If anyone starts to mention building a football network that includes Belgian clubs they should go and sit on the naughty step for a while.6

Maybe Thomas would be interested in buying Sint Truiden ?RichmondSE10Exile said:If anyone starts to mention building a football network that includes Belgian clubs they should go and sit on the naughty step for a while.

Done well a football network can only be a positive, young players get experience abroad at smaller clubs, their best players potentially come over and train/trial with the bigger team, wider scouting network etc.RichmondSE10Exile said:If anyone starts to mention building a football network that includes Belgian clubs they should go and sit on the naughty step for a while.
Roland had his own weird way of doing it though, just send any random player over to the bigger team and hope for the best.
With personnel like Mumford and Roddy on board, if we did go down that route now, i'm very confident it'd be done properly and to our benefit.6 -
Are we past the trial period with Inter yet ?? I'm looking forward to getting some of their players in January 😃9

Remember when Richard Murray announced that 'strategic partnership' with Liverpool after we sold them Shelvey.5

Yes we're getting Zanetti, Ronaldo, Zenga and Matterazzi.golfaddick said:Are we past the trial period with Inter yet ?? I'm looking forward to getting some of their players in January 😃2 -
If we had an owner who could also have control of a club in Belgium and then, you know, move players between the two.Chris_from_Sidcup said:
I think Belgium has a ruling where young players from Africa get fast tracked.Addickted said:African players somehow seem to get automatic Belgian nationality, whether French, Portuguese or English spoken.
More and more foreign clubs are buying Belgian clubs. Leicester's owners own Leuven, Monaco's owner owns Cercle Brugge, Aspire Academy in Qatar own Eupen. Man Utd have a partnership with Antwerp and Man City have one with Lommel.
With our new Brexit rules coming in, i think we may see more clubs take over or do partnership deals with Belgian clubs.0 -
Yes well it took a while but we managed to gift them Joe GomezChunes said:Remember when Richard Murray announced that 'strategic partnership' with Liverpool after we sold them Shelvey.10 -

Don’t forget they loaned us Nathan Eccleston - what a signing he was......... since ending his loan with us 9 years ago he has kicked on and scored 6 goals. He was born in Liverpool(actually it was Manchester) but he was made in Charlton.charltonbob said:

I can't find the original article on the the OS, but I seem to remember Murray saying how he knew fans would think this was just another 'partnership' announced to make us feel better, but that this was actually going to be the real deal and a long term partnership that would bring us the best of Liverpool's youth.ricky_otto said:

And like you say, we got Nathan Ecclestone, and that was it.

Didn't we also have a link with a club in Ghana? Hearts of Oak or something like that, never amounted to much either.0

I remember that, and can remember a couple of the players' names too, there was a Beko Fofana, Serge Deble and Bakary Soro, and a couple of others. We also had some form of partnership with Ajax Cape Town and Valencia too, of which nothing came of themSwisdom said:

Varney linked us up with a Belgian club well before Roland had even heard of us.

Charlton plan to send fringe players to gain experience in Belgium after signing an agreement with Belgian cup holders Germinal Beerschot. The London club already have similar links with New Zealand Knights, MyPa 47 in Finland and China's Shanghai Zobon."This link forms a very important part of our overseas strategy," said Charlton chief executive Peter Varney."The Belgian league is ideal for players not quite ready for the challenge of Premiership."

Germinal Beerschot and Shanghai Zobon no longer exist. Isn’t that also true for a couple of our previous shirt sponsors?1

Looking at their wiki page, Beerschot produced some great players
The youth academy of Beerschot produced the likes of Thomas Vermaelen, Mousa Dembélé, Radja Nainggolan, Jan Vertonghen, and Toby Alderweireld.

Germinal Beerschot. Bah.
When a certain member of this parish arranges a pre season piss up tour to Antwerp to watch the mighty Addicks destroy their new found 'partners' and the Belgian gits move the game forward by 24 hours so you turn up to an empty stadium.2
