Always a fun exercise but one that ends up, quite understandably, with people picking players they've seen personally. Consequently more modern players get over-rated in comparison to the older ones. I'm gonna buck the trend and say this is the best Charlton XI, because this one has got the most significant win under its collective belts:

Shame to exclude Reeves on level played, Jensen on work-rate, Bent being slightly one dimensional and our current squad for not having played enough games. Konch/Powell played for England but Rhoys would go a dozen games without a single cross coming over.

Those who got close...
Gk - No one... had a lot of good keepers, but none in my time have been in the same ball park as Deano Def - Mills, Konchesky, Bielik, Brown Mid - Robinson, Murphy, Reid Att - Kermorgant, Di Canio, Lookman
If I was to play these guys at their peak, in a formation suited to modern football, balanced rather than just beat in their position...

Newton..........Gotta be Simonsen
Jensen Robinson........Flanagan
Mendonca (although Bartlett might make more sense here)......surely D. Bent
Close! For me it’s Simonsen, Flanagan and Darren Bent in for Newton, Robinson and Mendonca, though that’s probably because I have been going since 1976. I had to put Hales on the bench as I am it sure he would last 90 minutes (without being sent off) in modern football AND as I think Bent, in his prime, was truly a world class striker. If I had been older, I am sure that I would have Firmani, Leary and maybe Bartram in the dream team.
Love the team selections you have all put.... most of them are players that have been picked was round the PL era and that just shows what Curbs/Peacock produced and tell me if I'm wrong but I'm getting the same feeling from back there to now with what the work Bowyer/Jacko and Gallen have done in the last 18 months and I know football has changed massively from back there to this present time but I just pray they will be with Charlton Athletic in years to come and take us back to the top flight of English football
Started going to watch Charlton when I was about 15, in 2011, so can't really comment on before then, but thought I'd add my best of the last decade:
GK: Hamer/Elliot RB: Solly CB: Morrison CB: Bauer (Gomez possibly considering what he's gone on to, but probably didn't play enough games for us) LB: Wiggins RM: Gudmonsson CM: Gallagher CM: Poyet (in that POTY winning year) LM: Lookman ST: Kermogant ST: Taylor/BWP
Could say Gallagher hasn't played enough games yet, so maybe Stephens?
Poyet was so over rated and bwp missed more goals than he scored

1) Different eras
2) loyalty/amount of time spent playing for us
3) would certain players work well together? Team bonding likelihood.
4) Natural ability/quality
5) Intel
6) workrate
My era is the late 90s-present.
The peak of it is and was obviously those premier League years.
I can't include the likes of Derek Hales/Sam Bartram...because I never saw them play.

I think I'm asking for a lol or 2 due to the fact that I've rather contradicted the point about loyalty, with at least 3 of those players.
The back 4 make up for it. Steve brown, in my opinion, was very underatted.
I was tempted to include Rommedahl, but I couldn't quite do it.
George Costa was a loanee.
A lot of creativity in that side.
Perhaps a bit too much. They would need to be really well managed and organised...but on their day, they would absolutely destroy a lot of teams.
Forgive me for the Murphy inclusion.....it's partially because he linked up well with bent and at times, he was pretty dam good at his job.
So yep, that is my Charlton team.
I wish it could be a bit different...but it's done now
