Stoneman is strictly an opener and Jennings is getting another chance, as Canters just said, although really there's probably no reason why Stoneman couldn't bat at 5
I'll be very frustrated if they move Bairstow to 7.
As I said above Root Bairstow and Stokes is the backbone of our middle order and will be for years to come. Put then in their best positions and find the best players to work around them.
Bairstow and Stokes should both be at 6, but failing that I'm not too distressed by one of them batting at either 5 or 7
To a certain extent. But Bairstow is our second best batsman we want to put him in the position where we can get them most from him. Long term I see him batting 5 but not keeping...
If Foakes is the future, then he'll bat 7 and Bairstow 5 I guess
He may be. I'm not certain he is. But my point is we should build the side around those who are good enough to be there and are our beat players. We should not move them around to fit others in.
I stopped watching women's cricket a couple of years ago because I thought it was a bit meh. But i have to say the quality of the women's game has improved considerably and I watch it a lot now.
weird reading this thread late at night - 2 separate topics going on at once. One about the new selection for the Oval test next week & the other about the India/Australia womens game. Couldn't make out whether stoneman should be opening the batting for the Aussies womens team or whether Kaur should be playing at the Oval next week.
I think that the reason Stoneman wasn't picked is because he is left handed and they want to break that up with Westley at three.
Spot on mate, I think it was a choice between Jennings and Stoneman, and quite rightly they have given Jennings another go.
Good idea to get Westley in the side, as he has consistently made runs for the Lions, and if you are not going to pick people on the basis of that, then there is little point in that side existing.
Batting order should be: Cook, Jennings, Westley, Root, Bairstow, Malan, Stokes, Ali, Roland-Jones, Broad, Anderson.
Would give TRJ a go at the Oval, as it looks like Wood is struggling with his heel, and he deserves a crack.
Yeah agree with Kenny's side above. Top 8 on paper looks like it should get runs, although there's 2 debutants and a struggling Jennings.
I think they are probably just right to give Jennings the series. I would probably have replaced him with Stoneman and had Westley/Malan at 3, with Ballance at 5 and dropped Dawson. The injury to Ballance would have meant 3 new batsman in the squad and they were never going to take that risk.
To balance this out a bit, whilst I agree about KP's arrogance, you also cannot disagree that he was an incredible batting talent , and genius's like that in all forms of life generally come with a flaw of some sort. I must admit , he provided me with probably the most astonishing batting display i have ever seen ,in 2005 at The Oval with his 176 when we were in trouble - it was an incredible innings considering the importance of that day against a fantastically talented team. Even more so than Stokes's 200 at Cape Town which was just a slogathon in a (relatively) unimportant game. Even today, when I watch the highlights of that Test on Sky, it gives me tingles.
He scored 158 in that match not 176, I thought you would have known that, I do because in the words of Max Boyce, I was there. I'll give you a chance to redeem yourself; do you know the significance, in historical cricketing terms, of KP scoring 158 at The Oval?
Anyone watching the ladies in the final? I'm tracking the score and we just finished our innings 228-7. Only one other team tallied a higher batting first total (aus in 2009). India are defo up for this!
I'm struggling to keep up with everything today though - women's cricket, the Open, we've got women's football later but can't turn off police academy 3 on Itv4 at the mo!!

Oh to be a fly in the room in the selectors meeting.
And that Dawson and Wood are still in the squad

Best batting display by a woman I've seen that's for sure.
England's partnership against SA (in the group stages) wasn't bad either
But i have to say the quality of the women's game has improved considerably and I watch it a lot now.
