Just been out in the car for the first time this month. It was great to see the central reservation blooming with plants that would normally have been hacked down as weeds. I really hope this situation permanently changes attitudes to the natural world.
One of the silver linings in this pandemic is lockdown means drunkenly buying random nonsense because I’m bored (and drunk), and then completely forgetting I have done so until it arrives. Imagine my joy when these babies arrived this morning...
Here in Maryland the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab population has been teetering on the edge of being an endangered species for decades. We eat a lot of crabs here, a "crab feast", (usually with plenty of beer) is a great excuse for a family gathering or a reward dinner for a workforce that's met it's goals, or for many other reasons. Not being able to over-indulge in these gatherings for only one season should result in a great recovery of the Blue Crab population, and come to think about it the oysters too, needed parts of a finely-balanced eco-system. I'm no tree hugger, or scientist, but it seems that there are likely many species that should experience recovery in numbers due to this situation, Atlantic Cod would be one that comes immediately to my mind, there could be many more. Even clouds this dark have a silver lining.
I can't remember which thread it was that someone was bemoaning not being able to get McDonalds any more, but if you're in Welling, Sittingbourne or Gillingham (plus some other places not usually in our catchment area) you may be able to get them delivered from the middle of next week:
It’s amazing the amount of different birds that two trees and my roof are attracting at the moment. Sit in the garden and it sounds like I’m in some tropical aviary.
