Neville just showed how it's done. She put a Liverpool player under pressure & forced a free kick and she's done more running than most out there ffs.2 -
Good crowd at The Valley today.
Fans will be important and we have to support the team and hope for the best.
Would like to see us have a bit more belief going forward. We lacked any real threat at all and the constant negative backwards passes means we will be in for a very tough season.
I thought Liverpool looked really good, much better physically and way more comfortable on the ball4 -
To be as realistic as possible the aim is probably the playoff but this will be a long old season0

Don’t think anyone can blame the manager when she’s been given next to no investment. We only have 3/4 WSL quality players - Whitehouse, Neville, Hutton, N’Dow maybe EvE then I struggle. Sadly Mason is a mile off the pace. Azzarro looked ropey but hopefully a lot more to come from her.Going to be a very long season.Lovely atmosphere in the crowd with plenty of families.8

Tough watch that. The reality has always been that if we see a single win this season it will be an achievement. The gulf between the two divisions is so massive it’s like a L1 team jumping up to the Premier League but without the prize money to get the right level of players in. You’re reliant entirely on what the owners are willing to invest and they’ve let the team down badly.We already knew that though, the hope was that we’d come away with a less damaging result today but it’s a very ominous start. Liverpool never really put that much effort in but they clobbered us anyway. Got the early goal, ran us about the place until the cracks appeared and then stuck a few more past us. We started today with 7 players who were in our team last season and we were never the best side on the pitch then. We were incredibly efficient and won a lot of games against the odds but this is a team that couldn’t beat Portsmouth or Ipswich and all we’d added today were a fairly exciting winger, an experienced full back and a couple of hardworking midfielders. I bet the midfield would do great on a bleep test but the calm and control was not there today. Flandog worked hard and looks like a player with potential considering she’s only 20 but Davidson may as well just have been warming up on the side of the pitch.By the time the subs came on we were just killing time. Maybe Robe and Cissoko can add some experience at the back but it’s not much use if the ball doesn’t go anywhere and we didn’t have many ideas outside of lumping it up and praying a Liverpool defender fell over. Which they did quite a lot actually but we didn’t even really read that. Hopefully we’ll get better at being what we are but it’s hard to escape the feeling that the owners have baulked at the idea of investing properly to support this team just like they did in January and the players, who I like a great deal, are going to really suffer through the season. It’s not been a great weekend.Also they’ve cancelled my train.10

Having probably watched more WSL since it began than most on this thread I can honestly say that Emma Hayes would struggle to be able to set up the Charlton women to garner points in this company.
Charlton women in WSL2 weren't big scorers, it was all about their defense. In the WSL they will find it difficult to keep teams out as well as trying to score.

This was my first Charlton Women's game, I bought a season ticket and to be honest apart from the score I enjoyed the experience. Decent crowd too. It's obviously going to be a tough season but we all knew that. Shame I can't make the next home game as I'll be in Cardiff watching the men. Best of luck for the season.5

The big thing we don't know is how good Liverpool are relative to the rest of the league. Staying up in the WSL always comes down to taking points off the bottom 4 or 5 and not getting disheartened if Chelsea score 6.2

You spent the entirety of last season saying that Hills would never get us promoted. Your stock is zero mate. Pointing out she’s not going to keep this team up when no-one on planet earth could isn’t going to change that. You are entitled to your opinion but what really disappointed me today was that we reverted to try to play down the wings with Fitzgerald and Partido up against defenders that were never likely to let them get into the penalty area. This was Karen's favoured tactic right through last season. Both got withdrawn so the coaches worked this out.Garrymanilow said:

Last Sunday Carla Humphrey scored a goal that was at the end of a flowing move down the middle. I hoped to see a team picked to make this happen again today.
With one more signing to be announced I would hope to see the experienced defensive players across the back and a much stronger midfield than we saw today for the Everton game.

Kayleigh Barton (at least I think it was her) was on co comms and said something interesting in the first half. She said that when she was at the club she felt certain players were more comfortable on the ball and trying to attack when we were 1-0 down than at 0-0. I think that showed in the first half today2

Not sure about that? We weren’t too phased by the early goal in the first half but once they scored again we didn’t really have any ideas1

It's worrying that we gave Liverpool a better game last season as a WSL2 team.
Playing Hutton up front is a great way to 1) wear her out and 2) get nothing like the best out of her. If Kenney and Boama are injured then obviously that's a big issue (it would be nice to know - the club's comms regarding women's team injuries have always been rubbish), but the answer isn't to put her up there with Davidson. I felt for them both, being asked to do jobs they didn't sign up for in multiple positions, and it meant we had almost no attacking threat at all. Mason's chance at the back post was the only dangerous moment we had, and otherwise Liverpool easily kept us at arm's length and took their chances clinically.
I don't think we need both van Egmond and Flannery in midfield, given how defensively minded they are. Fitzgerald had one great month for us back in February and works hard, but she's too slight and too slow on the ball to be any use in the WSL. Neville has been by some distance our best player so far, and I think we need to move her forward to get more out of her - maybe on the right of midfield, with Johnston (who looks pretty quick) behind her at right back? I'd like to see Humphrey more involved too, to inject a bit more creativity.
The crowd was good (bigger than at Palace and Spurs today, albeit boosted by lots of Liverpool fans). But without showing an ability to at least try and score, let alone win games, it's going to be hard to keep people coming to The Valley.3 -
Liverpool have strengthened considerably over the summer. So comparisons with last season’s cup match are a bit moot4

Not really sure why you tacked this on to a post from a person who comes on here exclusively to write negative things about Hills and nothing else, not a good look, but regardless Partido was the only player out there today who looked like she could create anything at all. Every decent moment we had in the first half was through her and it's no surprise that we got progressively worse when she went off. She came off on 55 minutes, just after Liverpool's second, and we went through another two shape changes after that and got worse and worse and worse. We were so bad in the 352 when we removed our wingers that we had to change shape again to a 442 with defensive midfielders out wide. We conceded twice more and created even less. Fitzgerald isn't anywhere near the level for the WSL, I agree with that, but what that means is we need a much better left winger and we'd better pray that there's a good free agent out there. We definitely could do with a better midfield as well but I don't think a goal we scored in a friendly against a recently promoted WSL2 team is going to be indicative of how the team will succeed in the top division.Crusty54 said:

we could not have achieved flowing movement through the middle , Liverpool would take the ball off us every time, in actually we need a female equivalent of Leaburn, playing Hutton as diminutive version does not work.Crusty54 said:

Each time she was able to run for a while she was stopped with nowhere to go. Fitzgerald didn't even get that far. She thinks she can run past opponents but can't.Garrymanilow said

Our passing was awful today. Trying to play out from the back was never going to work.1 -
What she did a couple of times was win us free kicks which led to our best chances of the game. Liverpool didn't really know how to stop her without bringing her down on the occasions we actually put the ball in front of her instead of crashing it in to her feet with her back to goal. She was our only outlet. I agree with you on Fitzgerald but she's out of her depth. She shouldn't be our only left winger but that's on the club for not bringing someone else in. When Not Millwall got promoted they released her, we've not only kept her, we've not even given her any competition. I'd rather see Hutton there and hopefully one of Azzaro or Boama can make the 9 role their ownCrusty54 said:
