And then I realized… like I was shot… like I was shot with a diamond… a diamond bullet right through my forehead. And I thought: My God… the genius of that. The genius. The will to do that. Perfect, genuine, complete, crystalline, pure. And then I realized they were stronger than we. Because they could stand that these were not monsters. These were men… trained cadres. These men who fought with their hearts, who had families, who had children, who were filled with love… but they had the strength… the strength… to do that. If I had ten divisions of those men our troubles here would be over very quickly. You have to have men who are moral… and at the same time who are able to utilize their primordial instincts to kill without feeling… without passion… without hope… without hope. Because it’s hope that defeats us.”
Strangely moving. How does it relate to this thread? Is it all about hope or do you want to kill Roland.

I was butchering Colonel Kurtz's monologue in Apocolypse Now. It seemed an apt summary of where I and all followers of this thread had got to in regards to our mental health. The thread title's editor comment of "descent into madness" awoke me to the similarity.
Re KiwiValley - I am a Kiwi (NZer) who had the misfortune of living in Greenwich at a time when Charlton were flying high in the Premiership. I made the biggest mistake of my life in deciding to support Charlton and i have stuck with them through thin and thin ever since.

The thread starter seems to have edited his 11 month old opening post yesterday. Has anyone saved his wise words from this opening post or is this similar to a Meire internet cleaning up exercise? Probably all part of his exit plan.
As a precaution against disappointment, I am in the process of packing the swimming trunks and goggles, and making ready the the car to drive through the snow down to the sea to the nearest pier. Whereupon hearing that the “imminence” we all crave is, in fact, imminence relative to the collapse of the universe, I shall dive off said pier and go for a bracing, invigorating doggy paddle for 30 laps round the bay. If there is good news, I shall simple parade around the pier in my shorts and goggles, until I am arrested. Tally ho.

Well Henry was promising us it would be announced at Bromley Addicks. They have just cancelled their meeting due to snow. I blame Bromley Addicks and am preparing the pitch forks.
