Apart from Cook the top six have all got in which bodes well for the rest of the series. Would like to have seen us get after Lyon earlier on because we've allowed him to bowl a long spell and as a consequence to give their quickies long rests.

Which, (not having seen any play), also might mean that its a decent pitch where the Oz batsmen will also flourish. If we get Smith and Warner out cheaply then i'll be happy.
First session tomorrow will be huge - especially as they have taken the new ball - be a bit like starting an innings again, and we have 2 batsmen in who have spent most of their career opening for their counties.
i would have taken that at the start of play, shame root went as 200-3 would have been a cracking effort. Moeen is going to have a big part to play with the ball by the looks of what Lyon has got out of the surface
The disappointing thing is that the dismissals of Cook (caught behind pushing at one rather than leaving it or playing it under his eyes), Stoneman (taking an ill judged run when the pressure was on the Aussies) and Root (LBW falling over and trying to play a straight one to leg) could all have been avoided.
Think we all would have taken this score before play started simply because it sets the tone for the series. We have demonstrated that we can dig in and that we shouldn't fear the Aussie attack.
Lyon was bowling really well with the old one. The light was fading. And, after just two balls, the umpires took them off.
If he'd kept the old ball, they may have continued putting pressure on England for a few more overs. As it is, they don't have the option over night of the old ball, Jimmy gets a to take his pads off and England start again.
Whilst I have said that we should have got after Lyon, KP is talking absolute crap when he says that he would rather have seen his figures as 3-73 rather than 0-40 on the first day of a Test match. We'd probably be about 240-7 on the basis of that comment!

Rookie error. I hope it comes back to haunt him.
As was the review. Starc did not look at all convinced and bowlers are usually the first to demand one. Means that they only now have one left for the whole of the innings, albeit with "umpires call" on their side, meaning they can't afford to make another such mistake.
Tired from staying up until 2, now do i have a early night and set the alarm for 4 and watch from then or try and stay up again to watch first session tomorrow.

Have a kip before the pub opens. You are a landlord aren't you?

All in all, a good day for England but it might have been a great day for us
