  • Burns needs a season of consistent high scores but he is vying with Hameed for 'next opener' yes

    Meaker is cannon-fodder, sorry

Foakes could be given a go, sure

Curran S spent last season leaking a lot of runs and needs to develop a bit more

I mean, from 368-4, 400 kind of IS a disaster, but we've not been bowled out yet

we'll be lucky to get 400. I said this yesterday. England are like Charlton - never fail to let you down.

I'm off to bed at lunch. I expect The Aussies to get 500+ & have a lead of 150 or so.
Sorry, too pessimistic........to the Aussies !! I thought at least we would try. I can see them getting 650 -700 & then England having to survive 5 sessions - which aon't going to happen.

Don't fotget I also said that we were going to lose 3-0 this afternoon.
Would you kindly go back to bed and stay there.........I fank yew!
  • The good news is that the new ball is due in less than 10 overs (ducks for cover)
  • One wicket in a day's play. Takes some doing that.
  • 300 partnership...
  • One wicket in a day's play. Takes some doing that.

I think something simialar happened in the 1985 Ashes series. I'm sure we were 340-1 on the opening day for the 1st or 2nd test.

A season? He's had 3 doing just that. Far more consistent than Hameed.

And that english attitude towards quicks who leak a few runs but get wickets is part of the reason why we end up with accurate but average medium pace bowlers. Anyone with any threat gets it coached out of them in order to keep it tight. Starc has gone for more than 10 in an over plenty of times this series but the Aussies dont worry about it as he's a constant threat and will pick up wickets sooner or later which will slow the scoring.

We ruined Finn (and so many others) in the same way. Sure Meaker isn't a world beater, but he's the only genuine quick we have because the rest get it coached out of them.

I actually agree it's too early for Sam but I'd still be tempted to give him a game or 2 and see how he gets on.

Its a bit like football. Doesn't matter how many you conceed as long as you score more. In cricket the mist important thing is taking wickets If you cant take 10 wickets then you're going to lose - doesn't really matter if you're going at 4 an over as long as you can get the buggers out.
  • This isn't surprising. Our bowlers are so weak it's embarrassing. I hope we get stuffed 5-0 and that playing, coaching and administration heads roll.
  • Also, I'd just like to point out how much I hate it when the pessimists are right. Damn you all :P

1985 we were 370 odd for 3 on first day in 6th Test at the Oval. Gooch and Gower did the damage.
1989 series, openers Mark Taylor and Geoff Marsh (father of Mitch and Shaun) put on 301 on the first day at Trent Bridge.
  • Never helps when your head coach is lauging and patting the opposition on the back when they've just dished out a tonking, almost as if he was one of their own!

WTF does Bayliss know about Test cricket anyway? Or Farbrace?

'We think we've done pretty well today'
England coach Paul Farbrace on BT Sport.

    Seriously?

Just read Farbrace’s comments in John Lewis. Fuming in the parfumerie.
  • Surprised that we didn't lose a review for a no ball, silly rule.

Was hoping that Smith would run out of partners, I may have underestimated Mitchell Marsh somewhat!
  • Is it time we sent a European team to Australia like we had to do in the Ryder cup after being thrashed every time ?
There must be a Italian spinner, a BFG to bowl fast, or a Dutch batsman to take on the Aussies !

Received a Christmas card from an old colleague today.

In early 1979 we were working and staying in Barry (pre Gavin and Stacey) and had adjoining rooms. She recalled in the card listening to us win the Ashes on her transistor radio overnight and banging on the wall until I banged back to acknowledge the good news!

As she also said no chance of that this time!

As if the question needed asking if the England players body language was not good. We can all see it for ourselves ffs. Drop Cook and Broad and bring in Wood and Hales.

England's attack is full of decent medium paced bowlers. We have a decent attack in English conditions, but in Australia, bat friendly pitches where the ball is doing nothing , you need express pace bowlers & a decent spinner. England are seriously lacking on both counts.

We'd beat them in England, but until England unearth fast bowlers & a good spinner, they'll continue to beat us in Australia

Adjoining rooms Len? Was that the only banging???
  • Drop Broad and Anderson. Bring in Wood and Plunkett.

And we won't find them all the time we insist on playing County Championship matches in the main in April, May and September. Or batsmen, for that matter, capable of facing real pace.

Drop Broad and Anderson. Bring in Wood and Plunkett.

I’d wheel out Anderson as much as possible until we can no longer replace his creaking joints and limbs with mech in a thousand years or so. Given the correct conditions he’s the best bowler in the world. We need some one to replace him and put some genuine quicks around them.
  • Don't worry, we've got Ball and Ballance to come back in at the MCG...
  • At the time the squad was announced, the lack of Wood or Plunkett was questioned, but so was Mason Crane.

Crane seemed to be a pick for when England wanted to play 2 spinners, but people did ask the question what would happen if Moeen was injured? Now we have a situation where Moeen is struggling, and are England prepared to play Crane as the SOLE spinner, which also mean Woakes batting at 7?
  • Crane has to come in for one of the medium-pacers (i.e. Broad or Overton)
  • Am so glad Porter was injured and has missed this tour.
  • Get Plunkett Wood and Crane in for next two tests. Don’t rate Crane but let’s actually get a look at him in test conditions.
Have Burns and Hameed open for whole of 2018. Tell them place is not in jeopardy, this is test cricket, get the feel for it without looking over your shoulder.

Thank Anderson and Broad for what they have done for England through the years but tell them 2018 is the building block for next evolution of the team.

And hand the new ball to Darren Stevens....
