and flying into tackles. He too fully deserved his goal. Jackson, for his inspirational qualities, narrowly shaded man of the match for me from Diarra. Anyone thinking Diarra is a 34 / 35 year old seeking one more payday a la Fatarse Hasselbaink should have been there today. The man was full of quality. Such a shame he is not younger but, let's be honest, if he was he wouldn't be at Charlton!
I cannot criticise any player today with the possible exception of Fox who I felt was out of sorts. That said he got a crucial foot in near the end to prevent Wednesday making it 3-2.
Young Lookman showed some good touches during his cameo and young Holmes-Dennis did a good job on his "wrong" side when substituting for Solly. I hope the five foot three man's knees are not shot for a long period once more.
Last night in the aftermath of the Salford game I posted about the likely heap of shit I was going to witness today in comparison. Thank you guys for proving me spectacularly wrong! Yes one can find things to nitpick about if one digs deep enough but today we needed to stop the rot and the boys did that and some.
The intensity shown in the first half is what all of us want to see, it helped with Sheffield Wednesday not turning up until Nabby Sarr gave them an assist we absolutely needed the 2 goal cushion after attacking our own goal for the first half. And I was immensely grateful for the opposition neglecting our only attacking threat to meet a ball on the penalty spot. We played well against a team that were very lazy and we scored the rewards
Reza best player has begun to repay the faith and undying love I have given to him. Seeing him kick the fuck out of the Wednesday right back has made me very happy.
Wow! Really enjoyed that. Diarra immense. Front 2 working well together and working hard. Crowd were great and team fed off it. Holmes Dennis looked like he's a seasoned pro. JBG getting on the ball loads. Really was impressed and have to say team were set up perfectly and everyone seemed to know there job. If we continue to look as organised and play as well, I for one will not mind Karel keeping hold of the job a bit longer. I think Jason Euell is also making a difference as Holmes Dennis and lookman did not look out of place at all.
Makienok is the most underrated player at the club, brings so much. Great performance! THD in for Fox and wouldn't change anything else. JBG mustard in a free role... Not a fan but fair play to KF today, mixed it up and spot on
Some credit to the interim team for moving Diarra into midfield and very clearly for instilling a belief which has been absent since August. I'd have liked the intensity to have continued beyond the hour, but to be fair we'd made Wednesday look poor for long periods. Even Fox had his moment (for Reza's goal). Sarr had a daft 10 minutes but it only cost us one undeserved giveaway. The stay-away 'fans' should be ashamed of themselves. We can still hate Roland, but the team needs as many of us as possible to get behind them.
1) Would love to know who decided to set the midfield up in a diamond. Wonder whether it was Carol, Jason Euell or the senior players? Anyway, hats off to whoever made the decision as it worked a treat today.
2) Very telling to see that it was Jason Euell directing things from the touchline. Carol looked much less involved.
3) As others have said, Diarra was immense today in midfield. Must be worth giving him a run there in the next few games.
4) There might just be a player in Ba, Had a good game today but he needs to play to that standard consistently. At half-time I was thinking the same about Sarr. Then in the second half he goes and falls over, costing us a goal, and after that he was very rocky. I'm still not sure about him. (What I am sure about is giving Morrison a free transfer and spending a lot of money on Sarr as his replacement is absurd).
5) Makienok was outstanding today as well. Won everything in the air, put a lot of effort in in closing the Wednesday defenders down and scored a well-deserved goal.
6) Think we may now know why Solly has been so bad recently - I wonder if his knee has been playing him up in recent games. If it has, then more bad management from the Belgian clowns in forcing him to play 3 times a week as we don't have another experienced right back at the club.
7) And finally - and sadly - enjoy young Ademola Lookman for the next few months. A friend of mine does some scouting for Norwich and when I saw him recently, he told me about a brilliant young prospect he had seen at a Under-21 game recently. Yup, you guessed it, Mr Lookman. He's already told Norwich to get down and watch him. I assume all the big Premiership clubs already know about this young man and no doubt Roland will be happy to sell him for a couple of pounds at the first opportunity.
Oh, and on a very enjoyable day, can I sinply end by saying, f**k off Roland.
I remember Jason Euell playing for quite a successful Charlton team that used a diamond formation...
I remember him playing his best football when he was in a 3 man midfield with Jensen and Parker. Jason was the box to box runner and his energy, stamina and goals complemented the other 2 really well. Who did he line up with in the diamond?

Really liked what I saw in young Lookman - pace, confidence, can beat players and a sensible head when nothing was on - he made sure we kept possession. You're probably right about him being snapped up but that would be such a shame. A rare bright star, potentially.

It leaves Ahearne-Grant needing to work hard and improve, which is exactly how it should be for a young player. He's had far too much responsibility this season and having other players relieving the pressure will be good for him in the long run

At the same time he should be very pleased with his three goals in three months so far this season...
