Good thread! Shall definitely check out a few bands listed thus far!
So many great 'lost' & largely unheard of bands out there, I could put so many.
Here are a few in some sort of categorization (though I'm not a fan of pigeon-holing bands/artists)
For those that like expansive, widescreen, prog-esque rock:
Oceansize (UK - No longer in existence) Karnivool (AUS - Active) Shiner (US - Sporadically active) Dredg (US - Active) Cave In (US - Active) Victory Red (UK - No longer in existence) Failure (US - Active)
Indie Rock:
Rialto (UK - No longer in existence) Minus The Bear (US - Active) Blackmail (GER - Active) Jawbox (US - No longer in existence) The Life & Times (US - Active) 12 Rods (US - No longer in existence) Lomax (UK - Paul Epworths early band - No longer in existence) Swervedriver (UK - Active) Mutemath (US - active) Six.By Seven (UK - Active) The Afghan Whigs (US - Active)
Electronically based/Infused:
Soulwax (BEL - Active - Also as 2Many DJ's) Sneaker Pimps (UK - No longer in existence) TheStart (US - On hiatus) The Notwist (GER - Still Active) Curve (UK - No longer in existence) Lamb (UK - Active)
Heavy/Heavier shit:
Kyuss (US - No longer in existence) Helmet (US - Active) Sikth (UK - Active) Earthtone-9 (UK - Active) Filter (US - Active) Soilwork (SWE - Active) Opeth (SWE - Active - could also go into prig category) Machine Head (US - Active) Senser (UK - Active - also have electronic tendencies)
Grunge/Grunge-ish
Injected (US - No longer in existence) Talk Show (US - Stone Temple Pilots spin off - No longer in existence) Local H (US - Active) Paw (US - No longer in existence) Kerbdog (EIRE - Sporadically active)
I would say Opeth and Machine Head are fairly well known bands. Compared to the others you have listed anyway.
Ah it's incredible. Picked it up on vinyl last weekend and hasn't been off the turntable since. All 3 albums are so completely different but also completely the same!
Going to live gigs is a real passion of mine. There are so many great live bands out there that need exposure. Find your nearest local venues and use them!
Really annoys me that people stay in and watch X Factor on a Saturday night. Get out and see real, talented musicians live!
Get yourself to Brixton O2 academy Nov 6th to see Zemfira. She is a Russian artist who is as big in the 'Soviet' world as Madonna is in the West. She does sing in Russian it's true. But the music is great.
I do have a vested interest, my son is in the band.
Blimey, how did that happen?
How would you categorise her music? Mainstream, or something a bit different?
He voted 'remain' ...................
He's been a professional bassist/guitarist for about five years. He has worked with several fairly well known female singers. Zemfira particularly wanted an English band and he was asked to join. She toured the former 'Soviet' world at the beginning of this year and is now touring Europe and America.
I would say her music is 'rock' but not heavy. As far as I can tell it is mostly passionate stories in song. But my Russian is non existent.
Here's a link to a concert they played in Moscow. It's two hours long !!! But a few minutes will give the gist.

It's the perfect time of year for Bon Iver records as well. The days are getting shorter and it's starting to get colder.

I had debated whether to include them, but thought that maybe they aren't too mainstream to include, if someone new/newish to metal was looking for good bands to check out.
I'm happy to scratch them for Khoma & Cult Of Luna instead! :-)
These guys are big in the jazz/neo-soul/funk/fusion worlds - and imo are all pretty accessible. While big in their respective circles, I don't think CL would know any of them that well, so:
Snarky Puppy - Gone Under, feat. Shayna Steele which is one of their Family Dinner collaborations. For some pure Snarky, here is What About Me? from We Like It Here. They are whatever you want them to be - rock, jazz, funk, soul, RnB, whatever. Absolute big dogs.
Hiatus Kaiyote - who encompass neo-soul/future soul/RNB/jazz-funk/everything and sound very cool. This is Shaolin Monk Motherfunk from Choose Your Weapon.
Jacob Collier - he is the "boy wonder" of the jazz world, and performed at the Quincy Jones Prom this year. He can sing, play anything, and has an incredible knowledge of music theory and creates absolutely immense stuff - all by himself. Here is his arrangement of Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing by Stevie Wonder.
Tower of Power - super funky funk band. Possibly one of the best horn sections to have graced this planet. So much oomph. I have one question for you: WHAT IS HIP?
And there's much more. If you like this sort of stuff let me know and I can recommend even more!
(Edited for formatting)
Boss post. David Garibaldi of Tower of Power is one the great groove drummers.
I'll add The Breakestra (not a going concern anymore; don't know how big they were over here). Fantastic groove and break drumming by Josh Cohen:
Last night we went to see Keston Cobblers at Union Chapel. They've been around seven years at least but I'd never heard of them until a few months ago. Fine musicians playing a rock/folk fusion (better than it sounds, honest).
