How comes when you release a player his salary can still be dead cap space for the team that no longer has him ?
Because of the way NFL contracts work.
We have guaranteed Blake money through next year - i.e. he's gonna get paid $15m (or so, I think) in 2019 - and that therefore counts against the overall spending cap.
NFL contracts aren't guaranteed - I'm probably a bit off/basic in my explanation and I don't know how best to articulate. @NapaAddick is probably better placed to explain (I'd appreciate any explanation too!).
It was a mistake paying him at the time and a mistake to go into this year with him as starting QB. It's no secret I don't rate him at all but they may have wasted this Superbowl window. It's fine replacing him next year, but the Jags have still wasted money on him which means they can't build talent around any future QB.
Okay what's your definition of "paying"? Because at the time, he was a middling QB, and we accordingly paid him a middling starting QB's wage. The mistake was probably picking up his 5th-year option.
Yes, we put our eggs into the Bortles game manager basket, given the way we run our offense, and it's backfired horrendously. Here are a few problems that aren't Bortles:
- a shit receiving corps (injuries and just generally being shit given Marqise Lee was gonna be our WR1 ffs, tipped interceptions, dropped catches etc)
- no O-line (onto our 4th starting LT which is Ereck Flowers lol, our franchise left tackle in Cam Robinson tore his ACL, LG on IR, C on IR, right hand side has been a bit of a turnstile)
- barely any running backs which is bad for a run-first offense (Fournette with his hamstring, Corey Grant out with a Lisfranc injury which is gutting, Yeldon playing when not 100%, so on so forth)
- apparently anyone off the street can play tight end? I dunno who we have on the roster any more, but at least two are on IR
- sharp defensive regression, which isn't helped by Calais Campbell playing when unfit and a spell where we had a rookie UDFA lining up for a load of the snaps in London against the Eagles
So we were very lucky to be healthy last year and we're now mega unlucky with injuries. The quick 180 has led to locker room disquiet (look at the London arrests, shitshow vs the Bills etc) and now it's just complete shit.
Don't get me wrong. Bortles is not the QB you want in this situation. He's not very good and his ceiling is pretty low, but we weren't wrong to pay him.
Now we're stuck in a situation where either we pay him $21m next year, or cut him and have $16.5m in dead cap. I'd rather have him as a backup for the $4.5m effective assuming we draft a QB (which we probably won't).
It's rubbish at the moment, but it definitely wasn't a mistake to pay Bortles the salary we gave him relative to other QBs not on their rookie deal. Hindsight is 20/20.
He had a good run in the second of last year and ignored the previous 3-4 years evidence that he is not a starting level QB in the NFL. The reason he's surrounded by inadequate receivers etc is because you're tied down to paying him rather than having a QB on a rookie deal and putting better talent around him, see the Rams and Chiefs. It is a mistake, because now you're stuck with a huge cap hit when he's moved on this offseason and it damages your Supebowl window.
I know Cowherd's a marmite pundit but he's bang on the money about overpaying QB's.
That’s Kansas done, shame, that 4 man attack of Kelce, Hunt, Hill and Mahomes was special.
Kareem is a scumbag of the highest order though
What the hell is wrong with American sports stars. Absolutely disgusting behaviour.
Honestly people complain about footballers in England but these guys are just on another level.
Seems kinda dumb that Tyreek gets to play football though despite being an equally large scumbag, and the Chiefs know it too.
I missed that what did hill do? Or was he involved in this?
Domestic abuse case. He’s a very lucky boy to put it mildly.
Can’t hate the Chiefs though, they’ve sacrificed their chance at the SB to maintain some morality so I kinda respect that.
That’s not really true - they’ve known about this for months. The only thing that changed is that the video got out. They were quite happy to let him play despite this assault. The video forced their hand. That’s not morality, it’s hypocrisy.
Are we going to be seeing Hill and Mixon follow him out in the next 24 hrs then? Mixon is the only one on camera but both incidents seem worse than this one.
Should probably make clear that I’m not defending any of them, but if you apply the rule to one surely it applies to all. Especially on the exact same team.
Hunt lied to the Chiefs and with the video showing the truth they correctly released him. Another team will pick him up before next season begins, if not off waivers. Did Charlton release Bowyer after the Mcdonald's incident? No. When money is involved a team will always protect an investment as long as possible. Not saying that is right.
It will be harder for the Chiefs but we are not done. Ware isn't as good as Hunt but will be a solid replacement. We will probably pick up a free agent. Perhaps Jamaal Charles will get that last deserved shot at the Superbowl.

The reason the Chiefs released him now and not back then was he lied to them about what happened. Video in Feb was only ever seen by hotel and police. Both the Chiefs and the NFL tried to get the video but couldn’t. Chiefs spoke to Hunt and he told them his version of what happened. Video released proves Hunt lied, Chiefs cut him.

I am not defending Mixons actions but his incident was 2 years before he was drafted and therefore not an NFL player, with our track record of signing arseholes i don't think it would have mattered to Brown & co anyway

I get that, but surely what matters is the things someone has done rather than the timing of it? If this Hunt incident wasn’t on camera nobody would even care.
I think the elephant in the room on the NFL's domestic violence issues is performance enhancing drugs. Steroids have known effects on personality, such as depression and increased aggression. The NFL's drug testing regime is far less rigourous than the USADA's and with the generous notification periods fairly easy to circumvent if you're smart about it.

You can also add the effects of frequent concussive injuries on players mental health which often leads to 'erratic' behaviour. That said the upbringing of these players (and lets face it especially black players) is often horrific and their behaviour is a reflection of some pretty messed up childhoods.
Hill owned up and took responsibility for beating up the woman who is now his fiancee. I think there's a genuine level of rehabilitation there.
Hunt lied and that's what made it intolerable for the Chiefs. That's why he's now been released. We could play tu quoque with NFL players and their scumbaggery all day, but I can understand (if not excuse) what looks to be a double standard.
Watching my Broncos at Bengals. Brutal game in some ways with lots of injuries, but Bengals giving up so many penalties on offence and defence, false starts, blocks on backs etc. Its giving the second string QB no chance.
Lindsay once again dominating the run for the Broncos. This kid is nuts. Undafted, not even invited to the combine, and looking like a second round pick consistently.

Ware is an adequate backup for the Chiefs and was number one ahead of Hunt before he got injured at the start of last season.

This Giants side would be lost without him.
