Rule 17 allows the Commissioner to do anything including taking draft places away. If broadcasters start asking if games are fair, there could be some action, you never know. It was proper blatant tanking and gets then a 6th round pick rather than the 9th round they would have got with a win.
Cleveland's been getting away with it for 20 years.
Yeah I get the anger at the Eagles, but then you look at the Chargers playing a Chiefs team with Chad Henne winning and they ultimately lose draft position by winning rather than lose to Mahomes because they are resting players, yet there is nothing wrong with what they did so ultimately you need to look out for yourself. Jags have been actively tanking by dropping Minshew for Glennon but if they do it to start the game that's fine? It's an impossible line to draw.
A week 17 game will be forgotten next year if they are back in the playoffs with a great lineman drafted 6th overall and could be worth it to them.
Ultimately the Giants can't complain on missing the playoffs either at 6-10
There is a subtle difference between what we've done vs the Eagles' decision-making. We have at least built some plausible deniability, and you can't really argue that our players were trying their best, and the coaching staff were in good faith with what they have. Also, Minshew is not the guy, and James Robinson being out torpedoed all chances these last two weeks.
As for the Eagles - to bench Hurts down three is so blatantly disrespectful, even though it's not against any rules.
Jags have absolutely tried to lose their games, Minshew started a game then was dropped back down after putting in an ok performance, then it just so happens that DJ Chark and James Robinson are inactive as your best 2 offensive weapons.
I think it was last week on the Around the NFL podcast the person reviewing the Jags Colts game basically said the Jags lied down in the 2nd half after putting up a fight. I'm sure Nate Sudfeld was trying to win the game too, but he was put in knowing he was less likely to pull it off.
