  • @InspectorSands I’ve looked at the route map and can’t work out how it’s going to work with the fence that runs through the middle of the park along the path. What’s the plan?

btw Sutcliffe Park has had higher numbers than Avery Hill two weeks in a row now. I look down the results and can see that one has taken large numbers from Avery Hill. Will be interesting if that continues over time.
Thats the section that has an opening out on to the fields either side of that path
Looks a narrow fence gap between the bins to have a couple of hundred potentially filtering through on the first lap

  • Yeah it certainly has the potential to slow people down.

Apparently the council is meant to be widening the gap in the fence.  Haven't been up to check, but they seem to be leaving it a bit fine.

I've just asked the event director, the council say they have no budget to open up the gap and want parkrun to pay for it. This is mad, because it will become a bottleneck. But there you go.

Apparently Sutcliffe was boosted by a load of people from the cancelled Danson/Bexley run piling down to see what the fuss is about. Suspect parkrun obsessives will be coming down to Sutcliffe to tick it off in large numbers over the coming weeks but it'll settle down. Heard they were expecting a regular attendance of 75-100 but suspect they'll double that.

Managed 1.8 miles this weekend... That may not sound much, but is the green shoots of recovery from achilles tendonitis.
Way to go Dazzler. Listen to your body and take it slowly. I had the same for years. Mismanaged by physios who insisted heel raises and orthotics were the answer. Absolute quacks. Cost me years of run time! Good luck!

What was the answer out of interest as I get this from time to time?
  • I'm also interested to know. A lot of what I've done to ease it has been around loosening the hamstrings and calfs and a lot of massage of the tendon with ice (to numb the sensitivity)

Was all about technique for me. I went minimalist.

Had years of that and none of it worked. Do you know the cause? Mine was heel-striking. Got wrongly attributed to over-pronation. When I stopped heel-striking, everything changed.

Yeah I'm a midfoot striker that becomes a heel striker as I tire, my latest edition of my runners increased the weight by quite a bit. I expect that may be pat of what brought this about too as legs felt like they were tiring sooner. Also additional lockdown weight gained won't have helped.

Definitely considering a slow and steady move to minimalist still.

  • A stonking 331 at the first Charlton parkrun today. Went very well without being overwhelmed, given the numbers.
How was the moody bit between the fences?

A couple of hairy moments but largely worked okay. But it does need sorting - in particular there are conflicts when faster runners try to overtake slower runners there. I was the marshal there so took some photos and videos.

The council wanted the volunteers who run it to pay £1,800 to get it widened. One of the local councillors is on the case to drum some sense into his colleagues at the town hall. If they don't, I'll guarantee a torrent of shit publicity for them, so hopefully they will get it sorted.
  • Well done guys.  I did the Lands End Park Run with 37 other hardy souls on a wet and windy morning. Seemed to be mainly folk visiting the area. Nearly out numbered by volunteers.  Would recommend it to anybody spending time in the area .  Spectacular views but don't expect to run PBs.

Blimey, I didn't realise that was a thing! I went to Lands End last year and couldn't see a thing because of the fog!

Good work, though, sounds like quite an experience.

That’s a fair jog home afterwards, I struggled from Avery Hill!

Just over 250 at Charlton on Saturday - I was tail walking - and someone did a writeup here: http://www.blog7t.com/2021/10/charlton-parkrun.html

  • Did my 50th Saturday, was hoping for anything under 36 minutes and did it in 33.31!!! Didn't think I'd make it when checking my watch towards the end so really pushed and was well chuffed at the finished, turns out I'm a really bad judge of distance as I'd definitely had still got under 36 if I'd not pushed at the end.
Took a week off last week which helped I think, so I'll keep doing 4 weeks on and a week off.
  • Was another tourist today, another awful time, still proud to have got up early enough. Actually enjoyed the minor drenching as I cycled home….
  • Today was my 50th, was on 47 when Covid kicked in so taken a while to get there.

My 1st was in Aug 2018, what proved my slowest with a time of 29 something.  My peak period was in 2019 when I was consistently running in the 23s. I still run 2-3 times a week yet not been able to break 28 since the post-Covid restart. It’s frustrating npt being able to run like I was just 20 months ago and being realistic I don’t think I’m ever going to whack 4-5 mins off again, but I still love it none the less.

if you’ve never done Parkrun, I really can’t recommend it enough. It really is a community event for everyone, whether you sprint round 17 mins or walk round in 50. It encourages you to want to be fitter and healthier, and at times over those 3 years I’ve found it has done wonders for my mental health. There really is no better way to start your weekend. And it’s free.

    Congratulations! You’ve earned that 50 t-shirt…

Went over to Danson Park today for Bexley parkrun - lovely crowd there. Good to see Joe, the 89-year-old guy who marshals at the same spot every week. Over 300 there.

Charlton parkrun had 250 again today too.

    And if you’re near Swanley… https://www.parkrun.org.uk/swanley/

  • Endorse everything AFKA says about Parkrun and congratulations on achieving 50! Was my 10th today and have got 29 mins down to under 25 for the past three weeks. If an old boy like me can do it I have no doubt you can too! The important thing though is the enjoyment, being part of a positive community event and the burst of mental wellbeing ahead of the inevitable stresses of a Saturday afternoon!

    Congrats!!

If you were running 23s a year after starting with a 29 you can definitely get back to that point.

Agree with your comments about Parkrun.  I love the idea that armed with your barcode you can be pretty much anywhere in the UK (and beyond) and there's a run at 9am on Saturday close by.
  • Need to get back into the parkrun habit, only done one since lockdown, but 50 is in touching distance
  • Swanley Park test run is this morning at 9am if anyone is interested.  Start and Finish are near the top car park.
  • anyone do the first Swanley run today? 159 there which seems very decent.

Got my first sub-35 since the Before Times at Charlton today - 208 there.
