I think this is the more likely reason too. There has to be a reason. The only other alternatives seem to be those below. The last more likely than the first IMO:

That Wednesday won (seeing that Wednesday cheated without doubt, this verdict would be because somebody at the EFL gave them permission to cheat). This would greatly embarrass the EFL so maybe they have ordered silence until they have appealed. I think Wednesday would have leaked this outcome though. Also the permission would have been given after the cheating took place, so if somebody gave the green light wrongly, it wouldn't have changed what Wednesday did.

They are trying to drag it out until next season. If the punishment is not clarified in time it would be difficult to sort out with the new season starting so soon after this. Wednesday may start next season with a 21 point penalty. This will not avoid action from a relegated club but give time for an appeal that won't affect what team is in what league. If you leave it, it may only be one club that feels strongly enough to do anything legal as other clubs will not be affected.

It seems the only way you can realistically compete in the upper half of the table is by having very rich owners who don't mind spunking money in a huge gamble or by cheating. With that in mind, I'm not going to lose too much sleep if we get relegated. If we stay up, I will love what will have beeen a massive achievement and I hope the likes of Luton and Barnsley stay up with us. If we go; at least we haven't cheated.
  • Watch them get a suspended 3 point deduction and a paltry fine
  • It really should be simple, break the rules 12 point reduction. Lie about situations and chest 2 division relegation.

But this is the EFL, no backbone, no honesty themselves. Can they possibly drag this out any longer.............yes of course they can they are hopeless.
  • I'd relegate the fuckers...

The EFL need to change so they should grow a pair... Relegate Wednesday and send a warning to all the owners that if you try to fuck us then we're coming for you.....

Lovely thought.... But never gonna happen and like Muttley said football stinks an is corrupt and it leaves a bitter taste... Just not sure I'm as in love with the game anymore.

Gee... that's fucking sad for a Monday...
  • Football is corrupt from top to bottom, look at  Blatters years at FiFa ,how did quatar get a world cup.How do Derby afford Rooneys £80 k a week.Just look at the way our club has been canniballised ,and we are just one.Pretty sure whatever happens to wednesday, will depend on the old boys network, whereas a small club like Wigan will be thrown to the wolves.
  • Wigan and ourselves show the corruption and lack of genuine regulation there is in the game. Sheffield Wednesday and Derby show the inherent dishonesty clubs are willing to embrace to gain an advantage over others. The EFL could easily do more but is swayed by the vested interests of its members. For instance, the EFL could have a policy where a club owned by people that cannot pass its tests can not compete it its competitions. This would mean they would need the green light before any deal goes through unless they chose to by a club with no league to play in.
  • There is corruption and bribery in all walks of life.how many salesman get the offer, knock a fair bit of the price and there will be a nice drink in it.Transfer to football,"sell us so and so for 2m under the asking price and there will be a nice new Merc in the driveway.Agents bunging a few bob around to get players ,(West Ham allegedly buying Defoes parents a house)Who knows how low our once beautiful, simple game has plummeted, and to be honest who has got the balls(Not EFL) to sort it out. A wonderful opportunity to send a message to cheats is their, will they take it.
  • Money talks, the EFL will take it out on a Wigan, but there is no way that they are going to essentially relegate a Sheffield Wednesday. They just do not have it in them.

  • The EFL are not really taking it out on Wigan. It makes sense to them as well as us to have as many fixed matter of fact penalties as possible. The Administration  one is such a penalty. Everybody knows what it is and it is simply and automatically applied when administration occurs. I think the EFL would prefer similar automatic penalties for other infringements.
  • At this point they must be waiting until the end of the season. If they were still awaiting a decision from the panel surely they’d have put out a statement.

... hence our super-duper transfer embargo.
  • We will hear Wednesday's verdict on Wednesday:-)
  • I think we have to bring Birmingham into this. Both Wednesday and Birmingham fell foul of the FFP rules. Birmingham owned up and Wednesday tried to cover up. Not only by selling the ground to a company they formed after the sale was recorded as happening, but also by creating companies who sponsored them that didn't exist. One of them actually appearing on their tickets

So Birmingham got docked 12 points with a 3 point reduction to the standard penalty because they co-operated. Wednesday did not co-operate and have undertaken dodgy practice and defended that vigorously and aggressively.

So are we seriously thinking that Birmingham will get a harsher punishment for taking a more honest and open approach?
Yep that's about the size of it.  EFL has not even maintained the pretense of protecting the integrity of the game.  The current executive is a big part of the league's problem.

I still think the reason there has been no publicised outcome to the hearing so far is because they are going to relegate Wednesday.

Either straight relegation or 21 point deduction on Wednesday night/Thursday morning.
I'd love that to be true.
That's a harsh punishment but fair, in the context of Wednesday's owner's conduct.
But EFL just won't do it, or anything like it.
I'll be astonished if they as much as an 8 point penalty.
If there's any sanction this season at all it won't materially impact Wednesday at all.
I'd love to be wrong but all the evidence points to EFL aiming to do nothing at all for longer than anyone considers reasonable then do nothing of consequence as an absolute last resort - as with Birmingham last season - 9 points dropped them 3 places - then when they carried on not sticking to the rules, the additional promised sanctions were waived, despite an entirely specious timewasting appeal by the guilty.
In short: do wrong - get slap on wrist - carry on doing wrong and make a fuss - get a pat on the head.
Wednesday's owner has absolutely nothing to worry about.

    From the Owls fan site

The sad thing is Wednesday night should be a fantastic evening of football with loads still to be decided, the "final" league table will be out just before 10pm but due to the clowns at the EFL we'll still have no clear idea who is to be relegated, what an absolute farce they are making of the competition.

Having just read the most recent posts on their fans site, it's interesting to see that they seem as clueless about what is likely to happen and are speculating in the exact same way that we are. Some seem convinced that the delayed decision is linked to a joint announcement being made involving them and Derby. Many others believe that the delayed decision will result in any points deduction being deferred until next season - which means they escape relegation this year.

The more I think about our own precarious state going into Wednesday's final game, the more I think we are going to need Sheff Weds to be dragged down into the bottom 3 for us to escape. I am convinced that Luton will go above us one way or another. I also think Wigan are capable of beating Fulham if Fulham have to go out for a win to give themselves a chance of automatic promotion and also bypassing us out of the bottom 3. Can't see Barnsley beating Brentford though. That leaves us 3rd from bottom (above Hull and Barnsley) and in desperate need of Sheff Weds getting a 12 point deduction - noting they have one of the easiest games of the season against Middlesbrough to come.

Let's get a point at Leeds and escape the drop without the need for Sheff Weds to be involved in our survival plot.

  • Sheffield Wednesday play Middlesbrough on Wednesday so it makes sense to delay any announcement until after that game as plenty of others have said.

Middlesbrough have a slim chance of being caught by us and Luton. If Wednesday management and players knew they were guaranteed relegation already the game could legimately called a fix and the EFL would be to blame so they will no risk that, correctly in my opinion.
But how can you work a game plan? What if we needed 3 points at the time threw kitchen sink to win then lose cause of it, then turned out after sheff Weds deduction that one point would of been enough and Barnsley stay up?

    Complicated

I’ve always thought that might be the reason for the secrecy. Hope so anyway.
Although it wouldn’t technically be a ‘fix’, but the problem might be that Sheffield Wednesday could just put out a scratch side, or perhaps not play with any commitment, as they would have absolutely nothing to play for.
  • My money is on them docking both Derby and Sheffield Wednesday points.  If its 12 each Wednesday would be relegated and it would take a mathematical miracle for Derby to go down.

That would be the out come least likely to piss everyone off.  It makes no difference to Derby and giving them the same punishment would help the efl if Wednesday appealed.
  • So what if we are in the bottom 3 without Wednesday deduction and we need to win we throw the kitchen sink at it and lose. Then after the efl decide to charge Weds which would then mean a point would of done us? Gameplans etc will be key for all the teams down there. Ck

Middlesborough can not get relegated as 3 teams can not get more than 49 points.

We play as though the Chef Wendy omnishambles wasn't happening and go for all three points to remove all doubt.

If scores in the other matches are going our way we may be able to refine our game plan (but please, please, please, PLEASE don't sit back trying to defend a point!) but we must go into the game with the attitude that it's in our hands and we do what we need to do to guarantee our own survival.

Once the final whistle has blown we can then worry about which division of the Sheffield and District Sunday League the cheating c***s have been demoted to.

    Simples.
