Steam. First player marks of the season, weirdly. We were largely rubbish, but a lot of the high numbers are down to shear workrate and effort, especially in the last 15-20 minutes.

Phillips: 6.5 - A couple of very good saves. A couple of dodgy moments. Ultimately, not a whole lot to do. He's a great shot stopper, of that there can be no doubt. I just feel he has a mistake in him due to lapses in concentration, and it means we'll see Amos at some point. Still young for a keeper and has developed far better than I ever would have imagined nine months ago.

Oshilaja: 6 - not on long enough to make an impact. Get Matthews in.

Lockyer: 9 - Another who I feel has a bad mistake in him, but bugger me was he everywhere today. His recovery was excellent, even if he was sometimes recovering from his own mistakes, and I feel he's getting better at reading the game higher up the pitch.

Pearce: 9 MOTM - got in the way of everything. I do feel we play deeper with him in the side, and he's very poor on the ball, which often halts momentum building from the back. But in a backs to the wall situation, there's arguably no one you want in your side more.

Purrington: 6.5 - Did fine. Not a lot came down his side. Still not great in the air. Brilliant cross that Taylor just missed.

Pratley: 7 - Some important tackles and some bad decision making and positioning which basically sums up his time with us. Better at CB because he got sucked out of position at the base of the diamond.

Cullen: 7.5 - Quetly went about breaking up play and not giving away the ball.

Gallagher: 7.5 - Kept working despite clearly looking knackered after his first Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday as a senior pro. The two touches for the goal, followed by the finish. He's a class above.

Williams: 8 - Worked so hard and always looked like he would make something happen. When he first joined us I wasn't convinced he had that final ball in his locker. I was wrong.

Leko: 5.5 - Not his day, looked tired, will have a really battle on his hands just to get in the 18 with Hemed and Aneke fit.

Taylor: 6 - Worked hard but tired and generally struggled to make an impact. In that match you both saw why Brentford were willing to pay 4.5m for him, and why, had the bid come in sooner, I might have understood if we'd taken the money.

Lapslie: 8.5 - His positional lapses can be forgiven for the number of crucial tackles and headers he made. Jack of all trades, master of none, but he was a crucial part in the win today.

Hemed: 7.5 - I remember him battering the Championship a couple years ago with Brighton and you saw glimpses of that. When the ball goes up to him, it tends to stick. We desperately need that, as Leko isn't that type of player, Lyle prefers to lay it off or get it in space, Bonne is still raw, and Aneke prefers it to feet. But his marks obviously come for his excellent defensive work.

Referee: 4 - a very weird day and I didn't think he gave enough stoppage time in either half but I'm OK with that.

Field: n/a - a crucial header and a massive block to prevent a goal.

  • stream - fantastic team performance

Phillips: 6.5 - couple of dodgy moments, some weird decisions with passing, but some really important claims too
Oshilaja: 7 - did he play for 30 mins? thought he did well, though henry was a real handful
Lockyer: 8.5 - some really incredible defending - would be a mark higher if a couple of the last-ditch challenges weren't making up for his own errors!
Pearce: 8.5 - brilliant, probably MOM for me
Purrington: 6.5 - defended well, didn't have the opportunity to go forward as much as he sometimes does
Pratley: 7 - experience/calm was very useful when we needed to change shape
    Cullen: 7 - good battling
Gallagher: 8 - worked really hard, took his goal really well, helped us turn defence into attack a couple of times when we were really up against it
Williams: 8.5 - worked hard and created a lot on a tough afternoon for the team
Leko: 6 - lots didn't really come off for him, and he looked tired, but gave everything
Taylor: 7 - looked absolutely exhausted the last 15 minutes, but still put in a lot of effort defensively
Lapslie: 6.5 - really struggled defensively playing out of position against a really good wing back, but worked hard, and looked decent when he got on the ball
Hemed: 7 - a couple of clever passes in the flicks in the few moments we got forward in that half, but also put in an incredible shift defensively. looking forward to seeing him in a game where he has a bit more freedom up front.
Referee: 4 - some utterly bizarre moments from the officials tbh!

Phillips: 7.5 Kicking wonky and a hairy moment 1st half but two great saves 2nd half.
    Oshilaja: 6
Lockyer: 9.5 Absolutely superb. The timing of his tackles were amazing.
Pearce: 9.5 What a rock. Without him we lose that one. With him, we had a chance.
Purrington: 7 Did his bit under the cosh.
Pratley: 8 Old warhorse. So committed.
Cullen: 6 Chased shadows but at least he chased. Probably fucked from Weds.
Gallagher: 7 Chased shadows but at least he chased. Probably fucked from Weds. Beautiful finish....so calm.
Williams: 8 Our one bright attacking spark. Created the goal through effort and then vision. A Charlton legend in the making.
Leko: 4.5 Definitely fucked from Weds but tried to defend.
Taylor: 7 Nothing to work with but gave everything for the team.
Lapslie: 7.5 Stuck at it really well at wing back. Couple of good steals and some good headers. Well done.
Hemed: 6 Probably didn't expect to have to defend for 50 minutes. One wonderful tackle.
Referee:5 Allowed us to waste too much time and should've added about 8 mins not 4.

Field: n/a Did ok and closed down late on.

Phillips: 6 distribution was awful... but some crucial saves. Not his best game but first clean sheet.
Oshilaja: 6 looked knackered after Wednesday. I’m hoping it’s fatigue more than anything
Lockyer: 9 joint MOM with Pearce. Absolute rock at the back. Some crucial tackles.
Pearce: joint MOM. See Lockyer. Left everything on the pitch. Captains performance.
    Purrington: 7.5 done very well.
Pratley: 8.5 you can see why he’s been given a new contract. Slotted into a back 3 very nicely. His experience will get us points.
Cullen: 8 tgought he was superb. That engine that keeps everything moving.
Gallagher: 8 a lot of players his age would’ve fluffed that chance. Worked so hard
Williams: 7 looked knackered in the second half. Was 29 degrees. Played very well. Worked very hard.
Leko: 6 I thought he was poor... looked off the pace from the start but I still don’t think he’s fully fit.
Taylor: 7 looked tired but still worked reallly hard
Lapslie: 7.5 his work rate is why he’s consistently part of the match day squad. Slotted in at RB and struggled positionally, however got some crucial blocks and tackles in.
Hemed: 7.5 defensively very good. Linked up well with Taylor at the start of the second half. Worked hard
Referee: 5 odd decisions from start to finish. For both sides

Field: n/a came on late and out his body on the line.

Not a glamourous performance at all. First half we weren’t very good. Looked tired and it was by luck really that they hadn’t scored... but the work rate defensively and dedication alone is what makes us deserve the 3 points.
  • Phillips: 6 - Mixed afternoon with poor distribution / decision making but made up for it with two cracking saves
Oshilaja: 6 - Didnt really play long enough but was having another decent game
Lockyer: 9 (MOTM) - Another reliable signing; blocking and tackling everything in a black shirt!!
Pearce: 8 - Did really well coming back in after a break on Wednesday
Purrington: 7 - Worked hard out on the flank
Pratley: 8 - Another solid game, especially when he dropped into a back three
Cullen: 7 - Just couldnt get control of the game today
Gallagher: 8 - Gets a point for the goal, same as Cullen really
Williams: 8.5 - Was our best midfielder today, did a brilliant job for the assist
Leko: 5 - Terrible game but understandable when Bowyer said he was exhausted after Wednesday
Taylor: 7 - Did his best with zero reward today

Referee: 5 - Too eager to give Brentford free-kicks

Lapslie: 8 - Another one who played out of position, isnt ready for the Championship but would keep him around instead of JFC
Hemed: 6 - Started the half well but faded as we struggled to get a foot on the ball
Field: N/A - Came on, helped us keep a clean sheet, well done Sam!!

Phillips: 4. I spend a lot of time defending him against a couple of guys in my row who spend most of every game blindly berating him. But I thought he was awful today. A couple of routine saves but pathetic distribution and looked really shaky.

Oshilaja: 6.  Was doing ok before the injury.

Lockyer: 9.5. Agree with others who say he spent a lot of time fixing his own mistakes but you can’t argue with that today. Without him we’d have been handed our own arses. Immense. MOTM

Pearce: 9.  Warrior. Limited but excellent fight today.

Purrington: 7.  The usual Len Goodman for Ben.

Pratley: 8. Experience told. I’d prefer Field when we are trying to be the attacking force but when it’s backs to the wall it’s DP every time.

Cullen: 6.5. Not up to his usual standard but never gave up.

Gallagher: 7. Has a handy knack of scoring.

Williams: 7. Great skill. Final pass was a bit off but that may be others failing to read what he’s about to do.

Leko: 4. Useless today. But he’ll have days like this given the sort of player he is. Cut him some slack folks.

Taylor: 7. Bit of a curates egg egg performance. Ran his knackers off but often to no real effect.

Lapslie: 8. He’s not up to championship level. He’s be useless in an attacking team like Wednesday first half. But when you need a
Duracell bunny to run and Harry for you then George is your man. 8 marks, 7 of them for sheer effort.

Hemed: 6. Started well but faded. Clearly has quality. Look forward to him bedding in.

Referee: 7 thought he was pretty much ok.

Phillips: 6.5 - Distribution awful but a few good saves
Oshilaja: 5 - Gave the full back too much space, but hope he's not out for too long?
Lockyer: 7.5 - Immense performance, sometimes desperate
Pearce: 8 (MoM) - Ditto and some fabulous blocks
Purrington: 7 - All about defending today and he did OK
Pratley: 6.5 - Poor in midfield but did well slotting in at the back and some good blocks
    Cullen: 7.5 - 100% effort
Gallagher: 8 - If anyone could give more than 100% effort, he would. Took his goal very well too.
Williams: 7 - Little sparks when he could get the ball and made the goal with a good tackle and pass
Leko: 4.5 - Poor and lethargic
Taylor: 6 - Ran his socks off but so little service
Lapslie: 6.5 - Tried so hard and positionally OK, but skinned too many times near the end
Hemed: 6 - Tried and some good tackles
Referee: 7 - Bit of a homer I think, and we benefited from it

A hard game to score players individually as it just was not that kind of game. Therefore Ive scored players higher who either led to our moment of magic or saved them for Brentford.

Didnt deserve the win but a wonderful ugly heroic 3 points
