I'm not too sure what everyone was expecting when he only really came in yesterday; he's probably only just realised how shitty things are now - and how successive changes have degraded not only the club as a whole, but also the dynamic of the team. I imagine he's got a few sleepless nights coming up trying to get his head around where we can go next.
As for the interview itself, a few interesting points:
-> He's mentioned the ability to win 30%, this looks as though he's going to try and return to winning win-able games and minimising damage against those teams who will win. However, the way we're shipping goals I reckon this may be a bit more dangerous than before. It's always going to be a risky strategy though.
-> He really emphasised the lack of confidence in the team. I think this is something we knew, but he came across as though he had a lot of understanding as to how the players feel and how incapable they feel they are.
-> Mentions player fitness; I didn't realise this was such a big issue in the squad to be honest. Then again - as has been pointed out, we've bought in 3 players without match fitness to reinforce us (A real WTF.) and he was playing IV up top. Not quite sure what he's expecting there.
-> He’s never been relegated, and he doesn’t want to - and this is why he’s here. I'm not sure he'll have had a relegation battle quite like this though. Confidence is good, but I think the situation warrants a bit more urgency than he's been exposed too.
-> Calls on the supporters too; this is a fairly obvious one though.
Louis I am a critical guy in these areas, but your first question on about seven minutes was absolutely perfect, and perfectly put. I would also say that Jose's answer was quite impressive. He says he is here for Charlton never mind Duchatelet, he seems to say he wants to help despite Duchatelet.
A very interesting interview indeed, and light years away from the rubbish from 'we weren't sharp enough' Fraeye.
Riga places emphasis on having to face the 'reality'. I take that to mean he has an idea what must happen, and he expects that to be allowed, including unquestioning support from Duchatelet who has to face the reality as much as the rest of us.
Riga did not come across there as an apologist, but a man with a (fecking virtually impossible) job to do.
He is at risk of being undermined of course, by the regime. I imagine that Lookman will be sold from under him because of the Watt fiasco, maybe another one or two decent ones too like JBG or Cousins. He is also at risk of only being allowed a Williams/Vaz Te/Johnson level of recruitment which won't work.
I think that Jose is on a hiding to nothing, however if he succeeds he is a hero, if he fails the reasons (not excuses for him) will make a pile higher than a pyramid.
Very good interview. I trust Riga, like I trusted Powell.
He says he came back, because he has an affinity with Charlton and their fans.
He didn't come back for Roland.
I like the bloke and I wish him every success.
Support Riga and the team. Not the regime (RD & KM).
I like Riga but have serious questions about any manager prepared to work under RD, especially when he has been treated poorly by him in the past. The whole regime is broken and unfortunately this very much includes Riga imo, however nice a chap he might be.

Agreed, and he didn't sound well. It has obviously been a hectic week for him. Negotiating with Roland is enough to stress anyone out.
I thought he sounded ill too. Was trying to make up my mind whether he actually has some kind of throat problem or whether it was because he was screaming from the sidelines for 90 minutes.

Screaming for 90 min. Didn't leave the technical area and was constantly giving instructions.
Shows his integrity that he took responsibility even though he has only been back a day. A bloody good assessment in just 24 hours.
I obviously get the anger directed at the owner and EIC and also the players for that matter, but I reckon the last person who should be copping the flack at the moment is Riga. Even though he's supposed to be another RD 'yes man', give him at least 6-7 games before sticking him in with the others eh?
Well at last we've got someone who at least sounds like a manager. Shame they didn't get him in when he became available before these soul destroying last 3 defeats. Big ask to pick up the club this time. Need 4 decent new players to stand a chance imho.
In a way the poor bastard just can't win. If he can't keep us up then he gets abuse and vitriol and probably the sack, again. If he manages to keep us up then KM and Co. will simply smugly pat themselves on the back for yet another appointment that was 'right at the time' and resolutely ignore the whole sorry mess of mistakes and arrogance that meant they had to make it in the first place.
On the other hand... no matter what, I think he is a fundamentally decent guy and a decent if not exceptional manager, albeit one with a seeming masochistic streak. Fraeye is and was a chancer and a brown-noser who learned far too late that spin solves nothing. Riga is a man who knows what needs to be done, and how to do it. Whether he or anyone can pull it off is another question entirely...
This is it now. Get behind Jose because if we go down it could be a long way back. Sport is partly won in the mind and our players now have a very fragile mentality - they need our support and to score first in games. Once we concede it's usually the start of a collapse. We need to win our next game and it should be treated like a cup final.

“I feel like I have something special with Charlton… I don’t know why.”
We can all understand that, mate...
:- )
The boy has brought me bad news and depressing interviews for months if not years now.
Good work by the way LM.

This man is not the enemy.
So. what happened at Blackpool then ?!
Worth a read.

The man has integrity and I with him well.
