England v Portugal

  • Kane and Vardy worked well together against Germany and Turkey. Rooney is the conundrum here and unbalances the team. Hodgson will always start him though.

Of our strikers, Vardy (Sturridge and Rashford) have the pace to get behind the defence, while Kane and Rooney are best played in the slightly withdrawn striker position, but not both unless Rooney literally plays in central midfield

I think you need a pacey striker to play on the shoulder and stretch the defence

Woah woah woah... did you really expect our players to put their bodies on the line a week before the tournament?

    Any relation to Noah?
  • Why do players who pick he right pass, shoot at the right time, or weight the ball perfectly week in week out suddenly fail to do any of that when they put on an England shirt? Most people would have had most of that team as their starting 11, forget formations or patterns, how many individual errors were there from players who automatically get it right on any given Saturday? It's unique.

Guess they know where their teammates will make runs etc, but I definitely agree players suddenly look worse - must be a conference thing too.
I don't disagree, but I think one outstanding example was early on, when Walker overlapped club mate Kane on the right, and Kane bizarrely played it left into a crowd of players?

I've never seen such a passionless performance from a so-called England team.

Did you miss the 2010 world cup?

That should have said confidence! Plays a big part I think.
  • I thought it was a behind closed doors game. I drove home from the gym last night listening to the first 35 mins on the radio and never heard the crowd once?

Funny isnt it... For years our friendlies have been rather boring contests.... The Turkey game in Manchester and Australia game in Sunderland both see good games, then back at Wembley its another boring one, wonder why?

Not enough beach balls being thrown on the pitch? It helps us create an atmosphere.

It's not all about the atmosphere although the new Wembley certainly is dire. Turkey and Oz saw players playing for a place in the squad. Last night saw players trying to not get injured

    Agree.

I have to say, behind me there was a family that had no interest in the game, well apart from the dad. Young boy was more interested in running about after a punctured beach ball, the daughter was spent most of the match taking selfies, and the mum? Bloody hell....."why do they change ends" "oh look, the man in goal is that one of the head and shoulders advert" "why Isn't David (Beckham) playing- he's so handsome" I think with it being the holidays, and as with usual friendly games at Wembley it's a new experience for a lot of people and the atmosphere gets very flat - that as well as it being a pretty dull game and no goal until most people had gone home.

The key thing was, not getting injuries, not losing and playing against half decent opposition.

Yes they have to step it up by next Saturday, and yes there ate a few bits and pieces that beed working on, but you can't judge on friendlies. A month or so ago, people started creaming themselves over beating Germany away, when we don't do so well it's like the world has ended.

For me, people probably need to accept we're not good enough to challenge from the QF stages of a major tournament. That said, with some momentum, a bit of luck etc,etc we might surprise a few. And it really is our best chance since 2004.

I just hope the media don't start lauding us as champions after a 1-0 against Russia.

  • Not a good game by all accounts (I was otherwise engaged so missed it) but I do feel that there is a silver lining in that most of the England squad seem to want to actually play for their country now rather than give the impression that we should all bow and scrape in thanks as they have graced us with their presence in an international.

One hopes that perception of increased desire will transfer into improved playing performance and attainment.
