  • On route to take my eldest to football, saw three charlton fans out running.

First one by the George staples geeza running with the 80s ski hat on, second one don’t know his name but recognise from away games in a yellow jacket by the oval, third one by sidcup Queen Mary’s with a 06/07 training top on, up the addicks runners!
Not wearing a Charlton top but have just finished my run around those areas too so should have been 4!
  • And there were another batch at Avery Hill this morning.

Good to see @ThreadKiller and @les_says

I’m sitting on the sofa in my running kit trying to summon up the will to leave the house. I did my knee in two years ago (meniscus), before the first lockdown, and haven’t run since. I've put on 4 or 5 kg despite walking 10 K a day for a few months and going on the occasional (shortish) bike ride.
Hoping the knee holds out, so I’m going to take it easy (don’t think I’ve got much choice in that). I’m 65 now and I get the feeling if I don’t get active again soon, I’ll never do it.
    So here goes...

Update: Survived! Everything hurt like hell at first, but managed a very slow 4.14kms (in 38 mins).
Much better than I was expecting, but was doing 5k in 28.50 back in Dec 2019, so a long way to go to get anywhere near that sort of a time. I doubt if I'll even try if I'm honest. Just want to get fitter, lose some weight, and to keep the body in reasonably functioning order while I still can.

PBs for 1K, 1 mile and 2 mile before I completely ran out of steam and limped home. Just started way too quick.
Was hoping to break 25 minutes for the first time but ended up a minute and half on the wrong side and just outside my best ParkRun
Happy to have a little chat with @af@AFKABartram after

For a bit of the change I did the Lee Valley Velopark half today. Can't say I overly enjoyed it given its 13 laps of a 1 mile course. Means you know when the inclines are coming plus there was one section that was a couple hundred yards long into a pretty strong headwind! The worst bit was being lapped 4 times by one loon! Still, I managed a new PB by almost 2 minutes so not all bad!
  • Back running after an adductor went last year. Decided to have a go at a bit of Parkrun  tourism and really enjoying it so far.

Did Bethlem last week (the old Bedlam hospital) and Nonsuch Park this morning.

Bethlem is one of the smallest  in terms of the number of runners. They were getting 100 or so before lockdown but struggle to get to 70 at the moment. It's run by the NHS staff onsite and is well worth doing as they give you a bit of history about the place on the walk from the car park to the start.

Nonsuch had the 10th biggest attendance in the country before lockdown and there were around 600 runners this morning I think. Really well run and a nice flat course, so I was able to get a new PB at last!

  • Charlton parkrun this morning - rubbish time but got round. Good to see the numbers growing at the local parkruns again too. It’s all good.
  • As for my running, got my fastest 5k for 6 years I think it is, tip, change your running regularly!

Mate that's rapid !. Yeah I've been told to aim to do :5k  slow, 5k fast and a 'long one' each week to.see progress amd it does seem to be working.
  • I'm running the Cambridge Half, in March in honour of both my nans and for Mcmillan. Been a bit late setting up a page this time round, but of anyone can spare a £1 or 2 it'd be very much appreciated!

Cheers pal, for anyone who does plateau, as I mentioned, change it up and do something different then go back to your 5k/10k you’ll be surprised to see it’s not just about repeating the same exercise over and over again to get better.

I had a few weeks off once and did spin classes and played football twice a week, my running improved, get different muscles in your legs working.

  • 14 seconds away from my best since covid started….but then get the official result and they’ve somehow taken around 5-minutes off my time, which would be nigh on a proper PB but I scroll through everyone’s results and can’t see how/where this can have happened?
I can’t have gotten that much quicker all of a sudden and I can’t see how my watch could get it wrong 😬
Suppose I’ll just take it and bask in the undeserved glory….
  • Over the river to Beckton parkrun this morning (cycling there via the route of Victoria Dock parkrun). Just 62 runners, very friendly atmosphere - ground's very uneven, though, am aching!
  • Run around / over three smashed beer bottles in different places this morning. Then towards end of run past a bloke in opposite direction running barefoot.

    Absolute lunatic
  • There was a fella running for Sittingbourne Striders in the KFL Cross Country, running barefoot, every race in every season. No idea how they manage to do it.  I cant even walk across a peblbled beach without footwear!

The risk is probably lower than you'd expect. You tend to look where you're treading a bit more.
  • Big numbers at Finsbury Park this morning with so many park runs nearby cancelled. Crisp sunny morning, colourful runners strung out halfway round the park and a decent time for me as well. Couple of hours break before setting off for my first home match of the season, I hear we’ve been playing really well
  • I should’ve looked into another I guess, when I saw Richmond, Wimbledon and Clapham had all cancelled because of bad weather the day before I just rolled over and went back to sleep
  • Real battle trying to get my fitness back after 5 months not running, having to slowly build back up like I'm a beginner again, hopefully I'll be able to put something that looks like a long run together in the next week, but so frustrating getting back there.

Good luck mate, don’t push yourself too much, try and keep it regular and it will soon kick back in.

I’m struggling with the keep it regular bit so am forever going back to step one

On the days you’re not running try and get some long walks in, a good way to get the muscle memory in your legs back.  And it’ll help with the recovery.

  • Gorgeous morning for it, but still a shocking time…oh well, onwards and upwards
  • I ran Chalkwell Beach Parkrun this morning, lovely weather for it 🌞

Any good Junior Parkruns round SE London and NW Kent? Son's school running club is off this Thursday due to World Book Day (and means a race to the chargers at 9 for me instead of relaxing and early), and he'll want something else to do instead. I know there is one in Gravesend, but is there one at Danson or in Sidcup?

Pretty sure there’s one at Eltham Park South on Sundays but not sure how well it’s attended nor whether it’s considered a good one.
  • I've read varying reviews on them, some are better than others in terms of set up etc. Eltham seems doable
  • Eltham Park South and Dartford are your best local options I think. Lessness Abbey and Gravesend also run then, but only about 20 tops at those
  • sweet, Dartford it might be

Anyone doing the Dartford Half Marathon on Sunday? I've done Gore Road a few times recently so it hopefully feels 'normal' climbing it after 10 miles on Sunday.

I'll be running it on Sunday for the first time. Have had look at the Gore Road bit on Strava and it looks a right bastard! Cant say i'm looking forward to that part!

Cool, come say hi if you see someone in a red Charlton training shirt. Yeah it's the timing of it as much as it is the size, apparently a lot of people walk the top to save energy. It's downhill from there to Dartford at least.

You got a time you're aiming for? I think there's 650-ish feet of climbing, so not the best for PBs but the early weather forecast looks nice and warm.
