I’ve mixed up my runs with running and run walk run, and I’m not fully convinced it helps me.If it stays hot though I think I might do 40 mins run then have a 2 min walk and take a gel, and then repeat again. One thing I’ve learnt is I need to stop running and walk before I get too tired, as I then find it impossible to get back to running after. My main thing is my heart rate goes through the roof. Near enough all my run is in the red zone and as I’m overweight, that’s always a constant concern on my mind. Slowly does it!1

Just slow it down. Times go out of the window when the conditions get too hot. More a case of looking after yourself and crossing the finish line. You'll get the same medal either way!4

I used to have this. A proper warm up solved it for me. If I ran from cold straight into race pace or went out too hard, it would always go up then I'd struggle to get it down again (no, Dave Mehmet, not that!)AFKABartram said:My main thing is my heart rate goes through the roof. When I used to run with my club or go and do a timed event, I'd always there early and do a proper warm up. A very gentle jog for 15-20 mins, followed by a gentle stretch. I used to have a HR alert set on my watch, so if I went into zone 3, it would immediately bleep and I could back off. I'd always do the warm up in Zone 2. (Bare in mind I had my MaxHR measured under lab conditions at work so I knew what it was accurately rather than rely on the 220-age estimate!)
I always found I could run my long runs in Z2/Z3 after that.
The guys at the run club always told us to run the first 1-1.5 miles slower than your planned pace. Give your body the time to adapt and then put the hammer down once you've eased yourself in. If you combine that with a warm up, you'll feel better.
(Obviously running the first miles slowly doesn't apply to Park Run. Just do your warm up and then hammer down on the start!)

My stepson has got his place for next years comrades, he is really happy as its the 100th anniversary. He'll be doing back to back ones as he ran it last year. Thankfully this year its down hill.2

Good luck all the fellow big half folks. I am not great in the heat either but fortunately I am in an early wave so should get round before it gets too hot.
agree that when the temperature rises it is best to just slow down and adjust your pace accordingly.1 -

That’s me done in terms of prep. 12 on Sat, 7 yesterday. 4 today. Two days rest now then away we go.Done about 140k over last 6 weeks and don’t realistically think I could do more.Good luck all.8

…. and today started so well with Mrs Hex and me both registering best ever age grade scores from 243 and 194 parkruns respectively.4

Got round the big half in 1.49.03
that was unpleasantly warm for the second half and I really struggled From 9 miles. Think I need to actively avoid anything above 10k between June and the end of September.5 -
01:44:35 for me on the Big Half. Wasn't expecting anything like that time as had no real plan of how I was to run it today. Just felt good so kept it going. Glad I got out in one of the earlier waves as still a lot of shade around big parts of the course.5

Well done lads, those are fantastic times. I was later out and much slower. Would be nice not doing it in midday sun.I was going ok but my tank just emptied between 8-9 miles and frustratingly had to walk run the rest. The long curling bit from Rotherhithe to Surrey Keys down Salter Rd where there is little support and no shade just does me.Was really down on myself last year after a similar attempt. Was only 5-6 mins better this year but I come away with a much different attitude. I’m a 50+ overweight ex smoker and not a natural athlete, so I’m proud of myself for pushing myself a bit and keeping going. It’s a brilliant event (would be even better without the Limehouse Link tunnel sweat box). The crowd and volunteers are simply amazing.12

Bloke down my road did it in 1:14. He was finished before I’d even started!0

Don’t beat yourself up. The very fact you are out and running at 50+ puts you above probably 90% or more of your age groupsAFKABartram said:Well done lads, those are fantastic times. couple that with improving by 30s per mile on last year you are doing even better.I find older runners do this a lot and should be judging themselves against those of a similar age not just on raw running performance.3 -
Hyrox Athens completed yesterday, fortunately my start time was at Charlton kickoff. Not sure which poison was worse. 1hour33 finish. 8k of running in 42mins was well chuffed considering my legs were in bits after station 4/8 (burpee broad jumps).5

Very impressive @Andyessgee901

How did it go for you @DoctorCharlton ?0

Well done gents! @AFKABartram @palarsehater
Was a tough gig that, out in wave 10 and suffered from the heat really bad. I ran/walk/ran after 16km but got it done. Was targeting 2:15 but happy with 2:30.
Was the hardest but most enjoyable thing I've done, already registered for next year.5 -
Well done mate1

I’ve also been convinced by a friend to run the Silverstone Half in November…. Anybody done that?0
-
Depends whether the fact you're running around Silverstone distracts you from doing three and a bit "laps". I've heard from some of my community that it's good for a PB but pretty souless (one you've taken in the surroundings etc).DoctorCharlton said:I’ve also been convinced by a friend to run the Silverstone Half in November…. lower back pain for a couple of days and legs were v tight, but have subsided today am on the runna app so into a recovery plan starting from Friday with my next run scheduled in Tarmonbarry Ireland of 8km ( strange distance ).
the plan is after to carry on with some runs, looking at a 10k in feb/early march or potential half marathon.
have saucony 10k booked for july
and have got the big half booked again for next year with an aim of getting a sub 2.

I agree with what JohnBoy said above. A warm up will really help you as your body doesnt know its suddenly going to be thrown into zone 5 heartrate for 40 minutes. An add on to a warm up is to spike your heartrate with short bursts and then let it recover inbetween. Warm up your muscles a bit with a comically slow run or even fast walking. Do some active stretches. Run 80m quite fast, then stop, recover your heart rate. Repeat 3 or 4 times.AFKABartram said:
I've used the "comically slow" run as a description for my g/f to aim for at Parkrun as she would do not much cardio for a week or two and then boom, Z5 for 40 minutes and then 3 days to recover. I set an alert on her watch when her heart rate goes up too high and she walks to recover, its much better for her.0 -
Cheers Arthur, yes i do warm up before hand. I suspect the reader on my watch is measuring it incorrectly. Seems unlikely I could do a half marathon with 96% in Z5. Will look further into cheers 👍1
-
Good luck @PalaceHater that’s some target a 24% time improvement in a year0

I did the Dingle marathon on Saturday. Anyone looking for a marathon with epic scenery, this is the one for you. My thirteenth marathon and probably my favourite so far. Came seventh in my age category and 54th overall.6

Amazing, well done mate. You still like a regular cuff or you had a lifestyle change?1

Could be cadence lock with the watch? https://runningwritings.com/2021/05/cadence-lock-why-gps-watches-have-hard.htmlAFKABartram said:Cheers Arthur, yes i do warm up before hand.
