Big Laphroaig fan here ..funnily enough I find Talisker far too harsh on the palate

Laphroaig is slightly better than Talisker (meths is better than Talisker) but still way too smoky for my delicate palate. I'll stick to my sweet Dalmores - Christmas cake anyone?

I ll have some strong cheddar with that and a gaviscon chaser
  • I used to like the Skye and Islay stuff but not any more.
The Speyside stuff is my preference.
Has anybody else tried the Aldi (yes Aldi) single malt Glen Marnoch?
They do three single malts for £17.99 each, but the best one is their Speyside in the green container.

My brother picked this up for me the other day, just waiting for the storm to pass and he’ll send it over to me.
  • Just back from a trip to Speyside - including a trip to Planet Macallan. Unbelievable place - like walking onto the set of a Bond film!

My cousin who lives in a village in Scotland called Marnoch reckons Aldi named their single malt Glen Marnoch after this place. He believes most of their whisky is produced by the Glendrochan distillery which is not far away.
  • Back in September I tried Aldi’s offering, you’re welcome ! it wasn’t that great and didn’t linger on the palate).
Now, once again, so that you don’t have to, I am going to try Lidl’s offering. Same price as Aldi’s at €14.99.
I’ll let you know if I go blind on one
    eye, or not ! 😬🤪

    "Ben Bracken"?! Lol.

I'm sure I saw him playing up front for Elgin City last week!

Is it its natural colour I wonder?!

  • Just read this review online 🤣;

It's absolutely vile. I might dampen an old rag with it to wipe dog shit off my shoe though 🤔.  Obviously I'd wear disposable gloves, I wouldn't want any ben bracken on my hand.
  •  Ben Bracken single malt whiskies are  created for Lidl  by Whyte & Mckay allegedly.
Btw the distillery near Marnoch is Glendronach.
  • Anyone else tried whisky52? Not necessarily the best value at £35 for 1 35cl bottle a month, but thought I’d give it a go for a few months and I’ve been pretty impressed so far, they seem to be showcasing smaller distilleries so they’ve all been pretty unique.
  • Have this on the way over from Colorado, I hope it’s as good as the yanks last offering, which was wonderful.
  • Woodford Reserve is definitely my Bourbon of choice, and is only £25 in Asda for a 750ml bottle.

We're v lucky in this country re: alcohol prices. Bourbon here is cheaper than it is in Canada, and on par with the prices in Walmart USA. It seems to be the only thing here that isn't screwed over by taxes.
  • ill take a Blanctons over a Woodford personally and they’re very similarly priced here.

Bourbon isn’t popular at all in China so can get some great deals.
  • Just bought these - couple of absolute peat monsters! Really good bang for your buck, and I can heartily recommend both to @bobmunro!

  • Bushmills have released a 46 year old, Secrets Of The River Bush, which is a record age for an Irish Single Malt.
  • I bought a Bushmills Steamship whiskey at the airport last time I flew. No age but kept in Madeirs casks and a pleasure for the mouth. Which seems to be the general agreement as the bottle went in a fun afternoon at a mates barbecue last weekend.

    I'll pass ;-)
  • So, after having tried and been disappointed by the offerings of Lidl and Aldi I have decided to go back to my own stock and am just about to open this bottle.
  • Nice one @Stuart_the_Red - let us know what that's like.

We're thinking of maybe going to Arran on our next whisky trip, then get the ferry across to Campbelltown. Apparently the beach where they filmed the Mull Of Kintyre video is between the ferry and Campbelltown, so we may even stop there and belt out a chorus or two of Valley Floyd Road!
  • Sounds like a good trip @Off_it!
